Prolouge: No Rests

No one's POV

It was a nice sunny day in Japan. A train travels through a valley for some time now. In one of the less busy passage cars, a man stares out through the window on his left. He was silent as his chin rests in one palm as he stares out into space. The man looks young, probably around nineteen. He had black messy hair and orange eyes. The sun hits his somewhat pale skin. He wore a black jacket over a dark blue shirt. He wore a brown leather belt around his navy blue pants. Lastly he wore a pair of socks under his black and white sneakers.

He saw a flock of birds flying in the air. He watches them fly by with a blank face. He was one of the very few in his car, but that was due to being in the second to last car on the train. It was him and a small handful of other people besides him who were there. The rest were placed in the cars ahead of him, all full. The man doesn't mind being alone though. In fact, he embraces it. After all, he knows it's for the best of he had little to no interactions with others to keep them safe.

The birds near the train flew away. He frowns a little but forces his feelings out. He made himself think about other things as he waits for the train to reach its destination. It didn't take long before his mind wonders off into the past.

The man had a flashback to a couple of years ago. It was a cold and rainy night in a small town. Practically no one was out as they kept warm in their homes. But there were always a few who were unlucky.

A car drives over a small bridge, creating a small splash from a puddle. The splash was sent over the edge of the bridge and to the wet ground below. Under the bridge, a young boy who looks to be in his mid teens was sleeping on top of a flatten cardboard box over the wet mud. Half of his messy black hair was wet due to sleeping on his side. He wore an old and dirty jacket over a long white shirt that was muddy as well. His jeans were torn, soaked, and covered in mud along with his worn out shoes. The boy tosses in his sleep as his face contorts.

???'s POV

I was about ten at the time. I was sitting against a wall in a small white room, alone. There was nothing in here at all except for a single light that shines in my face hanging by a wire on the roof. Other than that, nothing. No chairs, windows, tables, nothing. I was wearing a straight jacket that had unique metal restraints locked around my ankles, wrists and hands, giving me no way of moving my body. I had a mask around my face that allowed me to breathe, but that was it. I couldn't eat, drink, spit, or anything. I simply stare at my restrained body in utter silence as time passes.

'They're coming...' I told myself.

And just as I finished, the sound of locks unlocking echos in my room. A couple of seconds pass by as the locks continue to be unlocked before the sound of metal scraping against the ground pierces through my room. After, all the silence I had was thrown out. I heard countless screams and yells of pain and agony, a couple of people crying hysterically as loud as they possibly could, and bodies and possible heads smashing against the metal doors to attempt a breakout beyond the door. I don't flinch at all as I heard multiple pairs of footsteps and a couple of radio chatter approaching me. I don't bother looking up because I know it's always them.

"Don't move." A muffled voice demands.

"..." I say nothing as I stayed completely still. The sound of a person kneeling in front of me and a couple of beeps was all that was heard next. After, I hear air being released from my restraints as I could barley start to feel my body move freely.

"Get up." Another muffled voice demands over their radio chatter.

"..." I remain silent and don't look up as I slowly and awkwardly got up on my feet. But I didn't have the chance to fully get up when a hand grabs me by my arm and forcefully pulls me up on my feet, making me stumble when I stood. I kept my head down and stare at my worn out tennis shoes.

"Let's go." A third muffled voice, this time it was across the room, says. But I know he wasn't talking to me.

I didn't have time to recover as I was being practically dragged out of my room by the person who still had their hand on my arm. When I was dragged out of my room, the screams, yelling, and laughter was all that I could hear. I might of heard from the people who took me to testing yell at the others to shut up a couple of times here and there, but that wasn't often. Their voices were flattened by the others' who were still somehow alive from testing.

Most people new to this would loose their sanity to all of this early on, but I didn't. Whether that was a good think or not is unclear to me. This was all I knew. Every day and every night was the same procedure; stay in my room, eat, potentially sleep, get tested on for several hours, then back to my room until the next day. This has been my life for-.

"ACK!!!" I yelp as I felt a sudden intense amount of electricity stabbed into my back then my entire body.

"Hurry up, freak!" One of the soldiers from behind demands. "The doc is waiting!"

"..." I try my best to remain calm and silent, but I'm starting to break. I increase my pace a little as I heard the soldiers around me begin chatting with one another. What were they talking about? I can't tell.

