Chapter 6
"I believe you were the one who invited me here," I said confidently, trying not to check him out. He had the black helmet he was wearing under his arm which probably was the cause of his messy hair.
"And if I'm not wrong, you refused to come," he said, the right side of his lip tilting up.
"It's not like I want to be here," I mumbled to myself, turning around and placing the Coke on top of the ice cooler.
He came around me to open the cooler and pull out a bottle of water. Opening up the bottle cap, he gulped more than half of it down while I stood there watching his Adam's apple bob up and down. Realizing how creepy I was being, I averted my gaze to find Kyla talking to some random guy.
"Aren't you going to congratulate me?" Seth's voice caused my eyes to focus back on him.
"If you're fishing for compliments, you should probably go to the group of girls staring at you," I said and pointed at the girls who were shamelessly staring at him. "Over there."
He turned around to look at them, causing them to erupt in giggles and pretend to engage in conversations. I rolled my eyes, how much more pathetic can they get?
I grabbed my Coke and began walking away in the other direction while he was checking them out with a sly grin.
"Hey! Ava! Wait up!" I heard Seth call out followed by the sound of running footsteps.
I didn't, of course. I feel like doing the exact opposite of what he wants seems to please me a lot. He caught up with me effortlessly.
"Where are you going?" he asked.
I shrugged, taking a sip from the Coke.
"So you're just aimlessly walking?" he questioned.
I shrugged again.
He groaned and suddenly grabbed my free hand in his, making my eyes widen and the Coke can to almost drop. He began pulling me forward with him while I tried to free my hand from his grip. His palm felt oddly rough yet smooth at the same time.
"What are you doing?" I exclaimed.
"I want to take you somewhere," he responded, turning behind to look at me with those light brown eyes of his.
"Where?" I asked, still trying to free my hand.
"Just trust me," he said, pulling me forward.
I rolled my eyes. Trusting him was something I didn't plan on doing any time soon. When his grip was loose enough, I yanked my hand away and stopped walking.
"I'm not going anywhere with you till you tell me where we're going," I declared and placed the Coke can on the ground next to a huge rock.
"You're so stubborn," he commented, standing lazily in front of me.
A frown etched out on my face. My mom always calls me stubborn and that's the one thing I've grown to hate over the years. I'm not going to let someone else label me as stubborn too.
"No, I'm not," I argued, crossing my arms over my chest.
"Fine, then, prove me wrong by going with me without asking any questions," he demanded, a smirk playing on his pink lips.
I peered at him through my lashes and contemplated whether or not this was a good idea. A challenge always tempts me. Screw it. "Fine."
I noticed his smirk grow wider as he turned around and began walking, expecting me to follow him. After a moment of standing there, I followed him and realized he was taking me to his bike. I had no interest whatsoever in sitting on that thing behind him. I wasn't going to let him call me stubborn again though.
He climbed onto his bike and revved the engine, causing a few people to turn around to look at him.
"What are you waiting for?" he asked, motioning me to sit behind him.
Internally groaning, I awkwardly tried to get on his bike without touching him but I almost lost balance and instantly grabbed for his shoulder. What kind of a person can't even sit on a bike?
Holding onto his shoulder, I settled down behind him and placed my hands on my lap, making sure to try and keep some space between us although it was becoming quite difficult.
"Very graceful," he stated, making me roll my eyes.
He turned around and reached forward to place his helmet on my head.
"Ew! Don't make me wear your sweaty helmet!" I exclaimed.
He laughed but forced me to wear it anyway. Clasping the buckle, he adjusted it on my head. "You look cute."
The bike jerked forward, causing my face to collide with his back and unconsciously making my hands clutch onto his shoulders. He was definitely doing this on purpose.
We swerved through the abandoned buildings and eventually stopped in the middle of the road next to an empty looking building. To be honest, I was kind of scared right now. Maybe this wasn't the wisest decision.
"Uh-where are we?" I asked.
"No questions, remember?" he reminded, the right side of his mouth lifting up.
Trying not to express any emotions, I pulled off the helmet and got off the bike. Hugging my jacket closer to me, I waited for Seth to tell me where we were going.
Rolling his key rings on his index finger, he began walking. Okay, so he always expects me to follow him. Wonderful.
I followed him into the building's elevator and watched him hit the top floor button.
"Does someone you know live here?" my voice echoed in the confined space.
"No questions," he responded.
The elevator stopped and opened up at the top floor. Seth motioned for me to go ahead so I did.
"This way," he said and he walked towards a door.
I stood there, hesitating for a minute. He opened the door and waited for me. Taking a breath, I walked towards him. Inside the door was a ladder aligned against a wall. He started climbing it and once he reached the top, I did the same.
