Imagine Alaric proposing to you

  "Oh, god, I'm so sorry!"

Blushing, you gave the man you had bumped into, a deeply apologetic look as your hand went over to his chest and tried to somehow save his shirt from the tea you had already poured all over him. He laughed lightly, although the grimace on his face meant that the tea had still been hot and he really didn't appreciate you doing this. You felt like crying, because he was really hot and his chest felt really nice, but you had embarrassed yourself completely and in the process, managed to ruin his shirt and probably burn his skin, too.

"And I'm sorry for feeling you up, too", you awkwardly added as you removed your hands from his pecs, understanding that it was irrelevant now that the damage had been done. You covered your face with your palms after throwing the empty tea cup away, and your heart ached as you realized what a fool you had made of yourself. You dropped your hands, and sighed heavily while thinking to yourself, "Cool, now your chances with his super hot guy are 100% blown to bits", the thoughts only intensifying when the stranger burst into laughter. He sounded like an angel, and you sighed again, but this time it was more adoring and you were pretty sure he noticed, concluding from the lift of an eyebrow he offered you.

"It's all good. I didn't like this shirt very much, anyway", he spoke, his voice smooth like velvet, and his blue eyes locking with yours, making you inhale sharply. He was so attractive, you could barely understand how he was even real, and you ended up admiring his features for a bit too long and he waved his hand in front of you to make you snap out of it. You didn't know it of course, but he did in fact try to flirt with you, and the smirk on his lips was intended to be charming, which it was but you didn't exactly pick up on his hints.

"You're just saying that to make me feel better", you said, blushing heavily again and to hide your red cheeks, you looked down. You didn't want him to see how awkward you were, though it was far too late - he had already picked up this habit of yours, but he found it absolutely adorable. Frankly, he thought you were incredibly beautiful, and your shyness was just cute, and he could already feel himself falling in love. He wasn't very lucky when it came to love, and for some time, he had already given up and didn't believe in love at first sight, but this was definitely it.

He laughed at your words, and you looked back up, feeling the need to see his eyes crinkle and his head tilt back. He was genuinely amused in your company, and you didn't know if that was bad or good, because you had made an utter fool of yourself, but maybe he thought you were being cute. You didn't know, but you could have sworn you saw a hint of fondness shadowing the wide smile on his pink lips. You swallowed, and tried to smile too, after realizing that things weren't going so bad. At least he wasn't rude to you and left you alone - he stuck around, even after you poured your tea down his shirt and that meant something.

"Maybe. Is it working?", he asked, not able to hold back his happy smile. He already felt comfortable around you, and he just wanted to stay there for the rest of the day, not seeing the point of leaving. At least not before he got your name and number, because he was pretty sure he just bumped into his soulmate and he had no intentions to just turn his back on that.

You nodded shyly, but managed to let out a light chuckle which made him smile even more. "I'm Y/N, and I totally owe you a new shirt. I think I might have some of my ex-boyfriend's shirts still in my apartment-- and wow, that sounded less pathetic in my head, but anyway, if you'd like to borrow one, you could stop by", you suggested, and offered him your hand so he could shake it. He gently took it, and you felt like melting as he tightly, yet somehow softly gripped your hand and shook it. God, how you loved him already. Even the slightest of touches made your knees wobble, and it was pretty clear by now that you had fallen for him just like he had fallen for you.

"I'm Alaric, and I'd like that, really. I also totally owe you a new cup of tea, so, are you free tonight?", he introduced himself, and grinned after asking you out so smoothly. You opened your mouth, but you were so shocked that you couldn't say anything, only breathe heavily and struggle with believing that he was for real. But the hopeful, happy smile on his lips seemed quite sincere and it made you smile as well.

  "I'd love to."

After two years, after that cliche of a first meeting, after first dates, first kisses and first times, after devoting your love to each other for a billion times, after being stamped as the power couple of Mystic Falls, after jealousy, heartache, lust, pure love - Alaric finally decided to take the next big step. He wanted to take your relationship on a whole new level, meaning marriage. For two years, you had been happily dating, and things were so perfect, he knew that proposing to you was only the right thing to do.

He wanted to spend the rest of his life with you.

Alaric realized it on a very normal, rather boring Sunday. You were both sitting on the couch in the living room of your shared house, your legs tangled as you were nose deep in a book for the second hour, your glasses hanging on your nose and Alaric's eyes focused on the TV screen where a marathon of some crappy guilty pleasure kind of a reality show was rolling. Eventually, your laughter that you couldn't contain because of the absolutely lovable characters of the book, drew Alaric's attention away from the TV and he turned to look at you with a small smile, his eyes adoring the sight of his girlfriend.

My god, I want to marry this amazing woman, was the first thought that pushed into his mind as he looked at you smile at the words on the page. You looked so naturally beautiful, without make-up, with your hair tied up, and your body covered with a pair of pyjama shorts and one of the shirts you stole from Alaric after being together for a couple of weeks. You were stunning, and he couldn't stop thinking about how much he loved you, and how badly he wanted to call you his wife.

