Imagine being in a relationship with Elijah but when Hayley confesses her feelings to him, you leave New Orleans and tell him to be with Hayley, but he later he finds you in Mystic Falls and convinces you that he loves you the most
It was certainly hard to be in a relationship with an Original vampire. But, you could handle bloodthirsty supernatural beings wanting your boyfriend's and his family's heads on a stick, and the inevitable constant danger you were in, just because you lived under the same roof with the Mikaelsons. What you couldn't handle, though, was another woman, thirsty for the same affection you received, from the very same man.
Ever since you and Elijah moved to New Orleans to follow Niklaus and his intentions, you had been suspicious of Hayley who turned out to be pregnant with Klaus' hybrid baby. You would have been fine with her being a part of the family, if she just hadn't gotten so close with Elijah. You had a reason to be intimidated, you considered her much prettier and greater than yourself, and you knew that love was found in odd places, so you feared that Elijah would find some in the girl who carried his brother's child. Of course it was messed up, but when would an Original vampire's life not be?
You were threatened, but Elijah tried to convince you there was nothing to worry about. But even if he claimed to only have eyes for you, you could see how affectionate Hayley was towards him, and you couldn't blame her, after all you had the most handsome, wonderful man right by your side, but he was taken, and he was yours, and that bothered you to a whole other level, because the young werewolf didn't seem to have any kind of filter. At times, it almost seemed like she failed to acknowledge your existence, even if you stood in front of her, because you could very well hear the flirtatious shade in her voice as she spoke to Elijah so fondly.
You hated it - but you tried to remain calm and reasonable. For now, there was nothing to worry about, because Elijah did stay by your side, did he not?
But, at some point, things were destined to go south on you and that time arrived on a particularly busy, eventful night. Elijah and Klaus were busy with their whole "Rule New Orleans" plan, and they had only returned from running errands concerning the war between the Mikaelsons and Marcel and his army, and you were approaching Elijah's bedroom to give him a kiss and ask about his day, but someone had been quicker than you.
You stopped at Elijah's door when you heard Hayley's almost too familiar voice, your heart sinking in you as you rested against the wall nearby, your hand meeting your mouth to quiet down the heartbroken sighs and gasps that rose from your throat, tears building up in your eyes as you listened to the wolf speak to your beloved Elijah. She had already slept with one Mikaelson, was that not enough for her?
"I'm in love with you. It took me a while, but I realized that I do have strong feelings for you, and as much as I want to be sorry, I'm not. I love you, Elijah", you heard Hayley explain, and that was enough for you. You couldn't hear more, your heart had already been shattered to pieces, and you knew that if Elijah would have to make a choice, he would choose Hayley. She had done so much more for the Mikaelson family, she united them with this miracle baby, and she was so flawless compared to you, so you had no doubts - Elijah was out of your reach already. He slipped from your fingertips, and you lost him to Hayley.
You stormed away from the room, and as you ran down the stairs, Elijah could hear you and your sobs that you let escape your mouth. You tried to be quiet, but you were deeply upset and as soon as Elijah heard you approach the front door and open it to leave, he jumped up and pushed Hayley aside to go after you. You slammed the door shut, wanting to find a bar where you could drown your sorrows in multiple drinks, until you'd find the courage to go back home, though only to pack your stuff and get your car so you could drive back to Mystic Falls, which you now considered more of a home than the Mikaelson mansion that only made you cry as you thought about it.
You ended up in bar you had never seen before, and it didn't seem to be too popular either, so you expected to be save from Elijah there. Of course, he could always track you with the help of some witches, but you hoped for the best, and ordered your first drink as you wiped away your tears, not wanting to cry in public but it was a challenge. You hated being so weak, but it was hard to react in a different way after hearing that someone else had fallen for your boyfriend, and decided to pursue those feelings. It was scary, and you feared, and knew, that Elijah would choose Hayley over you.
As much as you wanted to smack Hayley, kick her ass and tell her to back off from your man, you could only drink, cry and repeat. You didn't have the strength, or the audacity to defy Hayley, knowing very well that she would only win, and after all, she was pregnant and your attempts to beat her wouldn't be much appreciated in a situation like that.
