Chapter I: A Purpose

No one's POV

It was a peaceful morning at sea. It wasn't too hot as the wind blew a gentle breeze. A large ship casually sails across the calm sea. In it was a group of sailors and palicos were busy making sure that everything on the ship was set and secured.

The captain of the ship walks on the deck, marking sure every one was doing as they were supposed to do. But his attention was brought to a young woman wearing a full set of Nargacuga armor, resting her arms on the railing of the ship, staring out into the distance. Beside her was her palico who was sitting on the railing.

"Hmm?" The captain became curious by the Hunter.

He walks up to the distracted woman as her palico noticed him. It got up on its feet and meows whilst waving happily at him.

"Heh." The captain lets out a short chuckle and pats the palico's head, who purrs. After, he turns his attention to the Hunter again, who still hasn't noticed him. "Oi. What's got you so silent?" He asks.

"!!" The young Hunter's eyes widen. She blinks a few times, startled, before turning her head to the captain. "W-What?" She asks, surprised.

"Ha ha!" The captain laughs, finding her reaction hilarious. "S-sorry, Miss. didn't mean to scare ya."

As the captain finishes, the woman's cheeks turn a shade of pink. Her eyes averts his as she spoke up. "What do you want...?"

"Nothin' much." The captain responds with a soft smile. "Noticed ya were out here all alone. Just thought you might've wanted company was all."

"Oh..." Was all the Hunter said. She looks down to think of something to say, before looking up at him as her face relaxes a little. "Thank you, but I'm fine. I just need some time to myself."

The captain lifts an eyebrow as he folds his arms. "Oh? How come? Somethin' happened at home?"

"...." The woman frowns upon hearing his question. She stares back to the water as an old memory flashes in her head.

It was supposed to be an ordinary night in a village within a valley. But something awful happened at some point as everyone slept.

Right now the woman, with a Nargacuga bow in hand, and her palico were running pass several frightened and confused villagers of her village. The huts surrounding them were either engulfed in flames or destroyed by ice. Several Hunters were scattered on the ground, all dead by some thing.

"Get to the emergency cave, everyone!" She orders over her shoulder. "It will be safer there! Make sure to-!"

She was cut off when she heard a loud roar behind a few huts ahead of her. She stops running as something massive crashes through the huts. "?!" She and her palico dodge to the side and barley dodged the thing in time.

When she got back on her feet, she saw a massive unknown wyvern getting back on its feet. It has primarily black colored bodies with bits of white and light blue throughout and white underbellies. It most notably had long whip-like-fingers ending in small hooks, with distinct red streaks on the whip "fingers", with two similar hookless tendrils hanging from its waist. They have tails with three fins, wing membranes which resemble flowing water due to the color scheme and patterns, many curved spines lining their backs and tails, large bat like ears, white eyes with no pupils, and long, bladed, segemented, whip-like "fingers" on the wings which end in slightly curved blades.

The wyvern shook its head, sending tiny pieces of debris off itself. It growls when it noticed the woman on its right.

"W-what the-?!" She shouts, afraid of the creature in front of her. She's never seen a creature like this one before! Her body trembles as she stood frozen, horrified by the unknown wyvern.

Before it could attack her, a monstrous roar coming from behind the destroyed huts took the two's attention. A large silhouette leaps out of the flames and tackles the wyvern to the ground. The wyvern tries to escape from the new monster, but the latter was already on top of it and slams its paw in the wyvern's face.

The new monster had a body shape similar to a well known monster known as Zinogre, but it had different unique features. The right side of its body has an icy blue color while its left has a fiery red color. The rest of its body is covered with grayish scales and plating. Long, bristly fur extends from its limbs, back, and tail. On its head, the monster had unique ram-like horns that were separate elemental colors like the rest of its body. Lastly, the right side of its face is blue while the other is red with yellow slitted eyes.

The wyvern smacks the new monster with its tail, but the monster wasn't fazed by it. The newest monster dug its fangs into the wyvern and lifts it into the air, shaking it like a toy. The wyvern roars in pain, making the Hunter put her hands on her ears, but the monster ignores it as it still wouldn't let go.

"What is that?!" The confused Hunter shouts.

She watches in both confusion and awe as the monster threw the wyvern away like nothing. It howls before charging at the monster to finish it off. Before she could go after the two, a loud boom explodes in the sky. She looks up to find the source, but she couldn't see anything out of the ordinary.

Suddenly, something massive crashes behind her, causing the Hunter and her palico to be sent flying in the air. Dust was blown into the sky, making it hard to see what just landed. Two massive wings spread out of the dust as a new monster roars. The dust clears and a-.

"Oi, you still there?" The captain's voice interrupts the woman's thoughts.

"H-huh?" She turns her head back to the captain as the latter looks a little worried about her.

"What's with ya?" He asks. "Palico got your tongue or somethin'?"

"...Sorry..." She mutters. "It's been a long couple of days..."

The captain huffs before stepping to the railing and leans on it. He spoke as he stares out into the sea. "Trust me, I know how ya feel. I've been put to work a lot more than usual this past week due to all those new monsters showing up everywhere."

"S-seriously?!" The woman asks, caught off guard by his words. "You've seen new ones too?!"

