Chapter 26

The day after I supposedly friend-zoned Tyler, I was supposed to meet up with him for another one of our study sessions. Five minutes had already passed since I arrived at library.

With a sigh, I continued flipping through my text book to decide on what to work with him today. I stuck sticky notes on the pages that he wasn't the best at and prepared a few questions it. I glanced at the clock once I was done and realised Tyler was officially twenty-five minutes late now.

After waiting for a few minutes, I decided there was no point waiting and packed my things up. Saying a quick goodbye to the librarian, I made my way to the front door and pushed it open just as someone pulled it from the other.

My eyes connected with Tyler and we stood there staring at each other.

"Hey," I breathed when the silence became unbearable. "You made it."

"Yeah," he said, avoiding eye contact as he walked in. "Sorry I'm late."

"That's alright," I began saying but he was already walking towards an empty table.

I followed Tyler and seated myself opposite to him. I watched him as he silently pulled out his books while being extra careful so as to not look at me by any chance. I continued observing and found myself growing more and more frustrated by the minute.

"So this is how it's going to be now?" I asked, causing him to stop what he was doing.

"What do you mean?" he questioned, still not looking at me.

"You're just going to be this cold person towards me?" I inquired, "Pretend we barely know each other?"

"I'd rather not talk about this," he clarified. "Besides, we're just wasting our time from doing some productive work."

"Tyler, I'm sorry," I whispered.

He finally looked up to meet my eyes. His eyes no longer held the distant emotion they did when he first came in; they held something vulnerable in them now.

He cleared his throat. "You don't have to be."

"But I am," I insisted. "Is there anything I can do to make things better?"

He shrugged. "There's nothing to say or do. We've established that I like you and you don't like me."

That's the first time he's ever outright admitted that he likes me. I blinked and licked my lips, not sure what to say.

"I'm sorry," I repeated, feeling helpless.

"Why did you kiss me back?" he asked suddenly, his voice filled with curiosity.

"What?" I said, taken aback.

"You heard me," he responded, his eyebrows rising slightly. "Why did you kiss me back?"

I was at a loss for words. "I guess it was just so sudden and I didn't really know how to respond."

"Were you with Seth then?" he asked.

"No!" I exclaimed. "No, I wasn't."

He nodded.

"Right," he said, opening his book up and pointing at something on the page. "This bit here: I don't really understand it."

I stared at him for a beat longer than usual. What was with these sudden mood swings?

Hesitantly, I reached for the book and looked through it. After that, we continued with our study session. The only difference was that it was much more professional than our usual ones. It was strictly business.

When we were done, he grabbed his things and stuffed them in his bag. He began walking away without even saying a bye but I wasn't willing to let him go yet. I reached forward and grabbed his arm, stopping him in his tracks. He turned around to look at me with a raised brow.

"Tyler, I don't know what to say or do to make you feel better," I started, "but I want you to know that you are an important person in my life and I don't want to lose what we had. It's sad that things turned out this way between us but I'm willing to work things out."

He took a step closer to me and I let go of his arm, certain that he won't walk away. Shutting his eyes, he sighed.

"I'm sorry I was such a jerk earlier," he said, shaking his head.

"It's okay, I deserve it," I assured him.

"No...no, you don't," he said. "I wasn't even going to come today but I don't know what pushed me to. I'm guessing it's the fact that I'm failing miserably. It's just weird and uncomfortable, I guess."

"I understand." I nodded.

He took another step closer to me and suddenly, his hand was reaching out to brush the hair out of my face. His hand stayed on my face though. My eyes widened, realising what he was going to do. Seriously, was I not clear enough?

He leaned down, closer to my face. Instead of zoning in on my lips, he tilted his head to leave a chaste kiss on my cheek. As he returned to his towering height, I tried to pretend that didn't happen.

"I'm happy for you and Seth," he said, moving his hand away from my cheek. "I hope he makes you happy."

I gave him a tight smile. Returning my smile, he turned around and walked out of the library, leaving me with a bittersweet feeling within me.

*

By the time I reached home later that day, I was exhausted. Seth and I got to spend a drama free day after who knows how long. Kyla and Kian were being the embarrassing best friends as usual, though.