You returned to the mansion only when you felt confident enough to do so. Or, that was what you originally aimed to do, but after several hours at the bar, you came to the conclusion that you were broken, and there was no hope to be fixed, so instead of waiting for a miracle to happen, you swallowed your tears and made your way to the house full of heartbreak.
Had you been a fool for thinking Elijah and you could live happily ever after? It was perhaps quite obvious that something would separate you from each other, whether it would be your death caused by one of his several enemies, or the love someone else felt for him. And now it had happened, and you weren't going to stand aside and watch them be happy together, or stay with Elijah and deal with Hayley's undeniable anger and jealousy. Even if Elijah did stay with you, you couldn't live knowing that you and him lived in the same house with the girl who was in love with him.
You were going to leave. You were going to leave New Orleans behind, and return to Mystic Falls where you'd be reunited with the Salvatores, and many other friends you turned your back on only to be with Elijah, which didn't apparently end too well.
You opened the door of the house, and your arrival sparked interest in the residents inside, and the siblings gathered around to see you, but without a shred of attention towards them, you made your way upstairs and to the room you shared with Elijah. He wasn't there, so you let out a breath of relief before grabbing a bag and stuffing most of your stuff there. Clothes, personal items and things you considered essential, and on top of it all, a picture of you and Elijah, just to go down the memory lane some day.
"My love, what is this?", Elijah broke your concentration, and you quickly wiped your eyes after breaking into tears again. You stopped packing, and turned to face him, your heartbroken expression making him mirror it in the utmost sadness that your sorrowing brought him. He never wanted to see you so miserable, but there was undeniable discomfort on your features, and it was easy for him to tell that you had heard what Hayley had told him. Just not what he told her after you ran away.
"I can't compete against Hayley. I'm in a whole other league than her", you chuckled, "I can't stay here, knowing that she loves you. And I know, that you most likely love her back, so I'm leaving so you can be together", and wiped your eyes while avoiding eye contact with Elijah who no longer felt like a soulmate. It felt like you were distant, standing miles away, and his presence made you feel awkward and uncomfortable. Funny, how things could change in one night.
"I want you to be happy, Elijah, but I guess that's not with me. And, after thinking about it for a while, I realized that I couldn't be happy here. I'm not supposed to be here, or with you", you continued, but couldn't say more when tears fought the between them and you. They got an upper hand, and you choked on them, looking down as you let out a heartwrenching sob, breaking Elijah's heart with each word and each movement.
But you had to think about yourself. You couldn't live there for any longer, you couldn't look at Hayley anymore, nor at Elijah, knowing that someone else wanted the affection he had to give, and that he probably preferred giving it to someone else anyway. You sighed, and turned to your bag, zipping it before throwing the strap over your shoulder and getting ready to leave. You walked to Elijah, and stood next to him, your gaze lowered, because you just couldn't look him right in the eyes.
"I'm sorry. I love you", you breathed out, "tell Klaus and Rebekah I love them too", and tried to smile, but it was feeble and faint, and impossible to take as a sincere one. Without a single word added to what you had already said, you walked out of the door, and left behind a crying ex-boyfriend who didn't get the chance to speak. Coldly, you walked out of the house, and sat inside your car, gripping the wheel tightly as you cried, knowing that although it hurt, it had to be done.
Perhaps the saying, "If you love someone, set them free", now meant something to you.

You didn't enjoy leaving the Mikaelsons, because you had considered them, more or less, a family. But when you returned to Mystic Falls, you forgot about them for a night or two, because you had some kind of a family there too, and leaving them had hurt as well. But now, you were reunited, and you were more than glad to catch up on things with everyone, from Bonnie to the latest so called villain, Silas who was apparently Stefan's equally hot doppelgänger.
You hadn't realized how much you missed the small town and its residents, but as soon as you returned, it all dawned on you and leaving New Orleans didn't seem so terrible anymore.
You were happy, although it was no secret that you spent a lot of time thinking about Elijah and Hayley, together and apart. You missed others too, but Elijah was your main concern, while you couldn't be less interested in the young werewolf girl, but you tried to be mature and feel like you did the right thing. You knew that things between you and Elijah couldn't be the same ever again, but you did miss being on his arms, after all he did pretty much nothing wrong and you still loved him, but you couldn't share a house with someone who loved him just like you did. Life in New Orleans, with them, was way too complicated and you liked to be in Mystic Falls, surrounded by people who loved you, but it was true that you missed Elijah. Maybe one day his picture would finally fade from your head.