The captain turns his head to her and nods. "Aye. But it's not just me whose been seeing them. Apparently new monsters have been showin' up almost everywhere you look. People are becoming scared and are fleeing from their villages to find somewhere else thats safe. Crazy fools if you ask me."

"..." The woman looks down at her palico, who looks at her with sadden eyes. The Hunter looks back at the captain as she clenches her fists. "Which is why I'm going to the New World."

"Eh?" The captain looks at her with a puzzled look. "Whatta mean?"

"My village was attacked by three monsters a few days ago. We were no matched for them. So I'm in search of gathering others to help take care of them with the remaining survivors."

"..." The captain was quiet for a moment, thinking about the Hunter's words. But he suddenly smirks for some reason. "So you've heard about the "Sapphire Star" too, huh?"

"What?" The Hunter asks, confused. "Sapphire Star?"

"You've seriously never heard of him?" The captain asks skeptically before laughing again.

Meanwhile...

In a desert of the New World, a man jumps back from black mist coated in red lightning. He was wearing a full set of Bazelgeuse armor.

He wields a Bazelgeuse-themed longsword in his hands as he waits for the next attack.

"He's the New World's number one Hunter!" The captain says exactingly.

The man growls lowly from under his helmet. He tightens his grip on his longsword as he stares down at the growling monster in front of him.

It was a very large, bipedal Brute Wyvern characterized by its uniform forest green coloration and muscular upper body. Its thick hide was littered with short, jagged spines that reach a maximum height along the back and tail. The monster has a narrow snout with a large lower jaw, covered in multiple rows of teeth spreading outwards from the mouth. It has massive, powerful hind legs, but tiny, poorly developed forelegs that it rarely utilizes. Its back and shoulder muscles were swollen considerably, revealing scars. Areas of its skin has taken on a bright red coloration. It has a dark red haze of Dragon Element surrounding its face, as its eyes had a blood-red hue and its skin changes to a light brownish color. The monster's scales appear slightly darker than its regular counterparts', but it's tailfangs was also blood-red in color.

"No one comes close to his skills when it comes to hunting monsters!"

The monster, also known as a Savage Deviljho, drools uncontrollably from its mouth while panting. It forces itself to charge at the male Hunter as the latter does the same. When close enough the Deviljho lifts its head up as high as it could and slams itself into the ground, causing sand to explode everywhere. The Hunter suddenly slides behind the Brute's legs as he reels his longsword behind him. He gave one massive swing to the legs and with enough force, he brought the monster crashing on its side into the sand as he sheaths his sword.

"I've heard rumors about him saying he's as strong as a brute wyvern!"

The Deviljho struggles to get back on its feet. It flails its body as much as it could as the Hunter unsheathes his blade and points the tip of his sword at the beast's face. He charges forward and jumps on the Deviljho's body, using it as a boost to jump higher into the sky. He covers the monster's view from the sun and lifts his sword above his head for his finishing move. He goes for a spinning slash as he falls closer to the monster's neck. Before he kills the Deviljho, a white flash blinds everything.

"Everyone tries to catch up to him, but he's always bestin' himself before the others can catch up to him! Hahaha!" The captain finishes with a laugh. "He's somethin' else I tell ya!"

"..." The woman was silent, taking in everything the captain has told her. "...I see..." She mutters.

"Are ya plannin' to hire him?" The captain jokes.

"...I...I-I'm not-."

A loud boom echos in the sky, causing everyone on the ship to look into the sky. Something flew from the air to the sea level in a matter of seconds. It flew pass the ship at an incredible speed, causing the ship to tilt on its side for a moment or two as massive waves splashes the deck. Everyone struggles to stay on their feet as barrels and crates drag from one side of the ship to the other.

"Whoa!" The female Hunter shouts as she grabs the railing and her palico grabs hold of her leg.

A roar from the fast object could barley be heard over all of the commotion on the ship. The Hunter saw the object dive into the water for a brief moment before flying out and into the sky again. From what she could briefly see, she saw it was an all too familiar monster. Her eyes widen as she gasps from recognizing the monster.

It was a slender monster covered in gleaming silver scales. Its most notable feature is its wings, which have fused into a trident-like structure, each segment ending in an opening designed to expel dragon energy. Its back is lined with fin-like projections. Its head has a small crest and its eyes are blue. Its chest has three horizontal gaps that are used to take in and pressurize air like a jet engine.

The dragon flew high in the sky before suddenly disappearing at an unimaginable speed, breaking the sound-barrier. A massive boom was heard from countless miles before everything began to return to normal.

"T-that monster!" The woman yells as everything slowly calms down. The old memory continues in the Hunter's mind from where she left off.

The Hunter slams into a pile of debris, causing her to yelp in pain. Her palico lands on the ground and tries to save its master from the rubble, but doesn't have the strength to get her out. Something hits the back of the Hunter's head with enough force to make her loose unconscious. As her eyes close, the sound of her palico meowing was muffled and blocked out as she heard a roar from within the dust. She barley saw the dust being blown away as the monster from within it could be briefly seen.

"A...Th-third one...?" The Hunter mutters. The third monster looks around its surroundings before the Hunter's vision becomes black.

The Hunter broke out of her thoughts as she looks to where the dragon was last at. The captain shouts to his crew to make sure everyone was alright. The Hunter ignores him as she whispers something under her breath and clench her fists, her anger taking over her.

"I will find you, monsters...no matter the cost."
