Imagine finding out that Klaus is cheating on you // Based on I'm Not the Only One by Sam Smith

"You and me, we made a vow
For better or for worse
I can't believe you let me down
But the proof's in the way it hurts."

You and Klaus Mikaelson got married almost one hundred years ago in New Orleans, under the witnessing of two of his siblings, Rebekah and Elijah. You were deeply in love, and everyone could see it, and for nearly a century you managed to keep the fire burning.

Then it started to go out, fade and eventually die, like you had feared but you and him had a good run together. Happy decades were spent on each other's arms, under each other's protection, but like most marriages, it lost its magic. The kisses started to feel like a routine, the hugs weren't so special anymore, and you found yourself bickering over the tiniest things. And at some point, you were pretty sure that your husband was avoiding you and neglecting you on purpose.

You found yourself clinging on memories, and realized that you preferred them over the present. Still, you were in love with Klaus, even if he didn't seem to feel the same anymore but you had promised to stay by his side through everything, and therefore, through thick and thin you would. You were certain that you and him could be saved, but it was more or less a lie you told yourself to make yourself happy when Klaus wouldn't.

"Hey, Nik", you'd greet him every day with a smile on your face, but you only received a grunt in response. He told you how he was busy with the plans for global domination and all, and that he didn't mean to neglect you, but you were just in love, not blind or dumb. Everything that Klaus did to you, it was obviously his intention, but you tried to tell yourself otherwise, because you knew you'd break.

"For months on end I've had my doubts
Denying every tear
I wish this would be over now
But I know that I still need you here."

Then you started to feel suspicious about your husband's whereabouts. For months you had been keeping an eye on him, and the more you did it, the more you fell into the thoughts of him cheating on you. He left early in the morning before you could even wake up, and stumbled back home in the late evening. You barely saw each other anymore. Sex was long gone, too, so you were certain that he had someone to replace you.

It hurt like a bitch, but you stopped yourself from crying and continued to live in the fake happiness you built around yourself for your own protection. You didn't have much experience in heartbreak, especially not after being married to the same man for the past century or so. You knew that if he'd break your heart, you wouldn't recover, and therefore you put up a wall, denying every tear and every potential truth just because you wouldn't be able to deal with the reality of the situation.

Every day you welcomed Klaus home with a smile and open arms, and he gave you a quick hug or a quick kiss on the cheek, both emotionless acts without depth into them and you hated it. You wished it'd be over, even if you kind of didn't - you knew you needed him but it was so awful and wrong for the both of you. You didn't want to lose him but you knew it'd be for the best if you did.

It was terrible, but you loved him nonetheless and you prayed and clung onto the shreds of hope he left behind.

"You say I'm crazy 'cause you don't
think I know what you've done, but
when you call me baby I know
I'm not the only one."

"Nik, are you... Do you... Have you fallen for someone else?", you decided to ask on one day. It took you a lot of courage to confront him about it, and you couldn't even look him in the eye as you did, you just stared at your shaking hands and begged for him to tell you the truth. A happy truth, though. But instead he smacked you in the face with a sad, evident lie. A thousand years, that was how long he had lived, yet he couldn't lie with a straight face or be even slightly convincing.

"No", he said, breaking your heart instantly. He looked so guilty, so blamed, so caught - you knew what the truth was. And he had elected to hide it. "No, don't be silly. That's lunacy, baby, I would never...", Klaus mumbled, while taking your hand. You pulled your hand away from his touch and got up from the couch where he remained, but instead of walking away, you just stood there, taking in his every word and realizing that he was full of shit. He wasn't being honest with you, and it made you wonder, when did he stop? For how long had he been lying to you?

Baby. He called you baby, which he never did. He no longer called you love, you weren't his love anymore. Someone else was. Someone else had earned that nickname.

You understood easily that you weren't his number one girl, his best girl anymore. You had been pushed to the second place, maybe even lower than that, and now you just had to deal with the heartache that he didn't even allow you entirely by telling you the truth. You knew you weren't the only one for him, and you hated how he felt the need to hide that from you. You were his wife for god's sakes, but apparently, those vows, those kisses and those moments made together, they didn't mean anything to him anymore.

"Oh", you just breathed out, "okay. That's good, then. Love you", giving your husband a weak smile before leaving the living room. To be alone. Just like you always were nowadays.

 "You've been so unavailable
Now sadly I know why."

You knocked on Rebekah's front door, tears already streaming down your cheeks as you waited for her to open up and welcome you in. You needed her to tell you that Klaus was cheating on you, or maybe you needed her to convince you that you were being delusional and paranoid for no good reason, that Klaus was just busy and that he really did love you even if you felt otherwise.

Rebekah swung the door open and muttered out words like "bloody hell", "who dares", and "I swear I will--", but as soon as she saw you crying on her doorstep her walls came down and without hesitating, she wrapped her arms around you. Whilst hugging you, the blonde Original dragged you in and kicked the door shut behind her. She walked you to her living room and sat on the couch with you before placing both of her hands on your cheeks and pressing your foreheads together while her eyes bored into yours with fondness and concern.

