Imagine taking the cure to be with Matt but then you start to see the downside of the situation
"W-What's happening to me?"
"You were a vampire for 200 years, Y/N. You can't seriously except to become a human without any side effects."
Tears flooded down on your cheeks as your hands trembled and your eyes stared at the mirror where you saw yourself, just not in such a good shape as you used to be. For weeks, you were happy and perfectly fine, but now you were missing teeth, your hair was falling off and your whole body failing on you. Falling apart. You were falling apart.
Your hands touched the mirror, not wanting to believe it was the truth, the reality in which you lived now but unfortunately there was no escaping. After the cure-laced blood in you had been drained out, you no longer carried the advantages or the privileges and you were forced to age rapidly, make up for all those years you spent as an immortal, non-aging vampire. You were becoming old, until you'd finally die of what was supposed to be a natural cause but in your case, it was anything but natural.
"I know you wish you could go back in time and not take the cure, but you can't", the brutal truth was told as you fell onto your knees, sobbed and broke because of the sole fact that for once, you tried to do something good, the right thing, but that only led into your inevitable death. For once, you tried to be happy.
You wanted to be with Matt Donovan.
///
It all started when Klaus and Rebekah Mikaelson told that there was a cure for a vampirism. An intense search for this cure began, and once it was brought to everyone's knowledge that there was only one dose, that only one of you damned creatures could be saved, a violent fight for that cure began. Damon wanted it for Elena, and so did Stefan who also kind of wanted it for himself. Rebekah was in it too, and Klaus, and Atticus Shane, and even Katherine, and god, you really did understand why they all wanted and deserved it, but so did you.
Eventually it was settled that Elena didn't want it. She wanted to be a vampire, with Damon, even though she did crave humanity too but as she was one to always put her loved ones ahead of herself, she was willing to give it to you. Stefan was the same, he just completely failed to be selfish for once and take it for himself, and granted you the permission to take the cure. While others disagreed with the plan to give the cure to you, just so you could live happily ever after with your boyfriend Matt Donovan and live the life that was forcefully taken from you, some wanted you to be happy and especially Matt to be happy, which was a rare occasion nowadays.
You were over the moon when you got the cure in your hands. The tiny bottle that held in your future with Matt, with whom you had been together for over a year and a half now. You and him had something very special, ever since you met in Mystic Grill where he was the bartender who fell in love with the new girl, just wanting to have a drink to get over a bad break-up. That one drink, turned into something so much more, and you were glad it did.
Little did he know, the new girl happened to be a 200-year-old vampire with issues too complicated to solve.
At least in Mystic Falls, you found people who shared your pain and your feelings and they gladly talked with you or listened to your stories and rants, but one of them did it with more pleasure than anyone. Matt. He wanted to spend all eternity with you, although he kind of hated vampires, but for you he would have turned into one himself. He fell in love, and although you were the vampire who couldn't be saved, wrapped up in darkness, somehow incapable of falling in love, you did too. And the darkness in you vanished, as Matt was the light who made things so much better for you.
Matt was the love of your life, and even though there were many, many other reasons why you craved the cure, he was the most important one. You wanted to get married with him, start a family with him, move out of Mystic Falls and be normal together. You wanted it all, and while some considered it selfish, you certainly deserved it after dealing with so much pain and horror for the past 200 years.
There were many others too, who would have deserved the cure, but that didn't mean you deserved it any less.
"Matt? I'm home", you quietly spoke, your words only a mere whisper as tears got the best of you and you had to cover your mouth with your palm. You had taken the cure a few hours ago, at Damon and Stefan's house and it was proven that you were now a human, after centuries of misery. You finally got the life you wanted ever since you lost it. It was a dream you shared with Matt, he wanted it for you as much as you did yourself, and therefore you knew you were carrying happy news.
