Imagine dating Elijah and finding out that Klaus is in love with you too

Silence had the whole Mikaelson residence surrounded, wrapped in its eerie atmosphere, only broken when two hands grabbed the sliding doors between the foyer and the living room, closing until the rooms were perfectly separated. Klaus stared at his hands for a while, and then dropped them from the door, shutting away the sight of his brother, Elijah, and his beloved Y/N, and turned to face his therapist who was seated on the edge of the couch with a pen and a notebook in hand.

The clock on the wall ticked in a repetitive manner, and it held Klaus' attention so tightly he didn't notice when Camille spoke up, not for the first, nor the second time, but when she repeated her words for the third time, the hybrid turned to look at the blonde with a blank face. His expression was impossible to read, and it caused Cami to be rather nervous in his company, but nonetheless, she tried to stay brave and confident, even when Klaus started to approach the opposite couch to take a seat.

"Tell me about her", Cami spoke yet again, wanting to get an answer from Klaus who started to smile at the mention of the love of his life. His knees bent and his hands grabbed the almost empty glass from the coffee table, drawing a careful sip between his lips as he sat down, his eyes locked with Cami's, the happy smile still plastered on his face. The silence was almost impossible to bear with, and from the wild heartbeat Klaus could hear in her chest, he could tell that Cami was praying for the situation mixed with awkwardness and unpredictable, potential danger to end, so the Original decided to save her from the moment and parted his lips to answer.

"She is, the most beautiful woman I have ever set my eyes on", Klaus began, his fingers tapping against the edge of the glass, while his eyes looked at the liquid at the bottom of it, though once in a while he glanced at Cami who was warily sitting on the couch, ready to jump out of the nearest window if the moment would take a turn to a less enjoyable direction. "I sometimes wake up to her laughing three rooms away. I have killed people for less than waking me up. But, she makes waking up in the middle of a good dream worth it. And I think, her laugh might be one of the, if not the most amazing sound there is", Klaus continued, deciding to ignore his therapist's evident fear.

"She is marvelous. The way she looks at things she loves, the way she defends her friends to her last breath, and the way she even stands is enough for me to know that I want to spend each of my eternal days with her. I wish to wake up next to her, give her all the kisses I like, protect her no matter what and be the one she relies on, the one she goes to in joy and in sorrow", Klaus continued, growing more and more intense by the second, his voice becoming rougher and his expression hardening as he fell into deep thoughts of the girl he so much loved. Cami could tell it was a sensitive subject, and one that could go on for years. Although Klaus had already poured out so much of his heart, they had barely scratched the surface. His love was endless.

"Then what's stopping you? From doing all of those things? What, or who, is holding you back?", Cami asked, hoping she wasn't pushing all the wrong buttons, but she knew Klaus needed to let it all out so she gave him the chance to do so.

But, before Klaus could reply, the doors were slid open and the moment between the hybrid and the therapist was broken by you. You stepped inside the room, and apologized for interrupting while a wide smile danced on your lips, your feet moving you to the drawer where you had left your car keys. Klaus smiled, not minding your interruption, if anything he was sad to see you leave, but eventually you did with the keys in your hand. You closed the doors, and the room fell back into silence.

Camille was growing restless, and she tapped her pen against the notes, staring at Klaus, still waiting for an answer. "You are clearly in love. Why don't you just tell this girl about how you feel?", she insisted, wanting to dig deeper. Klaus chuckled, and finished his drink before placing it on the coffee table, where he lifted his feet while resting against the couch, offering Cami a heartbroken look he tried to mask with amusement. But a blind person could have seen how much in pain Klaus was.

"She is, unfortunately, in a relationship with my brother", Klaus spoke sharply, letting Cami know that it was you he had fallen for. You were the girl he talked so fondly of, the girl of his dreams and the one he would gladly wed under the eyes of his family.

But he did not know, that Camille wasn't the only one he shared this information with. Because, as the curious young woman you were, you stayed on the other side of the doors, wanting to know who Klaus was so desperately in love with. Only to find out, it was indeed, you.

You never again looked at Klaus the way you used to. You couldn't. Him calling you love wasn't the same anymore, and being alone with him terrified you, made you inexplicably nervous. He was no longer the Klaus who was like a brother to you - he was now the Klaus that loved you even though you were dating Elijah. And it inevitably made you question, who were you supposed to be with?

You started to notice the jealous looks Klaus shot at Elijah whenever he didn't notice. You began becoming uncomfortable with kissing and embracing Elijah in his brother's presence, and you tried to save Klaus from the heartache but for the sake of acting normal, you attempted to push the mean thoughts to the back of your head. Though, you had to admit, you weren't sure of anything anymore. What if you and Klaus were meant to be together? And if not, how could you possibly save him from destroying himself in heartbreak?

How would you even approach him about his feelings, if you should at all - which was a silly thing to even consider, because naturally you would have to have the conversation. But things were harder now, and you were a confused mess, and if that was what you were, you couldn't even imagine what kind of hell Klaus was going through.

