Imagine planning on proposing to Caroline, only to find out she's way ahead of you and proposes to you on the day you were supposed to do so
A heavy sigh dropped from your mouth, and your eyes were glued to the small velvet box you were holding in your hands. You took in a shaky inhale, and your chapped lips stretched out painfully as you broke into a genuinely happy smile, and you had to bring a hand to your mouth like you were used to do whenever tears started to stream down on your cheeks. Your eyes sparkled under the coat of tears, and it turned into an intense battle - which shined brighter, your eyes or the ring you were looking at?
Your hand went from your mouth to hide eager strands of hair behind your ear, and the smile continued to shine on your red lips. After waiting and wondering and thinking for months, you decided to take the next big step in your and Caroline Forbes' relationship. For the past two years, you had been dating, and it was amazing, just like how you expected love to be. Sure, you had your ups and downs like every healthy couple, but you were also a couple that seemed too good to be true, one that everyone envied and aspired to be like. She was the best girlfriend ever, and surely she felt the same way about you.
But, even though things were absolutely perfect between you and her, she just would not propose. You had started to think something was wrong, only to realize that it was an absurd thought, so you had decided to take matters into your own hands. Though, you wouldn't even expect her to be the one to do the proposing, if it wasn't for a conversation you had some months ago during the funfair in Mystic Falls.
It was you and Caroline, eating cotton candy after winning a giant teddy bear together, when she took your hand and led you towards the ferris wheel. You ran there, and you set the teddy bear down and told the guard to make sure no one would steal your prize before you climbed in and got to enjoy the magical views. It was late, and the sky was dark and covered in stars and you ended up adoring them while Caroline adored you. She loved the excited glistening in your eyes and your happy smile as you looked up at the dark blue canvas and admired the infinite beauty. She loved everything about you, and her heart felt like it was about to burst out of her chest whenever she just looked at you.
Then she did the most cliché thing ever, but you kind of gave her the possibility so perhaps it was 50% your fault and 50% hers - which only made the two of you the perfect couple. Both just as cheesy and despite the disagreeing laughters, you both loved it nonetheless.
"Man, the stars are really beautiful tonight", you sighed adoringly while staring at the night sky with a joyful smile on your lips. The ferris wheel continued to move slowly, bringing you closer and closer to the top which was a place you both feared and wanted to experience. Neither of you hadn't been on one of these in a long time, so it was like the first time all over again.
Caroline chuckled, "You know what else is?", earning your attention with her fond tone. You turned to look at the blondie, and a wide smile lifted her kissable lips as she mouthed you, causing you to groan as if you hated the cheesy line. But while you giggled together, and ended up kissing softly, you both knew that you, and her, loved it. You loved all these yucky lovey dovey moments as Damon liked to call them, and sometimes you seriously acted like you were from a chick flick but with Caroline, it was so flawless.
Really, no matter how tough a girl was, they'd still like those gestures of affection, all the attention and how their loved one made them feel like the most amazing person in the world. And you were like that, both of you.
The ferris wheel moved until you were at the top, and for a moment it stopped like always. Under the stars, you grabbed Caroline's hand and your fingers intertwined while you rested your heads together and smiled. It was quiet, and peaceful, and the wind was tugging on your hair while the refreshing air made you feel awake, yet the moon and the stars made you feel so relaxed and sleepy. The only sounds you could hear was the music playing down below, and each other's somehow comforting breathing while you just simply enjoyed the presence the other could offer.
"This would be the perfect place to propose", you blurted out, not thinking about your words, just letting them out in the air. They lingered in the silence which took over you both, and you squeezed your eyes shut when the awkwardness kicked in - obviously you had just meant to make a statement but it came out as a very evident suggestion, as if you had tried to be sneaky but totally failed. Caroline broke the silence with an awkward laughter, but then cleared her throat and squeezed your hand as she spoke up.
