Imagine Kai choosing power over you but he doesn't go through with it and comes back to you instead

The silence in the house you shared with your boyfriend had been lasting for longer than you could remember, and for an equally long time, you had been sitting on the floor, tears falling from your eyes which were staring at your trembling hands, though glanced at the front door once in a while, as if expecting your boyfriend to return.

You and him barely fought, but with Kai Parker being the psychotic killer and the villain you weren't supposed to get involved with, it was inevitable that things would fall apart right at your fingertips, eventually. You just didn't expect it to be after two months of dating.

Things were going so well for you and Kai, you couldn't suspect a storm coming. You and him had found happiness, though you knew who you were falling for - the infamous Parker boy who had recently escaped a prison world, where he was put for a reason, but it was love at first sight, for the both of you. One look was all it took to send you on a collision course you couldn't step out of. You fell hard and fast, and in no time he was already at your front door, wanting to take you out and one thing led to another. One night led to another, and so you became a couple.

You found no good reason to say no to him, except for the fact that he was mildly insane but you preferred your men a bit crazy anyway, that had been confirmed after you dated Klaus for a brief moment, harbored feelings of some sort for Kol and got somewhat fond of Katherine. Or maybe it was just people with names that started with a K.

Whatever the reason behind your undeniable feelings was, Kai shared them, and that was all you needed to know. Although you did not want him to kill all of your friends, but in his company, you started to drift apart from them, but at the same time, in your company, Kai became a tad less crazy. For you, he tried to be the best man he could, and he succeeded quite well, too. But the point was, he made you truly happy, and you couldn't get enough of each other. You were in love, and in a great relationship and that was it.

But it blew up in your face. You knew what kind of a man Kai was, but maybe you neglected it too much. You knew he was hungry for power, seeking for kingship as Klaus had as well, which led into him leaving you to go to New Orleans, and now, Kai was slipping from your fingertips in a similar way. He was all about power and victory, and when the chance came to merge with his twin to get even more power, he obviously took it.

Even though you thought he wouldn't.

"I'm going to do it", Kai started, walking inside the house in his black trench coat, hands deep in the pockets and a satisfied, proud smile on his kissable lips. You had been reading on the couch for the past hour, and only now your concentration broke, and you turned to look at your boyfriend with your eyebrows knitted together in confusion. You put your book down, and hoisted your body from the couch to walk over to Kai who shut the front door and then turned back to you with the wide grin still pulling up his lips and revealing his pearl white teeth.

"Do what?", you asked sternly, worried that he was going to do something incredibly stupid and reckless that would lead into nothing but heartbreak and 'I told you so's. Kai took his hands out of his pockets, but didn't bother to take off his coat which meant he was planning on leaving the house again, after already being away for hours. The day had went and the night had arrived, it was dim and cold outside and you didn't want him to go but the way he didn't leave the door, or do anything to signify a stay, strongly suggested he was going to.

Kai's large hands grabbed yours and you shivered when his cold skin touched yours, but you had no intentions to pull away, instead you let him close your hands in his own ones and draw you closer. The smile on his lips seemed rather genuine, and it both terrified and delighted you - you loved to see your boyfriend be so cheerful, but there was only a few things that made him this happy, and that was where the fear came in. You looked in his eyes, your warm gaze making him chuckle fondly as he held you close to him, excited to share the news with you.

"Merge", was all he had to say to kill the faint smile on your lips and to break your heart entirely. "I'm going to merge", Kai added, and neglected to check your dropping expression as he wrapped his arms around you and hugged you tightly. You could tell this was what he wanted, but you had lived in the belief that he wouldn't go through with it, that for you, he'd stop trying to be the best. Turned out, you were wrong to think that way. Because Kai would never stop reaching out for more and more power.

Kai's happy laughter reached your ears as he hugged you tightly, and although you wanted to be happy for him, you couldn't. You were positive he was strong enough to beat whoever he was planning on merging with, but the amount of what ifs was just too big for you to bear and you hated the thought of him going out there and either dying or killing someone else. So, you showed him your disagreement by pushing him off of you and taking a step back so he could see your displeased expression. Kai frowned at your features, twisted by sadness and distress, and he reached out with his hand, aiming to bring you comfort. You dodged, though, and his hand didn't fall on your cheek like he wanted it to.

