Imagine being the first vampire turned by Klaus, and being in love with him, and after he's spent centuries thinking you were killed by hunters, you find each other in New Orleans and he thinks you're just an illusion created by his mother to mess with his head
"I can't sleep because of her."
"I thought vampires don't sleep at all."
Klaus Mikaelson lifted an eyebrow while chuckling in sole fake amusement, and gave his therapist a look of plea, as if to ask her to stop with the not-so-good jokes. Klaus rubbed his stubbled jaw and shrugged slightly, before shooting a charming grin at the blonde sitting opposite him, on the other couch while the Mikaelson had taken up the other with a bottle of bourbon he was chugging down with an impressive speed.
"I'm a hybrid, love", Klaus pointed cockily, and earned a low chuckle. "Even if I could not sleep, I still spend my nights sweating and thinking about her and the way she died. I never got to witness it, I never got to hold her in my arms... And if I happen to fall asleep by some miracle, I see nightmares of her and they end up waking me up, and then I spend the rest of the night awake, thinking about her", he continued, and turned more sad. His grin faded and his thoughts wandered from the present to the past - specifically to the days when he lost the only woman he ever truly loved, you.
The woman opposite him clicked her pen and put the notebook away, not bothering to write anything down. They were more than just a therapist and a patient who compelled it all away until they'd meet again. They were friends, and that was why she felt confident with putting the notes away and leaning closer to Klaus. With a careful smile, she parted her lips and spoke the few words that had turned out fatal previously, but Klaus was feeling like he needed the unloading so instead of attacking her and choking her to death, he clenched his jaw and prepared for the story he hated remembering.
"Tell me about her."

It was 1114 in Italy, the Mikaelsons had found a home and safe surroundings to live in. Elijah seemed happy, and Rebekah found love, and for once she wasn't the only one. On their second day, Niklaus met Y/N Y/L/N, you, the sweet girl with the prettiest smile he had ever seen and a golden heart which was the complete opposite to the venomous dead heart Klaus hid inside but that was what made you perfect for each other. You were so innocent and young, but still you had that sarcastic, funny and reckless side, while Klaus was just bad news and managed to lure that dark side out of you.
It was love at first sight, though you only had your first kiss a few weeks later at a bonfire. Everyone else had left, and it was just you and Klaus by the fire, listening to the crackles and enjoying the warmth and the peace. You were wearing your favorite dress, and Klaus couldn't take his eyes off of you, and after a long, deep conversation about the big questions of life to your hidden secrets, you ended up making out on the ground. It was quite intense, and in that moment, the both of you officially knew you were in love.
It was happy news, so you shared them with his family. Each sibling accepted you, and it was all just perfect for you until it turned out that once again, Rebekah had chosen her men terribly. The man she was going out with, Alexander, was apparently a vampire hunter and he aimed to slay the whole Mikaelson family, but when they seemed too out of their reach, he made you his target and victim. He was willing to go far to kill the Original vampires in existence, which was a secret you had gotten to hear at the bonfire, but that was also where you got to taste some of Klaus' blood during the intense making out.
And so Alexander killed you in cold blood, slaughtered you and caused aching for the whole Mikaelson family, but most of all, to Klaus.
"Y/N is dead! Can you not see, my foolish sister, that your Prince Charming tore the love of my life from my arms and took her innocent life away", Klaus cried on that night, and on many more. Not even the pleasure of killing the five hunters in Italy could satisfy him, and soon he had already fled the town and the whole country, only to leave behind a very confused, reborn Y/N.
But you learned the tricks of vampirism. You were a strong, brave young woman, and had always been and therefore you got through it all. You never turned your emotions off, you never went on a ripper binge - you were a good girl, or at least disguised as one. A responsible, reasonable bad girl, perhaps? Because you were still the troublemaker you used to be, but now with an intense bloodlust and the aching to sink your teeth into something, or someone.
Klaus never saw your body. He never saw your death, but he was led to believe that you were gone and without a chance at salvation. It was easy for him to turn his back on you, and you didn't follow him either, but neither of you really moved on. It had been good times, though now they were over, until the present.