Every step felt so great, you felt so alive. Your feet carried you to the living room where Matt was studying by the fireplace, his thoughts drifting elsewhere as he tapped the pen against his temple silently, his eyes staring at the blank papers that should be covered with his handwriting by now but he got carried away and couldn't care less about his upcoming exams. You both loved and hated the fact that you would have to distract him only more, but lightly put, this was absolutely worth it.
"Matt?", you carefully began, repeating his name after realizing he didn't hear you the first time. His eyes flickered from his notebook to you, and in an instant a wide smile spread out on his lips only to vanish seconds later at the sight of you in tears. What he didn't know, yet, was that they were happy tears, in fact, the happiest tears you had ever shed. You had never ever been this happy.
"Y/N? What's wrong?", Matt asked in concern, and dropped the pen between his fingers as he jumped up from the couch and rushed over to you. His hands found your cheeks, and he cupped them while his thumb wiped away the tears underneath your eyes. Offering you a compassionate smile, he pulled you into a hug and held you tightly in a warm embrace, wanting you to know you were loved and okay as long as he'd breathe, but he had indeed misunderstood the situation. You pulled away from you, and he looked at you in confusion but you were happy to explain.
"I...", you started, but couldn't find the right words, so instead of attempting to poorly tell him, you walked to the kitchen and grabbed a knife before walking back to him. Matt's eyes flashed with disagreement and fear, whatever you were about to do concerned him and he felt strong hatred towards the idea you had in mind but you knew his mood would soon change. You gave him a smile, and then pressed the tip of the knife against your fingertip, pushing it deeply enough to cause a wound which you dragged down just an inch to make it bleed.
"Y/N, what the hell--", Matt began, but you didn't give him the chance to speak more when you dropped the knife, and sucked in the drop of blood so he could see the tiny cut underneath. His breathing stopped for seconds, and his body froze as he looked at the mark, suddenly understanding and knowing. His eyes widened and he released a low breath into the air, not saying a word, just staring at your finger, struggling to believe that the dream you shared was finally true.
"I took the cure", you simply said, and pulled him closer. "I'm human, Matt. Like you", you added and looked into his bright blue eyes as your arms went over his shoulders and your fingers got tangled in his blonde hair. You smiled widely, and he did the same while breaking into a happy laughter. His arms wrapped around you, and he started to twirl you around as you laughed together, the joy overwhelming you both.
"I can't believe it", Matt sighed adoringly and gave you a look of admiration, "I love you so much, Y/N, this is a dream come true. I love you", before placing his always so wonderfully soft, irresistible lips against your red ones, aching to feel the kiss. Your very alive body felt awaken when Matt's mouth met yours, his hands touched your hips and his body pressed against yours. Oh, it felt so good to be human and live every second so vividly.
"I love you too", you managed to reply in the middle of the kisses. It was obvious that the rest of the night went quickly underneath the sheets.
For weeks, you and him were perfectly happy and satisfied with every single thing. Mystic Falls was at peace, until all hell broke loose because of Silas, but even then you and Matt managed to remain in your own little bubble of love and happiness. Everything was fine, this you told yourself on a daily basis until it was impossible for you to do so.
Things went downhill real fast real soon.
You were supposed to go to the Grill and meet Bonnie, but you had barely gotten out of your house when you were attacked, knocked out and shoved into a car that was on the way to the Salvatore boarding house.
///
You woke up from a miserable darkness only to face the reality where terrible aching and pain all over your body was way too true. You groaned and sat up, stretching out your arms as you lifted yourself up on the couch. Your eyes were hazy, but after blinking rapidly you could see Damon and Elena standing opposite you, both of them with their arms crossed and a surprised look on their faces.
"Damn", Damon breathed out, "I didn't think you'd survive but I'm glad you did", and watched you look around in confusion. You felt stinging pain in your neck, and you brought your hand up only to feel blood and wounds caused by a pair of fangs, making your eyes widen as you suddenly woke up properly and jumped up from the couch. You gave Damon and Elena a horrified look, and took a few steps back when they both started to approach you - you didn't want either of them to touch you even the slightest.