A strong gust of cold air hit my body and blew my hair in crazy directions the minute I reached the top of the ladder. He outstretched his hand and after a mini mental debate with myself, I grabbed it and let him pull me up.
We were on the rooftop of the building. The first thing that caught my eye was the view. It was simply beautiful. The city far off was lighted with yellow and white lights, making it look like the entire dark night was lighted with stars. I looked up to find actual stars lighting the sky faintly.
This seemed like the perfect place to come and just sit at. The cool breeze, the silent night, the distant sound of vehicles; it was lovely.
"Wow," I whispered.
"I know," he whispered too.
I faced him and found him studying my face intently. Clearing my throat, I began walking towards the ledge while trying to pull my jacket even closer me to if that was possible. I leaned against it and peered down to find, as expected, an empty road.
I was beginning to like this place more and more.
Seth stood next to me with his arm touching my shoulder, closer than I would've preferred. His hair was blowing in the opposite direction; creating a messy nest on his head- it looked quite cute. If Seth had brought me here on our date, I would've been extremely immense for sure. I would've probably even agreed to a second date, which is something I don't do often.
"Am I allowed to ask questions now?" I asked, breaking the comfortable silence that had surrounded us.
I heard him chuckle. "Yes."
"Do you come here often?"
"If I get the time to," he responded.
He placed his palm on the ledge and lifted himself onto the ledge, causing me to gasp. "Seth! What are you doing? Get off the ledge!"
He laughed. "Relax. I do this all the time," he tried to assure me and sat down on the ledge, his legs hanging down the side of the building. One push or loss of balance and he would fall. I took a step away from him just to be careful.
"This is very scary. Get off the ledge," I said. "Please."
His laughter echoed faintly in the night sky. "You should join me instead."
"No!" I exclaimed. "I don't have a death wish, thank you very much."
"You're honestly missing out right now," he said.
I leaned over and looked down once more to have a look at the distance to see if I would die if I fell or not.
"Just come," he said, reaching for my hand.
His hand felt oddly warm in mine due to the cool breeze around us. He gave me a re-assuring squeeze. Sighing, I stood up as he helped me balance and quickly sat down close to him. My legs felt weightless next to his.
"You have no idea how freaking scared I am right now," I admitted, scooting closer to him.
His shoulders shook next to mine with laughter. "This is very amusing."
My head whipped to the right to glare at him which only made him laugh more. He wrapped his arm around me and pulled me closer, if that was humanely possible.
"It's okay, I won't let you fall," he promised, managing to smile through his laughter.
"If you do and I die then I will be coming back to haunt you so you better make sure you don't let me fall," I warned him.
"You're too cute, Ava," he mused, giving my shoulder a squeeze.
We sat there in silence for some time with his arm around me. I would've asked him to move his arm but it was just too comforting so I let it be and I was too mesmerized by the site in front of me.
"Congratulations, by the way," I said.
His mouth shaped into a full smile. "See, it wasn't that difficult."
I chuckled softly.
"Ava?"
"Yes?"
"Why are you vibrating?" he questioned, his eyebrows pulling in together.
"What?" I asked. He pointed at my jacket.
Shit!
Kyla and Kian!
I pulled out my phone to see 16 messages and 19 missed calls from both their numbers.
"Oh my god," I said, panicking. "They're going to kill me."
"Who?" Seth asked, glancing at my phone and pulling his arm away.
"My friends," I said quickly, dialling Kian's number and pressing the phone to my ear. "I came to the bike race with them and I didn't tell them I was leaving with you."
"Ava!" Kian shouted into the phone, making me jerk my phone away from my ear and hitting the back of my hand to Seth's chest. I quickly mouthed a 'sorry.'
"Where are you?" he yelled above the noise.
"I'm..." I trailed off realizing I didn't know where I was.
"Please tell me you didn't get drunk and now you're lost," he pleaded.
"No! I'm with this guy," I explained.
"This guy?" he emphasized on the words way too much. "We got you here to set you up with Seth, not to let you go flouncing around with any guy!"
"What? I'm with him. I'm with Seth," I confirmed.
"She's with Seth," I heard his muffled voice say to someone, probably Kyla.
"Can you please relax?" I pleaded. "Where are you guys?"
"We're still here but since you're busy, we're going to go back home," he said, suggestively saying the word 'busy'. "I'm sure Seth can give you a ride home."
"Wait, no!"
"Okay, bye!" he quickly said and cut the call.
I gaped the phone in my hand.
"What's wrong?" Seth inquired.
"Well, I'm kind of stranded," I said. "And I could really use a ride home."
He shrugged. "Sure."
