Imagine Elijah being in love with you and only finding the courage to tell you when you're moving away

Elijah Mikaelson never really figured out what about you specifically intrigued him, but he was in fact head over heels in love with you. Perhaps it was your kind personality, which was really only one side of the coin, whereas the other hid a badass lady who had all the ingredients to becoming a villain, yet stayed with her loved ones loyally.

Perhaps it was your charming looks, from the breathtaking smile to the happily sparkling eyes. And, despite your occasional insecurity, you happened to be the most beautiful woman he had ever set his eyes on. But perhaps, it was your way to sneak out of your bedroom for a midnight snack, or your undying love towards fictional characters or your inappropriate but nonetheless amusing jokes.

There were many things about you that made you absolutely priceless to Elijah, the definite love of his everlasting life, yet he simply couldn't find the necessary confidence and courage within himself. He ached to hold you during the nights, make sure you slept well and feel your warm body against his, and he longed to taste your lip balm in the midst of a passionate kiss - but whenever he approached you with the plan of confessing his feelings to you, he ended up being rather dazed and confused at the sight of you dancing to a song you knew all the lyrics to, whilst wearing nothing but underwear and a large sweater with the title of your favorite TV series on it.

Most people had caught up on his massive crush on you, all except you. You were a clumsy, awkward girl with lots of quirks and flaws, and although you were close with all the Mikaelsons, and many more people, you by no means expected your favorite one to fall in love with you. In your opinion, there was nothing lovable about the way you could cry over a book for two days straight, but all these things that you did, just made Elijah fall in love more and more. You were flawless, but you didn't even bother to consider the possibility of him thinking that way.

He was afraid of telling you, because he was convinced you would only reject him. He wasn't the perfect boyfriend, he was aware of this, and he didn't want to put you in any more danger or make things awkward between you and him, so he swallowed his feelings and held them deep down in his heart where he aimed to hide them until the end of times.

But, the end was nearer than he expected.

The life in Mystic Falls, nor New Orleans, simply wasn't for you anymore. You aimed to do more with your life than save the world occasionally, even if you did love the thrill, but after so many years, you just wanted to leave the endless messes behind and see the new Captain America movie. You were just a human, and you knew that Mystic Falls had a shortage of those, which meant that they always got turned into something else or killed. Eventually, you'd be doomed as well, so you decided to run from the fate, considering it wasn't yet set in a stone or anything.

People tried to be happy for you, but as soon as the news reached Elijah Mikaelson's ears, he was heartbroken. The love of his life was going to drive away, leave behind the memories you had created together, and he hadn't even gotten the chance to tell you how he truly felt. He would never again find you in your bed binge-watching some TV series for the eighth hour, and he would never again see your gorgeous smile or hear your adorable giggles. Unless, he'd do something to stop you from leaving.

"Are you bloody insane? Y/N wants to leave, and god bless her for finally seeing why she should. I'm not happy she's going away, but we all know it's for the best. Let her go, while she still has a chance at a normal life." To say the least, Rebekah disagreed with her brother's plan that included lots of tears and emotions. Elijah understood Rebekah's point, but despite her many attempts to stop him from doing something so impulsive and downright idiotic, he decided to, just this once, be selfish and take what he wanted as his.

Elijah was scared, no doubt of it, because he knew that he was doing something incredibly stupid and risky, but he preferred that over letting you leave and never telling you. He had waited for far too long, but better late than never, correct? Therefore, he attempted to feel confident as he walked out of the Mikaelson house that night, starting his way to you, because he knew it was the right thing to do.

He found you outside of Mystic Grill where you were packing your car for one last time. You had visited your friends at the hangout, but it was getting late and dark and it was time for you to sit behind the wheel and begin driving to a destination you weren't sure of yet. You were going to let the road take you and allow your mood lead the way, not thinking or caring too much. You wanted to have fun, and enjoy life at its finest, and of course, getting over the faces you were about to leave behind would be a tough challenge, but you were going to try your best.

"Elijah", you breathed out when you saw him, "I was wondering when you'd come and say your goodbyes to me", as a wide smile tugged up your lips. You seemed happy, which you were, but it did hurt to know that you wouldn't see him again. You were closing this part of your life, putting it behind a lock without a key to open it, because it was for the best. But, for the first time that night, you felt genuinely sad and upset as you looked into Elijah's deep eyes. It was obvious you'd miss him the most.