"What do you remember?", Elena asked in a calming tone, but you didn't answer when you saw Stefan on the other couch - except that it wasn't Stefan. It took you only seconds to realize that it was Silas, and it made your expression twist into something even more scared and angry as you shot a cold glare to both Damon and Elena, who attempted to calm you down but miserably failed.
"What is he doing here? What did you do to me?", you screamed and took the bottle of booze on the table and smashed it onto the floor, making Damon grimace unhappily but you didn't give a damn about him right now. "You used me!", you cried out, the pieces suddenly coming together in your mind, and you seriously did not like it.
Your eyes were filled with tears and your fingers covered in your own blood, your whole body felt heavy yet at the same time so weak, and your thoughts were a mess you couldn't quite solve. Your body trembled, and you struggled to remain controlled, so instead you fell onto your knees and began panting heavily as the feeling of distress and horror washed upon you. You felt like the walls were coming down on you, and like the ceiling was about to crash onto you, and your chest tightened and your heart raced against your thoughts while the panic only got worse and worse.
"Y/N, what do you remember?", Damon repeated Elena's question, but his voice wasn't calming and soothing like Elena's. It was stern, strict, like he was demanding and you hated it but you couldn't fight back so you just shook your head, swallowed the tears and answered like he wished you to.
"I remember leaving Matt in the house alone, I was supposed to meet Bonnie at the Grill but I was barely outside when I was knocked out and taken...", you explained, your voice becoming quieter and fading away. Your sad eyes looked over to Damon, and fury replaced the misery as you spat out, "It was you, wasn't it?", ready to attack Damon and tear his limbs off. If you were a vampire, you could have done it, but now you were just a human and you were no match to him anymore.
"We needed the cure for Silas. And your blood was the cure, so he had to feed on you", Damon quietly answered, clearly ashamed for using you. But you didn't care about those regretful eyes or that look of remorse twisting his features - you jumped up and ran to him with all your weight so you managed to push him down onto the floor, leaving you on top and in control.
"I could have died, you dick! You didn't even expect me to survive, you were ready to kill me, ready for me to die? Do you understand-- Do you-- What that would have done to--", you explained, and cried desperately while hitting his chest in anger. Eventually you gave up and slid off of him and fell onto the floor, resting your head against the couch while wiping your eyes.
"Do you understand what it would have done to Matt? It would destroy him to hear that I'm dead, just as it would destroy me to hear he's gone. I've only gotten a taste of the human life and you were so willing to take it away from me. What do you have against my happiness, Damon?", you explained and stood up slowly. You didn't want to even look at them anymore, instead you started to drag yourself towards the front door to go back home. You would have to call Bonnie and call off the dinner plans, because right now, you just wanted to see Matt and be happy that you were still alive.
Your hand was on the front door's knob, when Damon's voice stopped you. "I don't have anything against your happiness, Y/N", he spoke, "I just happen to put Elena's ahead of everyone else."

"W-What's happening to me?"
"You were a vampire for 200 years, Y/N. You can't seriously except to become a human without any side effects."
Katherine's cold voice rang in your ears as you faced the mirror where the inevitable truth resided. You were becoming old, you were dying. Tears covered your cheeks and filled your eyes, and your whole body shook as you collapsed onto your knees, right after you had smashed the mirror to millions of bits and pieces. Katherine stared at you with a smug smile, she was quite happy she wasn't the one who ended up with the cure coursing through her veins.
You and Katherine had never been close, but right now, you hated her more than ever. She was a cold bitch, rubbing it all over your face how you were not even so slowly falling apart right in front of everyone's eyes until you'd just be a pile of bones. How would you even tell Matt? He, and you too, had lived in the belief that everything was perfect, that you and him could have a happy future with marriage and kids but after Damon fed your blood to Silas, things had went only downhill.
