20~ Isaac
When I found the exit to parking lot a feeling of joy washed over me. I was going to see my little brother. I havent seen him in a week and were closer than atoms in a molecule.
I took a deep breath and plastered on a smile. Pushing open the door I stepped into the cool October air. I spotted our silver mini-van a few aisles away. I jogged over and spotted my family watching the parking lot for me. My brother turned around and we caught each others eyes. A genuine smile stretched across my face.
"Brady," I whispered. I waited for him to come running over and jump into my arms. He didnt. My smile was replaced with confusion. I sped, quite literally, over to them and stopped in front of my frowning, five year old brother. "Brady?" I asked confused. He turned away from me and walked over to my mom who just realized what was happening. "Mom?"
"Isaac, my boy," she whispered tears welling up in her eyes. I walked over and hugged her. "I want to hear every single detail. Whats wrong?"
"Brady. He wont talk to me."
"We'll um... discuss this at home. Okay?"
"O-okay."
"Lets just go home," my dad said putting a hand on my shoulder.
"Dad," I whispered giving him a hug.
If you havent noticed already, I'm pretty close with my family.
I released and took another look at Brady. It was really unusual for him to act with such hatred. He doesnt really understand emotions very well. I mean, he couldnt even tell when people bullied him because of his deformities. Thats one of the reasons we were so close. I was his friend during those times. He actually grew really close to Alex and Meg too. We would hang out with him after school, or leave him little notes on his Ipad to look at during school. Why was he so mad at me?
The slamming of car doors pulled me out of my trance. I hopped into the car and watched as Brady buckled himself on his own. When did that happen?
I leaned my head back on the seat and dozed off as we drove the half-hour home.
*time-skip to an hour later*
"Isaac, do you want to order a pizza?" My mom called from the stairs. I peeked my head out of my bedroom door before answering.
"Yeah be right there!" I shouted.
I scurried to finishing packing the duffel bag. I planned to have this in case the government came as Meg so subtly warned me.
Note the sarcasm.
I mean, I totally understood where she was coming from. It is illegal to give yourself more powers than what you are born with. We didn't really break this technically speaking; we were born with these powers, but they just weren't out yet.
Anyway, I wonder how everyones doing
I snatched my phone off my dresser and texted Meg while I walked down stairs.
Me: Hey, how you doing?
She didnt reply right away which was odd. Maybe she was grounded or something, her parents are rather strict. I wouldnt be surprised if she could only go to school.
I shoved my phone in sweatshirt pocket and stepped into the living room where Brady was sitting on the carpet playing with Paw Patrol toys.
"Hey, bud. Want some pizza?" I asked carefully sitting cross legged on the couch. Well, half cross legged, Im not flexible at all.
"Sure. No mushrooms though." he said looking up at me with a disgusted look.
I chuckled, "I got it, any requests."
"Modern Hawaiian?" he pleaded.
"Sure thing little bro," I laughed again, whilst pulling out my phone to call the place. Modern Hawaiian was our little thing. He hated ham on pizza so we replaced it with bacon. Its a great combo.
"I missed you," he said dropping his toys and curling into a fetal position. I clicked end call on my screen and slid off the couch to sit next to him.
"I missed you too," I whispered gathering him up in my arms.
"Why did you leave?" he asked looking up at me with his bright blue eyes. He pouted. Well, tried to. Hes missing a chunk of his lip on the right; his little teeth show through. "Did I do somnething wrong?" he asked tears welling up in his eyes.
"No, no. Youre perfect, just the way you are. Your big brother is the one who messed up." I said rubbing his back the way my mom always does.
"What did you do?" he asked perking up.
"You want to hear a story?" I asked. His eyes lit up. "Okay, but you have to sit still and listen. This story is just between us for now, okay?"
He nodded eagerly adjusting to face me. I scooped him up and plopped him on the couch before sitting down myself.
"I'm going to order the pizza first. Okay?"
"YeP!" he answered half popping the P. I grinned as I dialed the number.
"Hi, Darren, it's Isaac. Can I get a large modern Hawaiian pizza delivered?" I asked our pizza guy.
"Sure thing, say hi to Brady for me!" He answered, clicking sounds in the background. We call this place quite often so they know our pizzas.
"Will do! Deliver in less than 20 and youll get a big tip."
"I'll get on it then!"
"Bye."
"Bye."
I clicked my phone off and looked at Brady. He watched me with expectant eyes. I took a deep breath and watched as he leaned in closer. I let his anticipation rise before I let the breath out and sat there. His expression deflated into another adorably quirky pout.
"Nah, Im just kidding. I'll tell you the story."
An annoyed look washed over him but was quickly replaced with excitement.
I began my story and it went something like this:
"So, about a week ago, Meg was to go on a date with a new boy at our school, Tristan. While she was on the date, Alex looked through some old books. She found what she thought was a game and played it with Meg when she returned.
In this game, which I will not be explaining, you open something called a vault. This is where hidden powers are. It also holds all your memories. Alex and Meg opened this and gained new powers. Alex could now control the weather and its energy, shape-shift, and turn into a shadow. Meg is able to turn into a mermaid with water powers and she can use force fields. We don't know why Meg only has two, it's rather interesting.