"I thought you weren't going to do it. I thought you were done with trying to be the best bad guy", you whispered, your voice disobeying you and coming out weak and on the verge of breaking. Each word was a struggle, and you dropped your gaze, looking down at the floor while swallowing thickly and crossing your arms. You didn't want to fight, but it seemed somewhat inevitable, especially when it was about something as big as this.

"Well, yeah, but take under consideration, how happy we could be if I was even stronger than now. We could be safe, and no one would ever threaten us", Kai smiled enthusiastically, trying to get you to see the situation in a different light but you stood behind your opinion and shook your head. You were afraid of the outcome, and you didn't want to take the risk and see how things would turn out. Why would you, when things were so good now?

"Or I'll lose you", you spoke quietly, and looked back up at him as tears rose in your eyes and slipped down to your cheeks. Kai opened his mouth, his heart breaking at the sight of you crying right in front of him, but only a low chuckle came out as he shook his head.

"You and me both know I'm strong enough to take the victory", Kai stated, only for you to shake your head now.

"That's not what I meant", you breathed out, and looked back down, knowing that looking at Kai would only make you cry more. Silence took over, and the both of you stood there, thinking about how you once told him about your relationship with Klaus and how it ended with him leaving you to rule New Orleans. He chose power over you, even after he promised he wouldn't, he broke your heart and your trust and it took you years to get over it. But then Kai showed up, and you fell in love again, only to be in the same situation you were with Klaus once upon a time.

"I can't do this again. So if even a tiny part of you wants to leave me, do it now. Don't leave me hanging. I don't want to live in fear, Kai. I want to live knowing you love me as much as I love you. But you can't have it all", you explained, and took a step closer to Kai, facing him bravely which was a big step from you and the both of you knew it. You didn't want to do this, but you had to, because you didn't want to be scared or worried. You wanted to have answers and the truth, even if it would be painful, but you couldn't live knowing your boyfriend would rather rule and kill than kiss you.

Kai looked at you in disbelief, and his tone matched, "Are you making me choose?", as his eyes stared down at you. You swallowed loudly, and avoided his eyes for a moment, but then a rush of confidence kicked in and you answered to the eye contact and rapidly nodded your head as a response. Kai let out a low breath at a loss of words, and his happiness was long gone, so was yours. The perfect relationship had vanished and somehow you ended in a situation you had lived before, but this time, you were in control and you handled it better. Klaus had broken your heart, but you didn't give Kai the chance to surprise you with a break-up.

"Yes", you finally spoke. "I hate having to do this, but I need to know. It's either me or merging. Me or power", you continued, feeling the heartbreak but you'd pull through somehow. You already knew the answer, but you needed to hear Kai say it, so you pushed him, encouraged him and looked him in the eyes, ready, but at the same time, anything but ready to hear his answer.

The silence lasted for a few minutes only, but it felt like the longest moment you had ever experienced. It was quiet, only the sound of your sniffling could be heard and the tears raced against each other on your numb cheeks, running towards your trembling lower lip. Kai looked sorrowful, and he was about to cry as well, and that alone was enough for you to know which one he would pick.

"I'm sorry, Y/N. I love you, but I'm not made for the white picket fence life. I need to do this", Kai replied eventually, confirming your suspicions. You closed your eyes, and more tears fell out, as Kai placed his hands on your cheeks and pulled you closer for one last kiss. His lips captivated yours, and you could taste salty tears as he kissed you deeply, fondly, not wanting let go but it was in his nature to crave for power. He longed to feel it rush through his veins, he wanted to be superior, and just like he said, he wasn't made for the life you wanted. He was barely capable of feelings to begin with, and it was a wonder how he found himself falling for you but it wasn't strong enough, apparently.

"I'm sorry", he repeated when your lips had parted. You didn't open your eyes, because you didn't want to see him leave which he did after dropping his hands from your cheeks. After a few steps, he opened the front door again, and as soon as he had walked out and shut it, you were alone, and sobs broke free. You cried violently, wanting to release every tear and feel the heartache instead of bottling it up, and the pain of losing Kai like you lost Klaus, overwhelmed you to a point where you dropped onto your knees and cried on the floor.

