Imagine Elijah thinking he isn't good enough for you when you call How I Met Your Mother's Lily and Marshall relationship goals

No one really thought that Elijah Mikaelson would ever feel insecure or like he wasn't good enough, but everyone felt like that sometimes and the handsome Original vampire was no exception. Of course, he was one of the most gorgeous creatures to ever walk on Earth, especially in your opinion - you were after all his wife - but nonetheless he suffered from insecurity as well. It wasn't that he thought he wasn't good looking, because he was and you never allowed him to forget it, but he was afraid that he was a bad husband.

Really, Elijah was the dreamiest, best husband anyone could ever dream of and you often mentioned it to him but he had mixed feelings. Sure, you showered him with love, affection and compliments just like he did the same for you, but you also showed similar kind of fondness towards another married couple, who you called goals and it caused Elijah feel as if he wasn't enough.

Perhaps he shouldn't have felt defeated because of a TV couple, but How I Met Your Mother's Lily Aldrin and Marshall Eriksen were indeed goals. They were an admirable couple, and absolutely adorable together, and you weren't afraid of shouting out your love for their relationship, but you and Elijah were cute too. He just forgot that in the middle of all the insecurity as he followed from aside as you obsessed over the TV show and its characters and couples.

You were obsessed with How I Met Your Mother, and Elijah used to be too. You and him used to watch it together, and he knew your favorite characters, seasons, scenes, quotes, literally everything, but after he realized that you aspired to have a marriage like Lily and Marshall's, he couldn't anymore. He started to be afraid of losing you, and began doing things Marshall did to Lily, and he tried his everything to satisfy you but he didn't know that you were already as happy as one could be.

But he just kept thinking about how he'd lose you, to a TV couple, because he wasn't the perfect Marshall to your perfect Lily.

"That's what I call relationship goals", you'd say during every episode, and smile happily, wanting to have what they had. But just because you wanted to have something they had, that didn't mean you were unhappy. The opposite, really, you were over the moon as long as you got to wake up next to Elijah, kiss him, hold him, talk to him. He made you happy, and yes, so did the TV show and your OTP as you liked to call it, but all you really needed was Elijah.

"Yes, they are quite adorable indeed", Elijah would always answer with a ghost of a smile on his pink lips, but it was never genuine, only the remains of his confidence.

You weren't stupid, though. You had been married for the past decade or so, and you knew him well enough to tell whenever something was wrong or he was upset, and this time was not any different. Something was going on, but as he was too afraid to confront you about your feelings, you were too stubborn to do the same. You wanted to figure it out on your own, and it was evident that things would go south very quickly, with the two of you trying to mend the marriage that was never broken.

He hated it, with all his dead heart. Elijah barely cried, but because of this, he once in a while shed a few tears as he fell asleep with his back against yours, his arm hanging on the other side of the bed. It wasn't your intention, but you started to seem colder and more distant towards him and it shattered his heart, ate him from the inside and ruined him. All his life he had known how to cope with feelings and pain but now he thought he was losing the love of his life and he found himself crying, shaking, worrying and wanting to shut his feelings off. He never did it though, but when he saw your eyes adoring the characters on TV more than they adored your husband nowadays, he ached to escape it.

You never wanted to break Elijah's heart, but you did it, without knowing it yourself.

Then it just got out of hand, and he could no longer hide his heartache and the misery he lived in. He tried, but it was clear to you that he was falling apart and you hated to see him like that, so instead of sticking to your original plan of figuring it out by yourself, you confronted him. You quite honestly sucked at confrontations, but for your marriage, you had to go through with it.

"Elijah", you stated sternly on one day, drawing his attention away from the book he was reading to direct his thoughts away from you. Yet every single sentence somehow managed to remind him of you. His deeply hypnotizing eyes rose from the pages he was softly touching with his fingertips, and he gazed at you with a puzzled look, but he couldn't cover the sadness in him, though it was obvious that he desperately tried. You sighed and broke into a pout as you sat next to him on the couch, and took the book from his large hands which earned a disagreeing look but he shut his mouth and smiled weakly as your fingers interlocked.

"What is it, my love?", Elijah asked carefully and cleared his throat after hearing his hoarse voice. As if he had been crying only moments before. You looked down at your hands, and squeezed his tightly before raising your look and locking it with his hopeful eyes. You sighed again, and swiftly lifted one hand to caress his dark hair, causing him to chuckle fondly. Neither one of you spoke, when you had already wrapped your arms tightly around him, and he was pulled close to you body as you cradled him, embraced him and wanted him to feel the love. You shook your head, and kissed his soft temple gently before whispering into his ear.

"I promise, whatever you think is going on, you have no reason to be worried. I see it in your eyes, and the fake smile, and the way you act lately... 'Lijah, whatever it is, you can tell me, because I'm your wife and I love you", you encouraged and kissed his temple again. You let go of him, only to place your hands on his shoulders and give him a warm smile with an equally kind look to convince him. You knew that you had been kind of drifting apart lately, and that was your fault too, but you were considerably in love with him and you didn't want to lose him. You needed and wanted him in your life, and that was why you wanted to hear every little thing you had missed during the quiet days between you and him. You wanted to know what was weighing his heart down enough to cause him to cry when he thought you were asleep.