  "I love you, darling."

Deep in your thoughts, you failed to hear or in any way acknowledge what Elijah said to you, and you barely processed the gesture he engaged in as he wrapped his arms around you and closed you in a loving embrace. Your eyes were open, breath was flowing through you and you seemed quite awake and alive, yet you were not in this moment. You were thinking, dreaming, wondering, and you couldn't stop. You couldn't stop bothering yourself with the weight that knowing about Klaus' feelings brought you. It felt like you were guilty of something, like you were responsible.

Elijah knitted his eyebrows together, and his thumb traveled to your jaw so he could raise your head and lock his gaze with yours. As soon as your eyes met, you snapped back to the situation at hand, and you nodded while stammering out an apology to make up for your absence. "I love you too, 'Lijah", you muttered, and placed a careful kiss on his soft lips. "Be careful", you added, and touched his cheek gently, caressing the skin while closing your eyes.

He had a meeting with Marcel, and in no time, he was already gone and you could no longer feel his body against yours nor his flawless face underneath your warm touch. You swallowed thickly, and opened your eyes, turning your gaze from the empty space in front of you to Klaus who was sitting by the kitchen table. He looked right back at you, and his intense stare made you shiver, but you decided to be brave and hold the eye contact while your fingers fumbled with the hem of your shirt.

"Everything alright, love?", Klaus asked kindly, offering to hear your troubles and worries, and it broke your heart. You had been so close, best friends for sure, but after finding out he was in love with you, nothing had been the same. Usually you would have went to him right away, if something troubled you, but now, he was more or less the reason behind your frown and you weren't sure how to tell him. But, without control, the words just came out of your mouth and you created an awkward silence in the kitchen that was empty of everyone but you and him.

  "I know."

Klaus' face was blank for a second, and he looked like a statue - one wonderfully sculpted, really - but then he broke into a nervous laughter. "You know what exactly?", he asked, trying to maintain a calm state but you could tell havoc was breaking in his heart. He was a mess inside, his mind was screaming at him and he wanted the ground to swallow him whole, there was no doubt of it, and therefore you attempted to make him comfortable and approach the matter carefully and in a friendly manner.

"I know you're in love with me", you spoke, and Klaus got up to leave, but you quickly rushed to his side and took his hand to stop him. "But it's okay!", you hurried to say, "or, not okay, really, but I don't blame you or hate you. Please, talk to me about it", holding his hand and offering him a compassionate look. Klaus looked into your eyes sadly, and it was easy to tell that he was on the verge of tears and it brought you to the same point.

What you and him had was so beautiful. You had a wonderful friendship, and you considered him your family, but it was all on the line now. The beautiful bond was in danger, and you knew you were living the moment where you'd find out whether it would blow to bits or come out even stronger. You didn't want to lose Klaus, but you didn't want to lose Elijah either. What the hell were you supposed to do?

"I am by no means sorry. I do not regret falling for you, although I could not stop myself even if I wanted to. You are the most incredible girl ever, Y/N, and yes, I love you, but I don't expect you to feel the same way. I'm not trying to break you and Elijah apart, I only wish for you to be happy. But, maybe, I dream of you finding happiness beside me", Klaus rambled, his voice laced with evident sadness, his eyes now avoiding yours and his whole body leaning in the opposite direction. He was nervous, uncomfortable, he wanted to leave and never come back and you could tell, but you didn't want him to be that way.

You pulled him closer to you, and wrapped your arms around him to give him a big, warm hug. Maybe you couldn't tell him that you loved him too, but you still wanted to hug him, hold him, talk to him and laugh with him. You cared about him, truly, and it ached you to know that things could maybe never go back to how they were. Love, was the worst, yet the best thing ever, and sometimes it tended to cause only pain for some people. Like to Klaus, who was in love with his best friend, who also happened to date his brother. Not too easy to deal with such.

"I'm sorry I don't feel the same way. I don't want to hurt you, it would never be my intention but you know I love Elijah", you murmured against his shoulder, tears falling onto your cheek and eventually, to Klaus' shirt. He nodded, and eased into the hug, wrapping his own arms around you, wanting to feel you as close as only possible even though it felt like being punched in the heart. He was afraid that it was one of the last times he'd get to do this, because sooner or later you'd drift apart. As much as you wanted the opposite, you both knew that you couldn't have your usual A.M conversations anymore or treat each other like you used to.

He was in love with you, and that was just something you had to deal with, whether you felt the same way or not.

"I feel like bloody Damon Salvatore", Klaus mumbled, making you laugh gently which was enough to make him smile although tears were flooding out of his eyes in an endless stream. You looked up at him, and placed a careful kiss on his cheek, wanting him to know that you still cared. You didn't hate him for feeling what he did - it wasn't like he could not do it.

There you stood then, hugging each other, your minds lingering on the other. And although it was hard, if you would have to choose at some point, you knew which one you would pick.