"To me, it seems like you can't sleep because that's fucked up. I mean, she was the love of your life but she got killed. I can see why you're troubled and bothered by this. Though, why now? Why are all these thoughts coming up so suddenly?"
Klaus chuckled, and took a long, deep swig of the bottle he was spinning in his hand. "Oh, these thoughts have been here all this time. Lately, it only has gotten out of hand. Uncontrollable, impossible for me to contain", he spoke, and gave his friend a weak smile. "I loved her. I still do. And it kills me every day from the inside to know that I once had something so great that it cannot ever be replaced, found again, nor revived", Klaus continued, and led the moment into a silence that bothered him to a point where he had to stand up and clear his throat to end it.
"You should go. I have some business to attend, anyway", Klaus spoke, and compelled his therapist to forget all of it before he headed out of the front door with determined steps. It had been a long couple of months, with the Mikaelson mother and the two once dead brothers back and alive, though in different bodies, but Niklaus found comfort in these little sessions he had with the so called family therapist who one way or another was always linked to the siblings.
Klaus was a troubled man, with lots to bear and bury but even his darkest, deepest secrets and the dustiest corners of his mind and thoughts came to life whenever he got the chance to sit down with Camille and just talk. They were close friends, and the bond they had, with the possibility to talk about anything and everything resembled the connection you and Klaus once had. But there was the slight difference that Klaus never compelled you to forget what he told you, he trusted you and confided in you. And also, he was head over heels in love with you.
He still was. You knew this, because you didn't die all those centuries ago - or perhaps you did, but now you were one of the walking dead, with an unbeating heart and the need for human blood and well as all hell. And you weren't just alive, but you were in New Orleans, and for the past weeks you had been following Klaus, walking on rooftops and keeping an eye on the hybrid. He was entirely capable of taking care of himself, physically perhaps but the one thing he needed to stay sane, was you.
And the very reason he had started to dream about you lately, seen you around, hallucinating and imagining was because you were there. They weren't hallucinations like he thought, it was really you, but you never allowed him to catch you, approach you and make sure you were really there because in a blink of an eye, you were already gone with the wind. You loved him, and you knew he loved you, but you only got one shot at a reunion and you wanted to make worth it. You wanted it to be blissful, euphoric, epic and legendary, not some quick "Hi, yes I'm still alive but we gotta go because your family is in danger once again", which sounded like the worst thing ever.
Although it seemed quite challenging to find a moment where Klaus would be in peace. You could tell he was a busy man, even more than he had been centuries ago, but you were there with peace in mind, and good intentions only. You hadn't turned evil over the years, you weren't there to bring a storm in town, act like a hurricane and fuck everything up. You were there to be in the arms of the love of your life who clearly longed it as much as you did.
The perfect chance arrived eventually, although the wait was unbearably long. You had considered lesser choices, but you found it fitting to approach him when he was alone and without a task at hand. There seemed to be always something to do, but after he had had a long talk with his mother he seemed fallen into his thoughts and he was sitting in the Lafayette Cemetery, where you decided to approach him for the first time in centuries.
You had missed him like hell. You let out a happy sigh and your lips curved up as you watched the man you loved, sitting with his knee bouncing up and down while he was chewing the nail on his thumb. Nervously, he pushed a shaky hand through his curls and he let out a distressed groan - clearly his mother had made a tempting offer but luckily he was a smart man, although impulsive and a maniac at times, but smart nonetheless. He wasn't a fool, and you knew without asking, that he would always choose his siblings over the crazy mother and the equally foolish brother Finn.
"Nik", you spoke in the eerie silence, breaking the haunting peace in the cemetery. You walked by the tombs, each step taking you closer to Klaus who slowly lifted his head from between his arms and offered a confused look to the one who spoke his name so fondly and familiarly. "Niklaus, love", you continued with a calm voice, and placed your hand on one of the tombs as you stopped walking and kept your distance, though the smile on your face was all very familiar and it was easy to tell from the look in your sparkling eyes how you wanted to jump onto his arms, wrap your legs around his waist and kiss the life out of him. And in another situation, he would have wanted the same, but turned out - you had chosen quite the poor time to show up after all.