"What did Nik do this time?", she asked, obviously blaming her brother for your state. She wasn't entirely wrong, really.

You shrugged. "That's thing, Bex. I don't know", you choked out, and wiped your eyes before continuing, "I think he's cheating on me. Maybe one hundred years is enough for one marriage, maybe there isn't a marriage that's supposed to last forever. He doesn't love me anymore, does he?", earning a sad nod from Rebekah. She hated to admit it, and you hated to see and feel it, but she agreed. She had been keeping an eye on Klaus lately as well, and turns out, you weren't the only one with suspicions.

"Perhaps. But Y/N, whatever will come out of this, remember that I am here for you. Us girls need to stick together, yes? And also, if you still love him, then you must fight for him, love. Nik is a hard man to deal with, but you've managed to do so for the past century and I know that if anyone can get to him, it's you. Or 'Lijah, but in this case, it's only you, Y/N. I wish you all the luck with my brother, you know I love you and I want the best for you, darling", Rebekah explained and gave you a warm smile. You broke into one too, even if you barely had reasons to smile anymore, but maybe Rebekah was right. Maybe you could fight for Klaus.

But maybe, all hope was lost already. Maybe you just needed to let go like he had done.

"I have loved you for many years
Maybe I am just not enough
You've made me realize my deepest fear
By lying and tearing us up."

You decided to confront your husband about his infidelity once again, but this time you weren't going easy or soft on him. Not too much, at least. You knew for sure that he was cheating on you, and honestly, you had every right to go up at him and yell, shout, let out every tear and angry fit if you felt like it. He had done wrong, while you had loved him all these years, so many years.

"You've been cheating on me", you blurted out on one day, surprising Klaus. He was getting ready for bed, and you struggled to remain in your spot calmly when he turned to you with a bare upper body and an open belt. But then you reminded yourself that you weren't the only one who got to see this sight so often, and it brought disgust into you and you managed to stay under control again, and with ease, too.

Klaus didn't answer, and it made you chuckle, but not out of happiness - you were right. "I knew it. You're cheating on me, Nik. Why? I have loved you for so many years, and you just decide to throw all of that away! Maybe I'm just not enough, then. You could have told me, though. You could have said something instead of going and banging some other chick behind my back", you let out, angry, but the tears in your eyes and the sadness in your heart caused your voice to crack and break even if you tried to sound furious.

"I've done so much for you, and this is how you give back. By betraying me. I should have known that you weren't capable of loving, capable of being married. You're the worst, Klaus, I didn't see it before and honestly, I still kind of love you which makes me sick. You're a horrible person yet my heart manages to see through that", you spat, "but I still won't live with you for another night. I'm leaving, and I'm never coming back, because even if I love you, a bigger part of me despises you, you monster."

Klaus' eyes flashed with anger but quickly came replaced with sorrow and misery. He understood that he was losing you. Once, he loved you too, but he had done mistakes and actions that were impossible to forgive or forget. His hand went for yours as you opened the bedroom door, ready to walk out of the room and out of his life, and he managed to get a hold of you to stop you from going.

"Y/N...", he started, but he didn't know what to say. "Love, please...", he continued, but it was worthless. It didn't work on you, no more.

You shook your head, "I'm not blind, nor stupid, Nik. You lied, you tore us apart, broke everything, set it all on fire and watched our bond burn to ashes. Don't you dare touch me or try to get to my good side. You could have kissed me, talked to me, show any signs of affection but you didn't and now it's late", and yanked your hand away from him. "Goodbye", you spoke once more and then walked away.

And you didn't look back. And you didn't come back.

"I know I'm not the only one."

For so long, you had loved Klaus Mikaelson, and for most of your marriage, he loved you back. You had special love, many memories that you had shared with your friends and they never stopped cherishing them and bringing them back to life even if you and Klaus had nothing to do with each other anymore. You got a divorce, and you moved on with your life with Rebekah's help, while Klaus fell apart. He killed his mistress, too. He didn't want her anymore. He didn't need her anymore.

 He needed you.

Losing you made Klaus see how badly he was dependent on you, but he knew it was all his fault. You so bravely tried to spark the long lost fire in you, and he just neglected you and your attempts to do so which led into actions he couldn't stand thinking of. It led into him losing you, and he'd never get you back.

Klaus broke, officially. Not even Elijah, who had managed to do a lot, could bring him back from the darkness that had swallowed the hybrid whole. He was gone, he was lost - just like you. But you managed to break a few smiles or laughs, you actually lived, until it was your time to go away. While Klaus just lived in the heartbreak.

And then, he understood that he wasn't the only one for you anymore, either. You were in an endless relationship with death now, and you were happier than you had been with Klaus for the past months. So you both had your own guilty pleasures, dark secrets, but his was the worst and he'd never have peace in his mind or comfort in his heart.

He just should have loved you back the way you loved him.
