Imagine turning off your emotions and Klaus makes you flip them back on ++ Imagine killing a lot of people and afterwards Klaus comforts you
Klaus Mikaelson was always there for you. That was the base on which a strong, beautiful relationship was built, though it took you too much time to even see how much you meant to him, and even more to realize how much he meant to you. Since day one, when you first bumped into him in New Orleans - 99% on purpose - he had been thinking about you, considering you as the most beautiful woman ever, one he aspired to spend his eternal life with.
Because you thought he was handsome as the devil, ironically, you made sure it wasn't the last time you'd see him and he met you halfway, because he had fallen in love. You had too, but you didn't understand it yet, though you did spend a lot of time with him.
You ended up becoming quite close. Best friends, even, and you shared a special bond that everyone grew aware of. He was always taking care of you, he supported your opinions and choices, and he never got angry with you. You were his precious Y/N, even after you turned into a vampire after an unfortunate accident, but instead of letting you go, he taught you the magic of vampirism and you grew into someone very mature, reasonable, yet unbelievably attractive with your new set of fangs.
Klaus was always there for you, as has been said. He made you feel beautiful when you needed it the most. He gave you the warmest hugs ever. He gave you the life you had been dreaming of since you first bumped into him, and you got along with his family as well. It was all like from a movie, including the love you blindly ignored, struggled to see although you too shared the same feelings he had for you. It was heartbreaking, how he was so incredibly in love, but he was so scared of pushing you away that he didn't speak of his feelings toward you. But if only he had, then you would have seen him in a different light, but in a better one. And you would have realized that you were totally in love with him, and now, you were just claiming it was the friendship between you and him.
The point wasn't his unspoken feelings, though. The point was, he always had your back. He was your rock on which you could lean without the fear of losing him. He was there through thick and thin, he remained as a constant and he always would. He was always there for you. The friendship was unbreakable, admirable, something most people dreamed to have and you had it.
So, of course, he was there when you were resting on your knees, sobbing on the hard ground, surrounded by the cold air that pinched your sweaty, bloody skin while your arms cradled a person you couldn't recognize yet had mercilessly slaughtered to satisfy your own selfish desires. You had killed people too many to even count, and the bodies were surrounding your shaky body on the dark ground, in the middle of the woods where no one or nothing could see or hear your sobs or witness the deaths you caused. Except Klaus. Because Klaus was always there.
"How did I become this person?", was all you managed to say, choking on tears that covered your cheeks, shut your throat and blinded your eyes.
It was a good question, but the answer couldn't be held as equal.

Things started to go downhill for you after the death of Kol Mikaelson. He had visited you in New Orleans, but most of his priorities resided in Mystic Falls which was where the other Mikaelsons had spent much of their time as well, and that was where he got torched. Drowned in the flames, stabbed in the heart with a white oak stake, Kol Mikaelson was gone and you weren't sure how to cope with it. Soon, all of the Mikaelsons had fled Mystic Falls and followed each other to New Orleans where you were reunited, and you were happy to be on the arms of your best friend again.
Though, misery had found its way into the family and it was there to stay. Hayley Marshall was carrying Klaus' child, and that was the first alarming sign to you - you felt jealous, but didn't speak of it. Either way, it was stressful, and so was knowing that Elijah had been daggered and behind enemy lines. Things were going terribly, and it seemed like Klaus was going to lose the war he had going on with Marcel Gerard, and out of all the people, you were the one who broke under the pressure.
You couldn't handle any of it. You couldn't handle the heartbreak and living right in the middle of the war in New Orleans, so you did what no vampire should do, yet many did anyway - you turned off your emotions. So there was indeed an answer to your question, which you'd find yourself asking afterwards, but it wasn't good. Because no one should ever shut it off, for several reasons, but there you were now, cold and careless.
It was a stupid thing to do, but it gave you the relief you needed and you found yourself enjoying each day more, only for it to all crash down in the end. It was a road to a destination you couldn't avoid, because sooner or later, you'd have to turn everything back on, whether you'd be forced to it or not, and whenever you'd finally do it, your heart would break all over again. It would be a nightmare, though one very real and impossible to escape, and you'd just have to manage.
But the time before, was quite fun.
You were a vampire in New Orleans, and this was the first time you really took the fun out of it. Shedding blood and getting drunk just the right amount was what you went for, and god, how you loved it. You played with hearts, quite literally even, after luring a guy into the back of an alley and drinking him dry from every drop of blood. All that you left behind was bodies with empty veins, an unbeating heart that sometimes resided on the street and dead eyes staring at the starry night sky, and all you had to do was fix your lipstick before going in for another kill.