"What are you thinking about?", you asked when your eyes met and you caught him gazing at you. You looked at him, admiring his features, loving each inch of him and becoming unable to stop a smile from spreading onto your lips. He chuckled, and took your hand, squeezing it tightly as if he was afraid you'd leave if he let go even for a second. He leaned over to you, and pressed a quick kiss to your cheek, before shaking his head and going back to his spot.

"Nothing", he replied, not wanting to reveal his plans, "nothing at all."

But on that very same night, he called Damon to ask for his help with finding the perfect ring for his future wife.

///

"Just so you know, I am so not happy with being your second best friend, and-- Is that a hickey on your neck?"

Annoyed, Alaric looked over to Damon and shot him a look that pretty much meant, "Shut the fuck up", even though he didn't say a single word but it was quite effective. Damon didn't understand which of his chosen words were too inappropriate, so he just shrugged, but to please his best buddy, he dropped the matter and didn't proceed to rant about the mark on Alaric's neck, indeed caused by you.

"You should be grateful. You do realize, that I'm asking you to help me with choosing an engagement ring, because I'm going to ask Y/N to marry me, right?", Alaric explained and gave Damon a stern look as they walked over to the rings on display.

Alaric was nervous, naturally, and he wanted to choose the perfect ring, and pay for it, instead of having Damon get it for free with some compulsion. He wanted you to know that he was serious about this, that he cared about you deeply and wanted to spend the rest of his days by your side. He wanted to do this right.

"Yes, and by the way, I totally ship it, but as your second best friend, I'm kind of obliged to ask this... Are you sure you want to do this?", Damon cleared his throat and gave Ric a look, ready to hear any kind of an answer, but he only shot the Salvatore a frustrated, partly even shocked look.

"Hey, just following the bro code, I swear!", Damon insisted with an innocent look twisting his sharp features as he lifted his hands. Alaric rolled his eyes, and managed to shake his head as well, but then confirmed that he was positive about this. He loved you more than anyone ever, and the sooner he could call you Y/N Saltzman, the better.

"I think that one is very Y/N-like. Meaning, she'd probably like it", Damon pointed out then, and showed Alaric a ring that was in fact kind of perfect. He patted Damon's shoulder as a thank you, and adored the ring, which kind of made him emotional but to avoid public humiliation, he didn't start to cry yet, and proceeded to buy the ring. He knew it was the right one, and he couldn't wait to see it shining on your finger.

After buying the ring, they left the shop and Damon found time to explain how much he really supported your relationship. He knew what it felt like to be so in love, and he was happy that his buddy had finally found that special girl to marry. And Damon absolutely loved you, you were fun and had that sassy side he always enjoyed to witness. Everyone loved you, though Alaric did the most.

"Thanks, buddy. And oh, you might be my second best friend but it's a thin line. Y/N just happens to be my soulmate, kind of. And there's things I can only do with her, I guess", Alaric explained as they started to part ways, him heading to his car and Damon making his way towards his own one on the other side of the street.

"Yeah, like having sex", Damon chuckled, thinking Ric couldn't hear him, but he did, though all he could do was let that wide smirk take over his pink lips.

Meet me in the corner of Floyd Street and East Street at 7 pm, please? Love you baby girl x - Ric

Your eyes were staring at the note in your hands, found from the kitchen counter with familiar handwriting on it. You were somewhat confused, but it didn't stop the smile from arriving at your lips, after all, you were up for a surprise. And what a surprise it would be. You had no clue what to expect, but you were definitely going to find out, because you didn't only appreciate him doing something like this for you, but you were happy that he still, after two years, found ways to make you smile and tried his best to keep you happy. And he did a good job on that.

The address sounded familiar to you, but somehow you couldn't put your finger on it. You ignored the thought eventually, and moved into the bedroom to get ready, since 7 p.m was only a few hours away, and you had to look pretty, but not too much, which would be a challenge. You never knew what to wear, and Alaric's usual "you look beautiful in anything", didn't exactly help. You wanted answers, but you did appreciate the compliments. He was always so sweet and caring, and sometimes, you had to stop and think, how did you ever get this lucky?

Although it was an embarrassing moment and a memory that always made you blush, you were very glad that you bumped into him that day, and spilled your tea all over him. The memories made you want to laugh and cry at the same time, and as if your thoughts were somehow connected to Alaric's, you found yourself thinking about the best moments of your relationship. It was like you knew something big was going to happen, yet you cluelessly danced around the room in a sundress that Alaric loved on you, thinking there wouldn't be a single reason to cry tonight.

With the sundress, and your favorite shoes on, you left the house when it was almost 7 p.m. You had no idea what you were walking into, but you expected much less than what was really in the corner of Floyd Street and East Street. You found your way there quickly, and as you started to come closer, you started to recognize the surroundings and they made you giggle. You remembered the trees, the houses and the road you were walking on, recognizing the place as where you met Alaric for the first time. The place where you bumped into him, like people did in crappy chick flicks, but you were happy that it happened. Alaric changed your life, to better and he made you happier than anything or anyone. You could no longer imagine your life without him.