You happened to be out, and Katherine saw you as you started to cough up blood. For someone as dead inside as Katherine, it was friendly to make fun of you but take you home, anyway. Then your hair started to fall off, and after trying to eat something, you lost a tooth. You were rapidly aging, your whole body was failing on you and it was only a matter of time when your insides would rot, your heart would stop and you'd die off. It was the truth, which you didn't want to accept, and oh god, you definitely didn't want to tell Matt and break his heart.
You had both thought this was your key to happiness, the path you were supposed to walk on, but turns out, it was impossible for you to be happy for once. It had been a few good weeks, but now you were on a bullet train that only led into heartbreak and misery. And you could escape it, you'd die and it would all be over but Matt would have to live with it. He would have to, once again, be the one who suffers the most, loses everything and whose world falls apart right at his hands.
"I know you wish you could go back in time and not take the cure, but you can't", Katherine said, her voice somehow not as bitchy as you expected it to be. You turned to look at her, and scrambled off of the floor, kind of wanting to fight her but kind of not. For some unexplainable reason, she looked sad too, as if she'd miss you or something. It caused you to laugh lightly, but it faded away as quickly as it had arrived.
"I'm sorry, Y/N. Out of all the idiots in this town, I hated you the least, I guess", Katherine shrugged, and gave you a faint smile before walking towards the front door after hearing it open and close.
Matt had come home.
You walked to the front door, where Katherine passed Matt and offered the boy a gloomy smile as she made her way out of the house. Matt chuckled and turned to you, knitting his eyebrows together and asking what the hell was Katherine doing there, but he couldn't possibly smile when he saw you crying and fiddling with your fingers nervously.
Your sad eyes looked into Matt's blue ones, and you felt your heart shatter as he walked over to you and grabbed your shaky hands, holding them in his softly. You looked away, you didn't want to do this but you knew you had to do, so after Matt asked you to, you looked back at him and tried to smile but he could tell it was only fake. Tears rolled down to your cheeks, but your sobs had quieted down and now it was just silent tears, impossible to hear but still there, enough to make Matt's heart ache.
"After Silas drank the cure from my blood...", you began slowly, unsure how to word the situation, though after Matt flashed a reassuring smile at you, you couldn't hold the truth back anymore. "The cure protected me from aging. But now there's no cure in me anymore, and I'm... I'm aging, quickly, and uh, I'm... dying", you just let out, revealing the unfortunate truth.
Matt's smile disappeared, and his expression turned blank. His hands left yours, and he inhaled sharply as he walked over to the drawer by the door, covered with framed pictures and a vase of flowers, all of them then on the floor as Matt's hand reached them and smacked them off angrily. It startled you, but you didn't have more time to react when he rushed back to you, grabbed your hands again and covered your face with soft, gentle kisses.
"I promise, I'll find a way to save you. I can't lose you. I won't lose you", he started to explain, breaking your heart with the sad words and the tears in his eyes. Matt pursed his lips and wiped his eyes, but he couldn't stop the tears from flooding out - how could he, after hearing that the love of his life was dying, and not even so slowly?
"I love you, Y/N. I want to spend the rest of my life with you, I want to marry you, I want to start a family with you. I swear, I'll marry you tomorrow if you just won't leave me. Please, don't leave me. I need you, I love you. Y/N, don't go", Matt broke apart, not handling his feelings very well but you didn't blame him. You cried together, and you wrapped your arms around him, causing him to sigh happily as you closed him in a safe embrace.
"Don't leave me", he breathed out, his voice cracking because of the uncontrollable sobbing.
You closed your eyes and breathed in his scent, loving the smell of him, the warmth his body radiated, the feeling of him against you. You felt safe and happy whenever he was around. You slowly nodded your head, although you had no idea whether you'd have any kind of hope or not, but still, you promised.
"I love you, Matt. I promise, I won't leave you."