Klaus and Elijah started to work together once the noble brother returned from Marcel's fingertips, and they started to track you. You didn't leave New Orleans once, because although you could have travelled around the world and left your friends behind, you loved the city more than any other and therefore you decided to bravely stay in the familiar streets and be the woman behind the mysterious murders, a name only the Mikaelsons knew.
You loved it. When you first became a vampire, Klaus took you under his wing instantly, and at the time you appreciated it, because he was your best friend. He welcomed you to the world of vampirism, he made you feel safe yet capable of protecting yourself, but without being irresponsible. He taught you how to not get yourself killed. But, that meant, you never got to experience the wild, crazy side, and now, you were like a child who got to explore the world with brand new eyes. You could do what you wanted to, and no one could hold you back or stop you. You didn't care about anyone, or anything besides blood, and boy, it was great. Each day was legendary, worth living, and you never wanted to return to your old life.
And because of this attitude, you managed to keep this new life up for weeks, months even. Which only meant that once you'd flip the switch again, and turn your emotions back on, it would be hellish, but even then, Klaus would be right there with and for you every step of the way. He was prepared for everything, and determined to get you back. Yet he left you alone, and didn't approach you, not once, until the big attack which he hoped to affect you so deeply you'd come back to him.
He wasn't wrong. He knew how you'd go, he was after all your best friend and in love with you, so he was entirely aware of your preferred ways. You started out slow, but you ended up so cocky and arrogant that you'd find yourself right in the middle of a fucking carnage, and that Klaus aimed to be the moment he'd find you, come to you, and force you to watch and see what you had done. And then, hopefully, you'd turn your feelings back on.

A feeling of undeniable pride spread out in your chest, and a smile of victory tugged up your red lips as you looked around, seeing a pile of bodies surrounding you. Foolishly, they had tried to attack you, as if they'd stand a single chance against you, and obviously you couldn't say no to dinner when it was running right toward you, so you ate them all until all that was left was these cold bloody corpses covering the hard ground. You just didn't know, that all of these people were compelled by Klaus, forced to come to you and all of this, even the smugness painted on your features, was part of his genius plan which was officially ongoing and surprisingly effective even if you didn't know it yet.
You breathed out, feeling the need to catch your breath from running away as your lips wrapped around your thumb to make sure no blood was wasted. You smirked, and straightened your leather jacket before taking a step away, ready to leave the woods but you didn't have time to do so, when your name was called out and you turned around quickly to see who dared to approach you.
Your smile died down when you saw Klaus, only for it to arrive again, because of the disappointed, sad look contorting Klaus' flawless features. He was quite beautiful, you had always thought so, but it wasn't enough to get to you, so you shrugged and got ready to leave, but he mentioned your name again and you froze, sighing heavily.
"Nik. I can't say I've missed you", you sarcastically spoke, and turned back to Klaus, crossing your arms while looking at him with a tired look. Klaus chuckled fondly, and held his hands behind his back while glancing around, taking in the sight of the multiple deaths you had caused. His eyes slowly rose from the bodies to you, and his smirk vanished as he allowed himself to see the situation like he was supposed to, and the realization of you being this monster, it made him want to cry which he never did. You had such light in you, yet the darkness had consumed it all.
"You know, love, it's funny how often a person's sharp tongue can end up cutting their own throat. Have you been to Mystic Falls? It appears you have collected a habit or two from a certain Salvatore", Klaus said, smiling softly, though it was mostly fake because none of this was even remotely amusing or positive in any way. His words caused you to knit your eyebrows together, as you had never been to Mystic Falls, nor met any Salvatores, and your expression made Klaus chuckle, because he knew you hadn't visited the small town.
"No, I have not. Though, maybe I'll go there next, and kill them all for killing Kol", you spoke and flashed a grin, ready to leave once again but you grew interested in how Klaus dropped his hands along with his smile and let his attitude change in a blink of an eye. He no longer seemed to carry interest towards witty remarks or fooling around - he was there for one thing and one thing only, that being you back on his arms and he aimed to achieve this goal, although at the moment it seemed to be quite far from his fingertips.
"Is Kol's death where it all began, love? Is Kol's death what led into this? Look around, Y/N! You have gone too far, my dear, don't you see?", Klaus attempted to bring you to a sense of rationality, but it was a far cry. Though, by the time he'd be done, he'd find himself carrying you to home. "Come home with me, love. Turn it back on", Klaus added sadly, hating how he had to see you be so evil. Sure, he had killed lots of people and he was the wonderfully feared Original Hybrid, but you weren't made for this life. This wasn't you. Besides, Klaus killed people for a reason, whilst you were just doing it for fun.