"What is this?", you asked yourself, knowing no one could hear you but it was a question you had to ask even if you'd get no answer. Your jaw dropped, and you adored the familiar surroundings, struggling to believe that Alaric had planned something this great, but oh, how much better it was going to get.

After your eyes had wandered around wildly, taking in every detail of the place, they looked forward and you saw a sight that made you gasp instantly. You brought a hand to your mouth, and you stopped walking, only stood there and stared at Alaric who was smiling widely, standing not too far from you in a tuxedo, with a bouquet of beautiful flowers in one hand and a freaking cup of tea in the other. You laughed, but your voice cracked and your eyes started to water. It took you too much time to even get your feet moving again, but when they finally obeyed you, you ran over to Alaric and hugged him, though made sure the hot tea didn't spill all over you two like it did two years ago.

"What is this?", you mumbled against his shoulder as you tightly hugged the slightly taller man, leaving your tears on his tux as you pulled away. Alaric handed you the tea, and the flowers, and you took both gladly. You drew a long sip from the warm tea, and waited for his answer, but he didn't have time to say anything when you saw a tear fall on his cheek and you took the chance to speak.

"No, wait, why are you crying? Baby? Is this the world's best way to break-up with someone? Are you leaving me?", you started to get suspicious, assuming the worst, when in reality, it was the best. Alaric laughed, and shook his head, assuring that he had no intentions to leave you.

"Of course not", he said, and used his thumb to wipe away your tears while you did the same for him. "This is me doing what I should have done long ago", he continued, and cleared his throat as he got down on one knee, making you drop your tea as you understood what he was doing. You placed the flowers down on the ground so you could press your palm against your mouth, gasping for breath as tears filled your eyes. Alaric was on the verge of crying as well, although he didn't cry too often, but for you he would have cried a river.

"Ric", you spoke, in a warning tone, as if to make sure he wasn't messing with you. He chuckled, and looked down as he took a deep breath and aimed to put himself together, while one of his hands dug through his pocket only to come out with a small velvet box resting on his palm. He opened the box, and your eyes met a shiny engagement ring, causing your stomach to drop and your heart to go along.

Your make-up was ruined by the tears by now. The wind had messed your hair, and Ric's too, but he didn't care - neither did you. After playing with your hair, the wind moved to your sundress, and you had to press it down with your trembling hands while your red eyes looked at Alaric who was shaking and crying as well. His hands held the box up, and your eyes competed with the ring, which was brighter?

You couldn't believe he was doing this. He bought you tea and flowers. He brought you to the spot where you met for the first time. And he was wearing a damn tuxedo and looking fine as all hell. You were both crying, and to anyone else, it would have looked really awkward and anything but romantic, but to you, it was perfect. It was how you had imagined Alaric doing this, since the moment you first saw him, you had been dreaming of this. And now it was true, and just how you wanted it.

"Y/N", Alaric took a deep breath, his voice cracking sadly already, "I love you, so goddamn much." You wiped your eyes, only for more tears to come, and as you understood that it was hopeless for you to even try to stop them, you just let them flood out and cover your cheeks. "I love you more than words can describe, and I don't know how to even begin to explain how much you mean to me, but I do know, that you are my best friend, my girlfriend, my soulmate, the one, and I would really want to add wife to that list", Alaric continued, breaking your heart with one word, only to mend it with the next. His voice was weak, about to fall apart and you knew that yours would be the same if you tried to speak. But not even that, nor the weather, or the tea on the bottom of your shoes, could bring you down. It was perfect, even with all the flaws.

"So, Y/N Y/L/N, will you marry me?", Alaric asked the big question, and he had barely gotten the last word out when you nodded your head and began to obsessively repeat the word yes. You put out your hand, and with a big smile on his face, Alaric took the ring from the box which he pushed in his pocket, before slipping it on your finger happily. You squealed, and as soon as Alaric had stood up, you wrapped your arms around his neck and pressed your body against his tightly.

You had never cried so much, neither had Alaric. As he wrapped one arm around your waist, and tilted you slightly down while cupping your cheek with one of his hands to give you an epic, intense kiss, your tears mixed together. Your lips were salty, and ached for more, so you grabbed him tightly and hungrily, hotly, deepened the kiss. It was hands down one of the most legendary kisses in your relationship, one you'd look back at when you'd be old and tired. Yet still together, as always.

"I love you so much, Y/N", Alaric whispered, not ashamed of his vulnerable state. "So much", he added, and pressed his forehead against yours before placing one more kiss to your lips. You cupped his cheeks, and wiped his tears away, although you knew they wouldn't stop streaming down on his face, but nonetheless, you hated to see him cry. Even if they were happy tears.

"I love you too", you replied with a smile on your face. You pressed a soft kiss on his cheek, feeling his stubble underneath your lips, while your fingers intertwined and you felt safe and at home right next to him. You looked at the ring on your finger proudly, and smiled while moving to Alaric's side and resting your head on his shoulder, while the both of you sighed happily. You took the flowers from the ground, and started to walk home, where you'd properly celebrate the engagement, after calling Damon of course.

So, you were one step closer to becoming Y/N Saltzman.