Anyway, they didn't know what to do so they called me. I left a note saying Alex needed help and I would be home soon. I don't think any of you saw this."
He shook his head.
"Okay, well I did. So I went over there and Alex went into this shock like thing. She couldn't control her powers, so I took her to some people that could help. Their names are Kaya and Spring." After saying their names, I began to wonder where they were.
"What were their powers? Did they have wings like us? What do they look like?" Brady asked jumping, or well trying to while sitting, on the couch.
"Okay, okay. Im getting there, buddy. Chill."
"I'm chill. I'm chill."
"That's my bro," I chuckled as we fist-bumped.
"Story!"
"Right. Where was I? Oh yeah! So, Kaya and Spring are both advances with shape-shifting powers. Spring is tall with dirty red hair, called auburn, and deep gray eyes. She has freckles on her nose and cheeks. Kaya is short with wavy sand blond chair and lime green eyes. She has a really fair complexion that contrasts her bright eyes. Her wings, just as Springs do, match her hair. They have tiny little specks of different colors mixed in as well, so they really do look like sand. Now what we didnt know was Kayas backstory, but Ill get to that later."
"Isaac? Honey, can I talk to you for a minute?" my mom called from the kitchen. An emotion lined her voice that I just couldn't place.
"Be right there!" I called. "I'll be back in a minute," I said to Brady sliding him off my lap.
"Otay!"
I walked cautiously to the kitchen, knowing what this was about. My mom stood against the counter a sad look dampening her usually bright attitude.
"Yes, mom?" I asked leaning against the island across from her.
"Isaac," she said still gazing at the floor, "I-I need answers."
A took a deep breath; I knew this was coming. "Okay, ask away."
"Where- No, tell me the story. Then I'll ask."
"I was just about to tell it to Brady. Can we sit in the living room?" I asked not wanting to tell it twice today.
"Yes," she replied with a sigh. I gave her a gentle hug before walking to Brady to tell him.
"Hey, bud! Mommy is joining us. Is that okay?" I asked sinking into the couch as I did just a few minutes ago.
"I thought it was just between us?"
"It was, but Mommy wants to hear it too. We dont want to leave her out, do we?" I asked him hoping he would agree.
"You'd better not leave out the person who brought you into this world!" she scolded sitting on the chair across from us.
"Of course, not, Mommy!" Brady said sweetly as he curled into my chest. My mom and I exchanged aw-he-is-so-precious looks. "Story time!"
"Okay, but I have to retell the beginning to Mommy."
"Otay, I like the beginning."
"You only know the beginning!" I chuckled.
"Oh, yeah," he said thoughtfully.
I retold the beginning to my mom, summing things up a bit more than I did with Brady. Then I continued my story
"So they agreed to help Alex and begun to figure out what the problem was when Tristan came. We explained to him everything that had happened and he warned us that police had searched Megs house after hearing complaints about bright lights, loud noises, and other disturbances. Knowing that possessing the extra powers was illegal, Alex and Meg decided they needed to disappear for a while. I decided to tag along and rushed home to add to my previous note. We all snuck back into our houses to pack clothes and some food. Tristan owns an old cabin up North so we flew their and set up camp. The girls went on a supply run, but Tristan and I stayed behind. He convinced me to do the same thing Meg and Alex did. So, we opened our vaults. I now possess three powers I never knew I had. I-"
"Show me!" Brady cut me off.
"Mum?" I asked, "Is that okay?"
"Are they safe?"
"Yeah."
"Alright."
"Yes!" Brady exclaimed racing around the room. He stopped abruptly and looked at me, "Where are we going to go?"
"Outside," My mom raised her eyebrows at me.
I pushed myself up from the couch and headed into the backyard. I waited for Brady and my mom to catch up before kneeling on one knee.
"Isaac?" my mom asked worry lining her voice.
I kept my head down and envisioned a large willow tree that Ive always wanted to own. The ground hummed beneath me as a tiny sprout poked out of the ground. When the sapling began to thicken I stood up and stepping back I began to guide the shape of the tree. I shaped it so that the branches spiraled around the trunk forming a staircase-like structure. At the top I had branches cross one another to form a flatter surface. The tree continued to grow until everything snapped together like a puzzle.
I walked over to an awestruck Brady and picked him up. I set him down on the staircase and guided him up. We made to the top and I called my mom up.
"Isaac I wow," she whispered looking around. This is amazing.
"Thanks," I replied cheekily.
"It's a twee house!" my little brother cried running about the small area.
"I always wanted one for you two," my mom said smiling up at me. I blushed, scratching the back of my head.
"Yeah, I remember."
Brady came to a screeching halt in front of me and grinned, "What else can you do?"
"Well, I can-" I began before the feeling of knowledge rushed over me. The darkening light inside the tree became a bright green as images began swirling my vision. I saw Tristan. He was at some type of bar, kissing someone. I focused and turned my point of view. Now I could see the girl, and it wasnt Meg
