Chapter 4 - Friends
Dan's POV
When I got no word on Cynthia's condition, I decided I would catch a ride to the hospital to see her. She must've been fine. I don't know why I was so worried.
Grabbing a seat in one of her other friend's car, I quietly stared out the window while on our trip out of town. I found myself remembering that dream - it was a dream, right? - of those blue eyes. They glowed so ghostly in the dark. They were terrifying, but some how, quite beautiful. I wanted to see them again.
"Dan? Dan?!" one of the others in the car grabbed my attention. "Are you alright back there?"
"Yeah, fine."
"Well, we're almost there. Stay awake, ok mate?"
"Sure."
There were two girls and a guy - Chris, Abby and Megan - in the car. I sat in the back, not very familiar with them. They just knew me through Cynthia. I was more of a loner and didn't fit in so well with them, but CC saw through that, and was my best friend. These other guys were minor friends to her, but still something. She was quite caring of others.
"Oh! Here we are!" Abby jumped, seeing the hospital sign. Chris - the driver, apparently - swerved into the lot and parked. We entered as a group, and asked about our friend.
The nurse directed us to a room where she believed Cynthia was.
"CC!" Megan shouted, running around the corner first.
Cynthia was resting in a bed with her left arm and leg in casts. Her head had a huge bump. "Guys? You all came to see me?"
"Yeah!" Abby added. "Meg, Chris, Dan and I all drove out!"
"Thank you guys so much!" she said.
I came up and saw her. "Hey. How are you feeling?"
"Like crap. My body's so sore."
Once the little group cleared, Cynthia told me to come close.
"I can't believe you came out with these people!" she said, almost angrily.
"Why? I don't have a car, and they were coming to see you."
"Look, I'm a nice person, but these guys are so annoying. You're nice, and you're my best friend and all, but these guys drive me nuts!"
I laughed.
"Don't laugh at me!"
"I'm not laughing at you, I'm laughing at your weird friends!"
She tried to hit me with her good arm, but missed. I sat down in a chair, and smiled at her.
"Well, I see how it is, Dan," she said playfully. "I'll get you."
I smiled, but lost my focus. My mind drifted to the vision of the blue eyes again.
"Hey, Dan? You ok there?"
"Yeah," I reassured. "Yeah, fine."
"You're staring off into space."
"Am not."
"What's on your mind?"
I didn't want to sound crazy. I let the idea go. "Nothing, how about you?"
"I've been laying almost motionlessly in an uncomfortable bed for the past twenty hours. What do you think I'm imagining?" she said sarcastically.
I didn't respond.
"Dan, you look like you've seen a ghost. Are you sure you're all there?"
"Fine," I said again.
Her friends returned, and after an hour of them talking to her, they decided it was time to go. I waved her goodbye and wished her a quick recovery, and blankly continued my window staring once in the car.
When we arrived back home, it was almost dark. I quickly got into my house and nervously locked the door behind me. I looked out the window, but there was nothing looking back at me. I breathed a sigh of relief. Maybe I was a little crazy, that's all.
Phil's POV
Once the night fell and I could venture out, I couldn't resist exploring around that house again. I want to be seen, but not run from or threatened. Maybe there were nicer people out there that wouldn't mind someone like me. With all these new positive thoughts, I just had to go and see.
The lights were out in the house, but I still sat on the ground and just watched it. Maybe I could meet someone one day, er... night, and make friends. I wasn't sure why, but staring into the eyes of a mortal gave me hope that I wasn't too horrible. Or maybe just too curious.
From the front window, a pair of dark eyes scoped out. I grinned, and ended up staring. My heart beat quickly in fear, but also in excitement.
In seconds, the eyes disappeared. Did they get scared of me? Did they not see me? Either way, my heart sank. I was back to being a nothing of a vampire.
Sadly, I turned away. I went back to my reflection. I looked at my fangs, and wished I could cut them off. I hated them. I picked up a small stone and threw it in the center of my face in the water, beginning to cry. I fell backwards to the ground, and I stayed there. I cried in the silence of night. I would never know what it's like to have a friend.