"Well, I don't have a ring with me right now", she giggled and nudged you gently, making you grimace at the awkwardness you had caused. "And this carnival won't be back for another year or something, so that would just be too far away. But I promise, Y/N, one day I will ask you to marry me and you better say yes", Caroline continued, shocking you with her response and you turned to look at her with wide eyes. Eventually, you smiled though, and she did the same as your lips met once again.
And that promise, you still remembered.
Yet she wouldn't do it. You had waited patiently for months, but she just wouldn't get to it, and at first it scared you but then you took control and bought a ring you aimed to give her. If she wasn't going to propose, then you would. Today.
Although you were confident, you were also nervous. What if she would say no? There were so many possibilities, and you hated that there was even the slightest chance she'd turn you down but you were sure she wouldn't, so you could smile easily as you looked at the shiny ring you had bought two days ago.
But if only you had waited for a few more days.
"Here you are! I looked all over the house", you heard your girlfriend speak, so you quickly shut the box and pushed it in your pocket before wiping your eyes and getting up from the edge of the bed. You smiled at Caroline, whose mouth hung open, while her features twisted into a worried look - she had seen your tears despite your attempts to dry your eyes. She approached you, and sneaked her arms around your waist while giving you her best look of compassion, though she was not quite sure what it was for.
"Is everything okay?", she had to ask, and you nodded to confirm that everything was indeed wonderful. She seemed suspicious, you could tell from the stern look on her face and the way her eyebrow lifted slightly, but instead of pushing the matter, she let it go and with a shrug unhooked her arms from around you to clasp her hands together excitedly. A bright smile arrived to Caroline's lips, and it was contagious, causing you to mirror the expression as you listened to her speak.
"Good! Because I have exciting news. Or, it's a question, actually", Caroline spoke, and fiddled with her fingers nervously. You tilted your head, you were able to tell that she was actually very nervous, and the reason was still unknown and itched your thoughts irritatingly. You didn't want your girlfriend to look so distressed, but the happy smile on her lips seemed rather sincere so you smiled back at her and believed that all would be well in the end.
Then she did it. Caroline went down on one knee, and she gave you a meaningful look, causing you to breathe in deeply when you realized what was going on. "No way", you let out, and her smile seemed smug when she nodded, confirming your suspicions. Your heart, if you would have been alive, would have left out a beat at this point, and your knees started to go weak while you covered your mouth with your hands and jumped up and down in excitement.
Caroline pulled out a small box, and she opened it, revealing a beautiful diamond ring which made you gasp. "Calm down, sweetie", Caroline said, and smiled widely while taking your hand, "Y/N, I promised that one day I would propose to you. And that's today. I love you, with all my heart and you know I do, and I'm sorry it took me this long but here I'm now, on one knee, and honestly I'm just winging this and hoping it ends well. You promised to say yes, I guess, so maybe I'll just skip all the speeches and put my love into words afterwards, and now, I'll just pop the question-- Y/N Y/L/N, will you marry me?"
It was real. And you couldn't hold back a squeal as you nodded and repeated one single word a million times. Caroline felt just as happy as you did, and you both started to shed salty tears of joy as she slipped the shiny ring on your finger. As soon as it was on, you went on your knees and hugged Caroline so tightly she collapsed and fell onto her back, pulling you on top of her. You stared into each other's eyes, and she kissed your lips softly, causing you both to taste tears you shared.
"I love you", Caroline breathed out against your mouth while her hand caressed your cheek, feeling the tears and the soft skin.
"I love you too", you whispered and kissed her again while remaining on top of her. Her hands went to your back, and yours cupped her cheeks, and you stayed on the spot for a good while until you finally sat up and pulled her with you.
"I have a confession", you started and pulled the box out of your pocket, "I was going to propose tonight", with a bright smile you revealed the truth which made Caroline laugh out loud with a surprised look on her face. You opened the velvet box, and took the engagement ring before slipping it on Caroline's finger slowly, taking in the sight and making sure you'd remember it even after centuries. You looked up at her and into her eyes, and the intense gazing led into yet another fond kiss shared on the floor.
And all you both said to each other was, "You're going to be the best wife ever."
