18. Lamia and Echo

Lamia

As soon as I left (Y/N)'s dream, I returned to the inorganic place where I was imprisoned. The dark castle loomed before me, and as I hurried up the steps, I tried not to think of the crows cawing at me. I raced up to me room and locked it behind me, double checking that everything was locked before the clock struck midnight. Sitting down in a chair, I smiled and laugh manically.

"This is much easier than I thought... I'll be able to rid myself of this wretched Leora and possibly make (Y/N) do more of my bidding.... Maybe I can reclaim my former life!"

"That's only if everything goes according to your plan," a voice replied.

I look up and scowl. "Don't spoil my fun, Echo."

Echo was sitting on the windowsill with her feet inside the room. Her ridiculous cape was gone, making her seem smaller than ever, as the cape made her appear larger-than-life. "I'm not spoiling your fun. I'm merely issuing a warning."

"I'm not letting a goody-two-shoes like you order me around," I scoffed. "I can do whatever I want."

"I'm not a goody-two-shoes," Echo replied as she stood up and closed the window. "I'm merely repenting for my sins."

"Repenting, huh? You sound like you belong in a convent."

"I've already done that, and it was boring."

"Wow.... I would never imagine you doing that. You would look ridiculous as a nun."

"Shut up," Echo muttered as she crossed her arms.

I smirked at Echo. "You seem tense."

"Of course I am. Reina is getting on my case about keeping an eye on you and (Y/N)."

"Reina, Reina, Reina," I muttered as I pour myself a glass of blood red pomegranate juice. "That's all. You ever talk about."

"Of course I do. She's my handler."

"Handler? You said she was your boss...." I noted. "Unless.... Did you form a contract with her?"

"N-No...."

"You did. Poor thing," I muttered. "No wonder you call her 'Queen.' You have no choice but to honor her that way."

"Her name is Reina," Echo insisted.

"I doubt such a person exists. It's more likely a cover for the demon who owns your soul. Speaking of which, that was stupid of you."

"So what if I made that decision, Lamia? It's not like I have anyone who cares about me," she hissed.

"Neither do I. My parents are dead, and Leora is ruining everything."

"Is this a contest?" Echo asks.

"Maybe."

"Whatever," she replied. "My question is why you hate Leora with a fiery passion."

"She's my sister who locked me here!" I screamed. "She took away my throne and exiled me here!"

Echo blinked. "Oh.... I'm so sorry."

"I'm used to it," I replied. "Now, tell me about your 'boss' Reina."

"I won't."

"Shame. That's probably a codename then."

Echo once again remained silent. I sighed and took another sip of my drink. "Would you like some?"

Echo shrugged and served herself a drink. "Is this blood?"

"Of course not."

"Shame. Wait, that sounded weird."

"Why?"

"I've had blood before."

"You sound like a vampire."

"I'm not," she replied. "And you're not either, despite what your name suggests."

"Lamia isn't my real name."

"And Echo isn't mine. What a pair we make."

I smiled at this. "You are quite the interesting soldier, Echo."

"Ditto, but I'm not talking about the Pokemon."

"What's a Pokemon?" I asked.

She raised her head back and groaned. "Dammit. Why did I have to go into the cultural wasteland? This isn't funny Alicia!"

"Who's Alicia?"

"No one," she replied.

"Alicia.... Huh. Is she Reina?"

"F*** you."

I smiled at this. "You are quite the stubborn one."

"That is literally what everyone tells me."

"Except for (Y/N). She has no idea what to think."

"Good for her."

"Yes.... She's too occupied with Leora."

"She sounds like me," Echo muttered. "Except a bit less blood-thirsty."

"She wants to kill Leora," I remind her. "Which fits with my goals."

"When I get mad at people I tend think like Yandere-chan."

"Yandere.... chan?"

"ARRRRGGHHH!" Echo yelled. "This is impossible!"

I laughed at her. "Oh Echo, you're funny."

"I'm not," she replied. "And neither is your plan to kill Leora with the sigma potion."

I dropped my glass and it shattered to the floor. "How did-"

"My job is to monitor this world, and your interaction with (Y/N) caught my eye. You're using the sigma potion to come back, aren't you?"

"So what if I am? You can't do anything about it," I replied.

"That's not guaranteed. I'll have to go against Alicia's wishes, but I will prevent chaos from happening."

"So you'll let Leora live?!"

"I didn't say that."

I scowled at her. "Echo, if you let Leora live people will die."

"I'm not letting her live."

"Good. At least we can agree on something."

Echo poured herself another drink. "I'm surprised Laslow isn't dancing at the event. He is such a good dancer in the games and in real life.... Maybe (Y/N) will have him dance with her."

"You're making zero sense," I deadpanned.

"I don't have to make sense. Besides, after Leora dies, you will never see me again."

"Huh. You going somewhere?"

"You could say that," she replied. After finishing her second drink, she put the glass down and returned to the window.

"What's your real name?" I ask.

"Tell me yours."

"Never."

"Then you'll never know," she replied. Opening the window, she jumped out and flew away, leaving me alone in my room.

Reina: So that's Echo and Lamia's first interaction in the story. They're wary of each other and have their own goals - Lamia wants revenge and Echo's goal is somewhat unclear, other than keeping an eye on Lamia.

Also, Lamia means female vampire, which is what Echo was talking about when she says how Lamia's name doesn't suit her.

I initially wanted Lamia to be a good guy, but now she kind of does her own thing.

Just out of curiosity, which characters do you like in this book (how they're portrayed, your favorite character from the game, etc)?