Meanwhile, Elijah was just downright miserable. He didn't love Hayley, not like he loved you. Sure, the girl was family now, and therefore he tried to treat her with kindness, but he only wanted you. And, even if he would have loved Hayley, he couldn't do the thing that was the only reason you ever left him. He wished things could be like they used to, and he knew that without you, he couldn't be his own self or be happy or concentrate on anything, so he asked Klaus to contact Caroline. And the three of them started to cook up a plan to reunite you and Elijah eventually.
You suspected nothing. Admittedly, Caroline did seem to be out of character, but you didn't feel like questioning her would be polite after you returned to their lives so suddenly, so you kept your mouth shut, which made the girl very happy. Because she was indeed up to something - she and Klaus had been talking for the past days, and finally, the plan was about to take place right in Mystic Falls, in your own house that you once walked away from, but had settled back into.

"It's late, I better get back home and make sure Damon didn't drink all of our booze", Stefan was the first one to break the group apart on a calm Saturday evening. Silas had put his plans for mass destruction aside, and the town seemed to be at peace, at least for one weekend and it gave you and the gang time to meet up at the Grill where you had spent time laughing, eating and talking for the past three hours. It had been nice, but it was indeed late, and your friends started to vanish from around you.
"Same here. Can I get a ride?", Elena asked, and Stefan nodded with a warm smile - so the two of them were soon gone. The others began leaving as well, until only you and Caroline were left in the hangout, but you were tired as well so after a goodbye hug and mentions of the earlier told hilarious inside jokes, you and her parted ways and you walked out of Mystic Grill to go home.
It was an ordinary night, so you didn't expect anything miraculous to happen, but that was indeed what you faced as you parked your car on your driveway. You could only step out, when you saw Elijah standing on your porch with a bouquet of red roses in hand, beautiful, sexy and meaningful and definitely worth your gaze as you approached him nervously.
Your eyes eventually rose from the flowers, and you looked at Elijah who was nervous as well, but tried to smile warmly at you to make you feel more comfortable in his presence. He looked just as handsome as you had remembered, with the slight stubble, sharp jawline that he clenched as he adored your beauty, the intense eyes that followed your every move as if you were the center of the universe. He was dressed in a suit, as usual, and the temptation to touch him, place a hand on his chest and feel his strong body underneath the well-made fabric was strong, but possible to resist. Compared to him, in a suit, with flowers and a flawlessly styled hair, you felt like utter trash in your sweatpants and baggy sweater with your favorite band's logo smacked onto it.
It wasn't too cold outside, but shivers went down your spine as you tucked away some hair that had fallen out of your sloppily made bun. Elijah smiled at your natural beauty, how you looked so at home here, and he admired how you managed to find peace, whilst he failed to do so, therefore he found his way back to you to make things right after they went so wrong so easily. He intended to get you back, and he offered you his most charming smile and the fondest look sparkled in his eyes, as he handed the roses to you.
"Evening, dear Y/N. I hope I am not bothering or interrupting anything", he spoke, giving you a small nod as you took the flowers with your trembling hands. You licked your lips swiftly, and glanced at the dark night sky, illuminated by beautiful stars, though eventually you found the strength to lower your gaze back to Elijah before shaking your head. You were happy to see him, and the fact that he searched for you, and found you, and with flowers, meant something to you. Maybe something good would come out of this. And that was why you felt brave, and decided to take the risk.
"No, of course not", you breathed out, and swallowed thickly as you opened your front door. "Would you like to come inside?", you asked, and looked into his eyes, but when your eyes locked, your heart sank and you had to turn away, knowing that sooner or later, you'd start to cry. It was actually kind of amazing you didn't cry yet, but the lump in your throat was undeniable and you knew that you couldn't fight the tears forever. You were prepared to weep, but for now, you stayed strong, as you stepped inside.
"I'd love to", was Elijah said, his raspy voice making you feel like you needed to sit down for a second, it had been so long since you heard it, but instead you walked further into the house and welcomed him in. He shut the door behind him, and found the time to look around the familiar house, standing there with his hands deep in the pockets of his trench coat while you went in the kitchen to put the flowers in some water.