"Y/N...", Elijah sighed and looked down, avoiding your eyes but your hand went to his cheek to support his head and to make him look back up. He gave you a heartbroken look, but you returned a stern one to make him speak up, which he did. "But what if you don't...", he mumbled quietly, his voice breaking and doing the same to your heart.

You shook your head, and gave him a confused look while your hand dropped from his flawless skin. "What are you talking about?", you frowned, feeling sadness wash upon you like a wave. You shook your head again, and grabbed his face with your hands, cupping the cheeks softly and gazing into his eyes deeply. "What is going on?", you continued to ask, begging for him to answer.

"What if you don't love me", Elijah sighed and looked away, "I'm sorry", and then nearly stood up from the couch but you pulled him back down and gave him a serious look. You wanted to hear everything, although your heart was already breaking because you did love Elijah and it hurt you to know that he thought you didn't. Your other hand left his cheek to catch his hand and squeeze it encouragingly, which seemed to have an effect as he opened his mouth to tell more.

"I've seen the way you look at that TV. You're watching How I Met Your Mother, and when Lily and Marshall come on screen, your eyes light up... I can tell you want what they have. You call their relationship absolute goals. You want a husband like Marshall, and believe me, you're a wife like Lily, but I can never be that for you. I can never be goals for you", he explained sadly and sighed heavily while looking down at your intertwined fingers. You let out a fond chuckle, and Elijah's eyes shot back up to yours in shock and confusion, but before you could fix the situation, he continued.

"You want a marriage like theirs. But I'm not like him, and I'm afraid that I'm not good enough for you and you'll realize it any day now and then you'll leave me", he breathed out, feeling like a huge weight was lifted off of his heart but your amused look only pushed it back down and threatened to break him under the uncomfortable pressure. You noticed the frightened look on his face, so you shook your head and stood up only to sit down on his lap and place your hand on the back of his head and caress his hair.

"You're silly, 'Lijah. I love you. Okay, I also love Lily and Marshall, as a couple and as individuals but you're my husband! I married you for a reason, you know. I knowledged the moment when I said I do", you teased with a smile, earning a scoff from Elijah. You laughed lightly, and placed a gentle kiss on his forehead while wrapping your legs around his waist. "I married you, not Marshall, and I don't expect you to be anything like him. Yes, I say they're goals, but that doesn't mean we're not goals too. Because we totally are. We're everyone's goals. But I just really love their relationship", you continued to explain, and slowly, Elijah relaxed and calmed down underneath you.

His expression softened, and after you had wiped the salty tears in his eyes with your thumbs, he actually seemed quite happy and that was enough to make you smile widely as well. You rested your forehead against his, and slowly pressed your lips against his pink ones, while your hand held the back of his head. Elijah's large hands wandered to your waist, and he held you steadily against his body as your lips started to dance together along a song you had known for years now. It was something you were used to, yet always so magical, and this one was one of the most special kisses in a long time.

"I love you, Y/N", Elijah panted when the kiss broke, just wanting to declare his love over and over again. God, he was so in love with you, from head to toe, inside out, every inch and feature and trait was absolutely lovable and he couldn't help but look at you with such fondness and admiration it melted you from the inside. He was so truly in love, there weren't right words to dress up his feelings but you and him both knew that it was on a very special level. You were the most important person in his life, and he knew that no matter would happen, you would always be. And he was the same for you - and you never wanted to be without him.

"I love you too", you whispered and smiled. "Promise me, no more insecurity. And if you ever hide something like this from me again, I will get very angry at you, Elijah", you teased, earning a fond chuckle from him. You laughed together, and after a few declarations of love, you found yourselves in your bedroom, on the soft bed which you shared.

There was nothing dirty or hot going on. It was just you and him, your head on his chest, his arm wrapped around you, and your legs tangled just like your fingers as you resided under the warm covers. His free hand was caressing your hair, and his lips continuously pressed into your temple or the top of your head. He wanted to make you feel loved, but it should have been you doing all that.

"Elijah, I'm sorry. I never wanted you to feel sad or like you're not good enough, because you really are. You're even better than Marshall. And I'm nowhere near Lily, so you should definitely not feel bad about yourself. We're Y/N and Elijah, not Lily and Marshall, and I promise to never again cause such pain to you", you promised, when it was around two in the morning, and you were still cuddling. Not a word had been spoken in hours until now, but they were the right ones. Nothing else was needed, and you felt quite at peace as you closed your eyes and with a sigh rested on Elijah, and he smiled with his own eyes closed too.

One more kiss was placed onto your head, before you fell asleep peacefully, and with a happy smile on your face. Perhaps you could never exactly stop obsessing over the TV couple, but at least now Elijah knew that you were even better, and that someone, somewhere considered you two as goals.