You knew what Kai was like. It didn't surprise you that he chose power over you, but you had hoped for the other option nonetheless. You had blindly fallen in love with the wrong man again, and it led to this same situation as it did with your previous boyfriend. You hated yourself for being so stupid, and you drowned not only in your tears, but self-loathing and you didn't know how to stop. Your thoughts were a mess, and your head and heart both felt like exploding, failing on you. You and Kai had been so happy, but you should have known better. You should have known, that eventually he'd walk out and you'd have to go through this again.

After a fair while, you found the strength to push yourself up and drag yourself in the bedroom. Seeing the bed as a more proper place to cry yourself to sleep, you left the floor and crashed down onto the mattress, crawling underneath the covers and sobbing against the pillow. You were breathless, and your body ached from all over, and you just wanted to sleep it all away but you couldn't. All you could do, was think about Kai, and cry more, more, and more.

For at least an hour, you cried. The silence was broken by only your sobs, nothing else, and you felt so lonely and stupid and terrible. You were slowly becoming an expert on heartache, really. The tears didn't seem to have an end, and they caused your hair to stick to your face, and you felt and looked like a mess. And only one thing could make you feel better, and that would be Kai returning to you, kissing you and telling you he loved you too much to let go. Your wild imagination ran like never before, and the comforting dreams of a happy life with Kai allowed you to stop crying and close your eyes, sending you on the way to a peaceful slumber. But before you could fall asleep, your name was called out and you returned to the miserable reality.

But it wouldn't be so miserable for much longer.

"Y/N", you heard a voice speak, a voice you thought you'd never hear again but you did and it made you lift your head in shock. You wiped your eyes and cheeks and sat up on the bed, staring at the man at the doorway, and instinctively, you brought your hand up to your mouth and pressed your palm against your lips. You couldn't believe what you were seeing, but it was definitely true - Kai came back for you.

You scrambled off of the bed, and as soon as your feet were against the floor you sprinted over to Kai and he grabbed you when you jumped. You wrapped your legs around his waist, and your arms went over his shoulders as you hugged him, and he embraced you just as softly. He smiled widely, and you wanted to do the same but you couldn't through all the tears of joy. You had been so sure, so positive that you lost him, but he was there now and it made you laugh eventually. Although it was anything but amusing, you still giggled, and only stopped when his lips met yours.

"You came back", you whispered when the kiss broke, and your tone was quite confused and it made Kai chuckle. He nodded his head, and you ran your fingers through his dark hair while you gazed into each other's eyes happily. His smile matched yours, but he suffocated them by pressing his lips onto yours again for another sweet kiss. Soon enough your lips disconnected again, and he could speak, give you the answers you needed even though you didn't admit it.

"I was about to go through the merging, and I know I would have won, but I--I realized that I'd rather be here with you. Sure, I like being powerful, but if it means I have to live without you, it's not worth it", Kai sighed, and moved your messy hair away from your face. "I love you, Y/N, and it's an odd thing for me to feel, but if there's someone I'd do all this for, it's you. I love you, more than power, and it feels weird to admit it, but I can't lose you", he continued, confessing his feelings to you, more than he ever did and it made you cry as if you hadn't wept enough already. You nodded your head, happy to hear each word - happy to know that you were the person who made Kai want to be a better man. The person that made Kai stop destroying lives just so he could have a happy one with you.

"I love you too", you responded, and kissed him one more time, enjoying the taste of his lips. Kai's arms wrapped around you even tighter, and he started to stumble towards the bed where he set you down before climbing right on top of you. Your hands cupped Kai's cheeks, and his found your hips while your lips continued to move against each other so perfectly.

You knew it would be a long road for Kai to actually become that better man he aimed to be for you, but all that mattered to you was that he wasn't like Klaus. He came back for you, he chose you over power, and you were happy together. He was the right guy for you, the one, and he loved you with his whole heart.

And he never stopped reminding you about it.