"Don't say that to me. I will not. I'm having fun, Nik, why don't you join me?", you suggested, and took a step closer to Klaus, but he only recreated the distance by taking a step back. You tilted your head to the side in confusion, and looked at him while tears rose in his eyes and he looked at you, shaking his head and holding a finger up to show you his disagreement.
"This is not my best friend. This is not my Y/N. Not the girl I fell in love with", Niklaus spoke, his voice cracking as he revealed his true feelings toward you. You froze, and your expression changed entirely as you swallowed and realized that he had feelings for you, and you used to feel the same way, but then you turned them off.
"You love me?", you whispered, suddenly starting to feel things that you had avoided for so long.
"Not this monster, this murderer. I love Y/N, the foolish silly girl who bumped into me, on purpose, I believe", Klaus chuckled at the memory of how you first met, "I love the girl who makes me smile no matter what. The girl who gets drunk with me and dances on the table. The girl who steal my shirts, because they smell like me. The girl who always compliments my paintings and takes me away from all the drama for once. The girl who makes me feel human and who makes me want to be a better person. The girl, who would do anything for me, and for whom I would do anything" - at this point you were already crying, because you recognized yourself from what he was describing. And it was breaking your heart, because you had been such a fool to do this, not only to yourself but to your best friend, who also turned out to be the love of your life.
"I'm in love with Y/N Y/L/N, who talks in her sleep, sings terribly yet somehow so beautifully, yells at books, cries over fictional characters and gives the best hugs", Klaus pushed, making the both of you cry as he made sure that by now, your feelings were back. Saying all those things, it didn't just break your heart, but his, because he was afraid that he was still the only one out of the two of you who felt this way. He was so in love, and he was willing to confess it all to you to get you back, but at the same time he took the risk of losing you entirely.
You fell to your knees, and sobs broke free while you took in shaky breaths only to let them out seconds later, leaving you panting on the ground while crying your eyes out. You were in pain - it was absolutely awful to feel it all coming back to you, but at least Klaus made it happen, and that was what mattered.
Your hair fell to your face, and your bloodstained hands rested on the ground from where you picked up a random dead body, pulling it onto your arms, not wanting to believe you had done this. The body was ruined, slaughtered shamelessly and it was your work. This was a life you took, leaving only the cold dead body on your arms and the empty eyes that stared into yours so scarily.
"Look around, Y/N. You did this. This is your fault. You killed all these people", Klaus said, wanting you to feel, although he hated himself for causing this much pain to you. He looked away himself, not wanting to see you cry so much, but once he was convinced it was really you, he ran over to you. But still, he stood there, crying as his eyes slowly returned to you, witnessing the sight of you in all the heartache you had tried to avoid but couldn't.
"How did I become this person?"
In that moment, Klaus knew it was you, truly, so he ran to you and went to his knees before throwing the body on your arms away. He placed his hands on your cheeks, and he quickly placed his lips on yours, giving you a warm kiss, but then his hands slid to your back and he closed you in a comforting embrace after pulling you to his lap. You felt like you couldn't breathe, and you wanted to die, and Klaus knew this so he held you tightly, kissing the top of your head, never leaving your side.
"I love you, darling. Focus on one feeling, it'll be easier that way. It will all be well, I promise, everything is okay", Klaus repeated, wanting you to know he'd make all the sadness go away eventually. You couldn't stop sobbing, so you clung onto his shirt and wept against his shoulder while his jaw rested on the top of your head and his strong arms closed you against him. One of his hands caressed your hair, and the other rested on your back, and he tried his best to make you feel warm and safe with him.
You did as he told you - you focused on one feeling, and that was love. Love, which you felt towards him. Finally, you could see how much in love you were, and how he was too. Maybe this wasn't the situation where he wished to confess his feelings, but at least he got to you, and made you turn your emotions back on. And all the feelings, they were almost too much for you to handle, but after taking his advice and focusing on one of them, you finally stopped crying. Relief washed over him, while all you concentrated on was your fondness towards Klaus.
"Nik, I love you too", you whispered, making him smile as he got up from the ground and took you on his arms. You closed your eyes, and he adored your beauty for a second, happy to know his feelings matched with yours, before flashing away from the woods and taking you home.
After undressing you from your bloody clothes, putting you to bed, wrapping the warm covers around you and joining you, he made sure you'd never turn your emotions off again, and it was quite easy for you to promise you wouldn't. It had been fun, but afterwards, not so much.
But, something good came out of it too, because now, you were sleeping on Klaus' arms, your warm back against his naked chest, and the feeling of a soft kiss and the taste of Klaus' lips still lingering on yours.