The doorbell rang, signalling that dad was home. He and I weren't really on the best terms. Mom decided to forgive me because I'm guessing she did something similar when she was younger but dad won't budge. Eventually, I gave up and decided to let things flow the thing they would and not mess with it.

About half an hour later, mom called me down for dinner. Mom and I made conversation and so did mom and dad. We didn't interfere with each other's conversations.

After dinner, I was helping up mom clean up when the doorbell rang. My eyebrows furrowed in confusion as I made my way to the front door.

I swung the door open, causing my eyes widened in shock since Seth was standing in front of me in a pair of black jeans, white T-shirt and an unbuttoned sky blue shirt.

First of all, I looked like poop in my strawberry printed shorts and tank top. Secondly, he didn't give me any prior knowledge that he was coming over while my parents had made it extremely clear that I was grounded and that they deeply disliked Seth.

"What are you doing here?" I hissed, loud enough for him to hear.

"Ava, who is it?" mom called out.

"Uh-no one," I called back and realised how dumb that sounded.

Seth's brow formed a V. "Tell them it's me."

"Do you have a death wish?" I asked, jabbing my finger at him.

I heard footsteps behind me and just as I was about to shut the door close, Seth stopped me and stepped inside the house.

Dad was standing behind me along with mom and they did not look happy.

Seth, on the other hand, was bubbling with confidence. He outstretched his arm towards my dad and said, "Hello Mr. Nelson. I'm Seth, Ava's boyfriend. I thought it'd be nice to introduce myself to you personally."

Dad's eyes lowered to look at his outstretched hand before he slowly took it.

"Do you mind if I come in?" he asked politely.

"Sure, take a seat!" I chimed in to avoid the embarrassment from the silence my parent's response would've brought about.

I led the way to the living room. Eventually, mom and dad followed after exchanging a few concerned looks.

"So, Seth, why are you here?" I asked since none of them were trying.

Someone please dig a hole for me so I can bury myself there forever.

"I'm actually here to talk to your parents," he clarified and turned to face them. "I am aware that you think that I'm not the best influence on your daughter. First of all, I'd like to apologise for the other day. That was completely my fault and I take full responsibility for it. I was the one who forced Ava to come with me since I had something really important to discuss with her."

He paused in hopes that they would say something and after an embarrassing and awkward silence, mom finally spoke up. "We accept your apology but make sure that never happens again."

"Definitely," he said, sounding all business-like. "Secondly, the pranks that took place on the camp...Ava's not the only one to blame. All of us were a part of it and it was something that we didn't think would end up going that far. I guess we were just trying to make some memories because that was our last trip together. We understand that what we did was wrong and I'd, again, like to apologise for it."

"We understand." It was dad that spoke up, making my jaw drop slightly.

How on earth is he this smooth even with parents?

"I am actually here because I was hoping to get permission from you for taking Ava out on a date," he asked, sounding nervous all of sudden. "I know she's grounded, she's told me that about a thousand times already but we barely get any time together in school and who knows where we're going to be after graduation. So I'd really like to spend some time with her."

I glanced at them to see mom's expression turn to one of awe and adoration. Even dad looked impressed.

Dad sighed loudly. "Alright, young man. You can take Ava out on a date. Who am I to say no after the extents you've gone to simply take my daughter out on a date."

Seth grinned victoriously in response. "Thank you very much."

He stood up and shook dad's hand again and as he took a step towards me, he shot me a wink. Instantly, I glanced at my parents to see if they'd noticed but apparently not.

"I'll see him out," I said quickly and made my way to the front door.

Once we were out, I turned around to face him.

"What were you thinking?" I exclaimed.

"Okay, I'd expected more of a 'Oh my god, Seth. You're totally amazing. I could kiss you right now.'"

My angry look didn't stay on for too long and I ended up laughing instead. I reached forward and wrapped my arms around his neck tightly. He spun me around, lifting me off my feet. My laughter grew louder as he finally set me down and still kept me close to him.

"Oh my god, Seth. You're totally amazing. I could kiss you right now," I said in between my laughter.

"I won't say no to that," he agreed, laughing too and leaned down to connect his lips with me.

Pulling away, he rested his forehead against mine and I could make out the faint smile on his face and just like that, I could see sparks fly.