After several minutes of walking, I knew where I was sent to: The lab. The sound of a giant metal door opening was all I heard before being shoved into the room. I walk to the center of the room as usual while still keeping my eyes on my shoes. I notice I sometimes pass by a couple of dried up or wet puddles of blood every so often as the room was huge, but I ignore them. I eventually stop in the center of the room. I turn my body a little to my life to face the doctor, but still refuse to look up. The sound of the speakers turning on was all I could hear for a few seconds before his voice spoke through a microphone. He clears his throat while a couple of papers were crumbling before he spoke.

"Welcome back." He says, but not to me. "Today, we'll-." I zone out of the rest of the speech.

At some point during his speech, the ground suddenly shakes. I wasn't fazed by it but I heard the doctor yell in surprise before being cut off mid yell. All the lights and power shut off for a brief moment before the red emergency lights activate. The alarms blare throughout the facility as the female emergency voice spoke throughout any and all speakers.

"Warning: Subjects have broken out of containment. Repeat: Subjects have broken out of containment. Please have all research personnel evacuated immediately." It repeats over and over again.

I remain still, afraid of trying to escape. I know what happens to any and all who tries to escape. I hope that they-.

A hand suddenly grabs my shoulder. I felt an immense pain that I've never felt before through my left side of my waist.

"GAHH!!!" I yell before being suddenly knocked out.

No one's POV

The boy's dream was suddenly cut off. In reality, a hand touches the sleeping teen's shoulder. His eyes open instantly with a small gasp. He pushes the hand off him with his left arm as red glowing vein-like tendrils wrap themselves around his right arm. He sits up and points his right arm at the person who touches him before hearing a familiar voice.

"I-its just me, kiddo!" A startled old voice yell in panic.

"?!" The teen's orange eyes widen in horror upon recognizing the man's voice. He stares at the old man with fear before slowly lowering his arm, which trembles but not from the cold. The tendrils around his arms disappears as the teen looks down in shame.

"I'm s-sorry, Jimmy..." The teen apologizes as he hides his eyes behind his hair, too ashamed to look at the older gentleman directly.

"Ohhh...it's alright, y/n." The man says softly. A silhouette of a slouching man stood in front of the teen. It was hard to identify the old man as the two were taking shelter underneath the bridge with no light. But what could be seen was the man holding something out to y/n. "Here, take it."

"?!" Y/n looks up at the man with a confused look. "You're...not afraid of me?"

Jimmy lets out a short chuckle. "Of course not, kiddo. Why would I ever be?"

"..." Y/n was hesitant about answering. He doesn't know whether to be happy or not about Jimmy's answer. "Because...I'm a-."

"Do you need anything, sir?" A kind soft voice asks out of nowhere.

"...H-huh?" The man turns his head away from the window to his right.

A woman who looks to be a little older than the man was standing next to his seat. The man lifts his eyes up and down to study the woman. She had a rather curvy body that most men would find perfect. She wore some clothing that resembles the train station's staff members. She had a cute little smile on her face as she stares at the man for an answer.

"I asked if you needed anything, sir." The woman repeats kindly.

"I..." The man couldn't find an answer. It wasn't because he was seduced by the woman's figure or anything, it was the fact that he didn't expect to speak to anyone during this ride. "...I-I'm good, thank you." He finally replies quietly.

"Are you sure?" The woman asks, her smile grows a little.

The man was about to respond, but he saw the woman act strange. She wraps her arms below her two mounds and lifts her arms a little, making her chest bounce a bit. Her cheeks turn a shade of pink as she spoke yet again.

"Are you...really sure you don't want anything?~"

"..." A drop of sweat drips off the man's face. He knows what she's trying to play at and doesn't want to get upset. "I'm sure." He says as confident as he could.

"..." The woman stares at him in shock for a brief moment, not believing what he's saying. But she discards that as she drops her act. "Hmp. Very well." Was all she said before speed walking off.

"..." The man stares at the woman as she left. When he saw she went into the next cart, he lets out a long sigh. "You can't endanger anyone, y/n." He whispers to himself while rubbing his face with his palms.

"Next up, Kuoh Town." A female's voice says over the speakers.

Y/n looks up. He turns his head to the window and saw a small view of a city in the distance coming closer and closer.

"Kuoh Town..." Y/n mutters. "Was this the right choice to make?" Before he could debate about his choices for long, y/n shook his head. He rests on his chair as he waits for the train to reach its stop.