Once you returned, things got suddenly awkward. For you, at least. You didn't know why Elijah had come to you, but obviously he had to have a reason, so you were prepared to hear it and stood there in silence, opposite him, your body feeling the craving to be on his arms but you filled the longing by hugging yourself tightly while rocking back and forth on your toes. It was quiet, awkward, and you hated it, but at the same time, you were happy to see Elijah, although he didn't look too well.
It was evident that he had missed you. He was on the verge of tears just like you, and his eyes were shining with love at its finest, utmost longing painted on his sharp features as he observed you. He still missed you, although you were right there, but he could no longer run to you, take you on his arms and kiss you passionately, although you had to admit, the thought did cross your mind too. That was what you wanted, but first, you needed to know about him and Hayley, and whatever was between them.
"Can I tell you what actually happened on the night you left New Orleans?", Elijah asked after clearing his throat, looking around as he felt a burn in his eyes, knowing tears were about to stream down on his cheeks but he tried to stay strong. He returned his gaze to you, and you tried to swallow the lump in your throat, but it only went to weigh on your heart, yet you were ready to hear him out and get the full truth, so you nodded your head to confirm he had your permission to proceed.
"Hayley came to me, and like you most likely heard, she confessed her feelings to me. I was shocked, surprised... But the first thought that came to me, was you. I thought of you, because I knew that I could never leave you, that I love you far too much, that I would never do anything that could even remotely cause you any kind of pain. And I was sad, because I knew I would have to break Hayley's heart, because I would never think of her as anything else but a friend, and family, but that is all", Elijah began, his voice making your head dizzy, each word causing you to feel more and more guilty. You closed your eyes, and your lower lip wobbled as the first tears came out, sliding to your cheeks while you listened to Elijah's heartbreaking story.
"I loved you Y/N, and I still do. I was about to tell Hayley that, and how I could never be with her, but then I heard you and I went after you. But I realized that you probably didn't want to see either of us, so I remained put, and let you take your time. But, then you came back, and I was too shocked to even say anything, so you left and I foolishly let you go", Elijah continued, and all you could do was nod as he added more and more to violently twist your heart with every word. You felt so guilty. You had done so much wrong, caused so much heartache.
Although, it was true that even if Elijah did all of that, you still couldn't live with Hayley. You couldn't even look at her - even thinking about her hurt you and made you want to do things you'd end up regretting.
"Ever since, me and Niklaus have been working together to get you back on my arms, my love. He contacted Miss Forbes, who then helped us to track you down and that is how I ended up here. To tell you, that it was all just a big misunderstanding, and that I still love you with all of my heart, and always will. Please, tell me you still love me just as much, and promise me you will let me take you back to New Orleans, or stay here with you", Elijah finished his story, breaking your heart to bits and pieces only to mend it right away.
It was a bittersweet tale, one that made you feel pain but at the same time, relief. Because you had done stupidly, you had left without clarifying things, you had walked out on Elijah without giving him a chance to explain himself, but at least he didn't give up on you. At least he still loved you. And yes, you loved him back.
"I do", you spoke up, your voice weak and cracking as you quietly cried. "I love you, Elijah, I always did and I always will", you nodded, "but I can't go to New Orleans, not as long as Hayley is there. Though, I will gladly let you stay here with me", promising Elijah what he asked you to. His lips broke into a smile, and you did the same, knowing now that it would all be well in the end, if not already.
As soon as you had told Elijah you loved him, he stepped towards you, his hands pulling out of his pockets to cup your cheeks when he reached you. You went on your tiptoes, reaching towards him and finding support from his shoulders and the back of his head when your lips crashed together in a sweet, somewhat rough kiss. You closed your eyes, and Elijah did the same as he held you close, your body against his, and your lips moving perfectly with each other. He was so warm, and came with a sense of safety that made you melt closer, wanting to feel all of it. He radiated with love, and the intense kiss and the tears that mixed together, was all enough to tell the both of you that you loved each other more than anyone or anything.
"Mystic Falls it is", he muttered against your lips, before giving you a new kiss.
"I bet Damon will be just downright blissful", you chuckled, and Elijah laughed with you, while his arms snaked around you to take you on his arms. So you were back with each other, and you understood that New Orleans wasn't your home, neither was Mystic Falls - it was with Elijah.