"Yes, well, not quite. Forgive me, Y/N, but I must tell you something before I allow you to leave this town", Elijah cleared his throat, his eyes already stinging with tears but so far, he managed to keep them at bay instead of letting them escape as an endless flood. He exhaled heavily, the chilly air visible as he breathed, and he pushed his hands deeper in his pockets as he glanced at the dark night sky nervously, trying to collect himself and form smart sentences in his mind but he couldn't find a way to keep calm.

You lifted an eyebrow, more than willing to hear him out. "Yeah?", you nodded and smiled to make him continue, but concluding from his trembling and nervous behaviour, it was big news. You grew kind of worried yourself, tensing as you straightened your back and hoisted your body from the back of your car. You crossed your arms, and took a step closer to Elijah, calling out his name once or twice to make him snap back. It seemed like something was seriously wrong, and it scared you in more ways than you thought it might, but something about seeing Elijah so deeply shaken concerned you. A lot.

"I do not wish to upset you, I most certainly don't, but Y/N... I have realized, that I care about you more than I initally thought I would. I can't shake this feeling, this... urge to be with you. I--I'm in love with you", Elijah stuttered, feeling a sense of relief wash over him when he got it said and done, only for horror to come back around. Now, he had done what he so feared, but still had to wait for your reaction and it could be anything. Perhaps you'd smack him down with a disappointment, perhaps you'd laugh in his face, or perhaps, you'd even feel the same way.

"Please, tell me I'm not the only one who has felt the spark between us", Elijah added with a hopeful smile, breathing out while holding his gaze on yours. You opened your mouth to say something, but you had no clue what, so you just stood there with your lips parted, your eyes looking into Elijah's, your heart and mind racing against each other.

You knew that Mystic Falls was no longer safe for you, that you had to flee and start a new life elsewhere, but these news certainly changed at least some things. You didn't want to break Elijah's heart, but you didn't know if you could give him the answer he wanted to hear, either. You most certainly loved him back, it was something you had been feeling for a long time and hearing him confess his own feelings towards you only confirmed yours for him, but could you really throw your whole life away for this one man? Did you really love him that much?

"Y-You can't say something like that to a girl who's about to walk out of this life. That's not... That's not fair", you chuckled and glanced down at your feet while wiping your eyes, but there was no stopping the tears. What the hell were you supposed to do now?

You gave Elijah a sad smile, and he returned it immediately. The moment got a lot more awkward, and you were both clueless on what to do next, but somehow you found the courage to speak up again. "I can't stay, you know that", you sighed, giving him a taste of disappointment, but you weren't quite finished yet. "But, you could come with me?", you suggested with a hopeful look on your features, but you only got a sigh and a shake of his head as a response.

"The dangers would only follow you to wherever you aim to go", Elijah choked, his voice cracking and his hand quickly reaching his eyes to get rid of the tears he could no longer contain. You shook your head, not wanting to see him in heartbreak, the sight was just unbearable, so you walked over to him and wrapped your arms around him and closed him in a warm hug. He instantly did the same, and you were left in a soft embrace on the street, under the twinkling stars, on your final night in Mystic Falls.

Elijah's lips briefly touched the top of your head, giving you a single kiss which just made the both of you cry more. God, how dumb was he? He should have told you sooner, or not tell at all, but this was just wrong. Now, you had to live in the knowledge that you ripped out his heart and stomped on it by leaving him in Mystic Falls, and he had to live with the pain caused by your absence and the fact that you didn't love him enough to stay with him.

It was a bittersweet moment, but to make it a tad sweeter, you took his hand. "I know this hurts, but you should know, that I love you too", you mumbled against his chest. "And that this totally reminds me of that one One Direction song", you added, making him laugh in the dark night, the empty streets echoing with his bubbly laughter. You couldn't help but smile - at least you could still make him do that.

"Well, I guess it's officially time for you to learn how to use Skype so we can see each other every day. Goodbye, Elijah", you spoke heavily sighing, as you let go of him and took a step back. You smiled at him weakly, and he did the same, and after simply waving your hand at each other, you sat inside your car and drove away.

Away from Elijah, and the Mikaelsons, and Mystic Falls and all its residents and secret hideaways - you left all that behind, and you never came back. But, that still wasn't the last of you and Elijah Mikaelson, if anything, it was merely the beginning.