"What the bloody hell is this?", Klaus growled and jumped up to his feet. He gave you a displeased glare, and it caused your heart to sink in your chest as you stood eye to eye with him, subdued by a cold stare. You swallowed thickly, but you weren't given the chance to speak when Klaus continued. "Fucking hell, I am frankly quite done with these witches in this town. I will slay every single one of them, and only when their blood is featured on my paintings will I rest...", he groaned and started to walk away from you. He pressed his fist against his mouth, and then pointed one finger at you, as if to accuse you of something.
"Go away! I will no longer let my lousy excuse of a mother to play with my head. Go away, you're nothing but lies and hallucinations to screw me up", Klaus cried out, his violent side suddenly falling apart as his beautiful eyes filled with salty tears, soon approaching his cheeks and trembling lips. Oh god, how he missed you, yet failed to see it was truly you there.
"Nik, it's me, it's really me. I ain't a hallucination by your mother, I swear this to you. On that night, by the bonfire, I got some of your blood in my system and after Alexander slaughtered me, I came back to life as a vampire--", you explained, and tried to take a step closer to Klaus but he warned you with a simple gesture of a hand, and you stopped. He shook his head, and let out a chuckle that was anything but amused, while looking down and then up to you with the same heartbroken look in his eyes.
"Oh, shut your mouth. She's good, I give that to her", Klaus sighed heavily, and earned a groan from you. Still the same stubborn man he had been all those years ago.
"I'm not something Esther created to mess with your head! It's me Nik, I love you, don't you love me?", you fought back, not giving in. You wanted him to realize and see instead of doing something he would later regret - you were alive although he had thought you weren't, but you were there now, right in front of his eyes and all he had to do was let the truth in and accept the fact that you weren't a creation of his imagination.
"I do, and that is precisely the problem!", Klaus shouted, trying to seem angry but the way his voice cracked and the tears continued to stream down on his face, they revealed his true intentions, "I love you, Y/N, more than anyone or anything, and Esther knows this and she's using it against me. She's using my only weakness against me!", as his knees shook and he broke down. He fell down, collapsed onto the ground to his knees and placed his hands down while sobbing uncontrollably. All these weeks, he had been holding it all in, he had missed you and he wished just to see you again and now that you were there, he thought you weren't real and it broke his heart. He missed you so much.
"Nik, no. She's not. She could, but she doesn't. I'm real, I'm the actual Y/N, alive and well. Think about it, you never saw my body, you never saw it really happen. Then you left Italy. You never got actual evidence that I was dead, except some words but words can't witness anything", you explained, only to prove your own point. Words didn't mean a thing. So maybe, that was why Klaus wouldn't believe you now. That was precisely why you walked over to him, went to his knees to be at his level and placed your hand on his shoulder. He flinched at the feeling, and lifted his head so you could set your hand against his cheek and wipe his tears away with your thumb.
"I love you, Klaus, and I'm sorry I didn't come to you sooner but I'm here now. And I'm real, I'm me. You have to believe me, love", you smiled weakly, and lifted his head enough for you to press your lips softly against his. It was a perfect kiss, full of flaws and awkward moments like your noses brushing together or the fact that you were sitting on the hard ground, but it was still perfect. It was magical, like you had imagined it to be, and with your eyes closed, your hands on each other's cheeks and your lips tightly on his, it was everything you had wished for.
"It's you, really. God, I love you, Y/N, more than you can imagine", Klaus breathed out when your lips disconnected. You chuckled, and shook your head, but instead of arguing more, you kissed him again. It was intense, and worth losing your breath for a moment, and you knew he agreed. You had missed each other so much, and finally you were reunited and at each other's arms.
"Let's go home", Klaus suggested, and stood up from the ground, lifting you up as well. You nodded in agreement, and kissed his forehead while your fingers interlocked and caused a smile on your lips.
"Perfect. So you can tell me all about that blondie you've been spending so much time with", you said teasingly and nudged him with your elbow. He chuckled, and you broke into a laughter as well, it felt so good to hear him laugh, feel his hand against yours and just be there with and for him.
It was time for you and him to have a second chapter in your relationship, perhaps this one could be much happier and better, and perhaps, Klaus would make that dream of marriage true one day.
