Chapter 12
We were given 10 minutes to change into appropriate clothing for beach volleyball. Carla and I made our way to the changing rooms, which were plain gross.
People who had walked in here with sandy footwear had left behind trails of brown water everywhere. Some girls walked in and walked out almost instantly. Well, there was no way I was changing outside with Carla holding up a towel to cover me especially when we were in the middle of a prank war.
I didn't want to take any risks.
Sighing, I propped my bag up on the sink and pulled out my bikini. It was a simple white bandeau with a double strap bikini bottom. Wearing all white has never been the wisest option for me but it was one of my favourites.
"We should've just worn these in the morning," Carla said, struggling to pull her bikini out of her bag while preventing the rest of the things from spilling out and falling on the wet floor.
I nodded in agreement. "Yeah, well, we didn't have time."
"I wonder why," Carla said sarcastically while turning around to change. I did the same as I prayed to the heavens that she didn't bring up Seth. Sadly, the heavens enjoyed my misery because Seth was exactly what she brought up next. "Seth is such a jerk."
I didn't respond but I started changing faster. I already had my bottoms on and I was in the process of pulling my top over my head.
"Have you ever had an ex who's a complete ass?" she questioned.
Shutting my eyes, I took a deep breath. "No, not really."
"Lucky," she commented as I adjusted the bandeau. I thought the discussion ended there but no, she just had to continue. "Not going to lie, I thought we were going to get back together eventually but then he seems to have...moved on."
Finally, after avoiding eye contact with her for so long, my eyes flicked up to see her. Did she just say that I was getting in their way?
"Excuse me?" I said harshly.
"What?" Carla asked, stuffing her clothes in her bag. "Oh! No, I didn't mean it like that."
"Sure you didn't," I responded and grabbed my things, making my way out.
"Ava!" she called me. "I really didn't."
I continued walking until she fell into step beside me. "I didn't," she repeated herself.
"Okay," I said with a shrug.
Why is this bothering me so much? It's not like Seth likes me anyway. I don't know if anyone else noticed but it was pretty obvious he was still into Carla this morning. Whatever.
I glanced at Carla to see her dressed in a sexy black halter bikini with plain black bottoms. Her blonde hair was up in a messy bun, the sunlight making it look brighter. Without even trying, she looked pretty. I noticed she had slight abs, which suddenly made me feel cautious about myself. I was positive that I wasn't fat but that didn't mean I had a sexy body.
Okay, I was checking a girl out.
Putting my sunglasses on, I looked away. That was a mistake, too. Seth was standing a few feet away with a group of guys.
He looked good. Like really good.
He was shirtless with his trunks hanging low on his waist. He wasn't extremely muscular but he had enough muscle to make his physical appearance look appealing. His black hair, almost looking dark brown under the intense sunlight, was sticking out in different directions probably because he had pulled his shirt over his head. His soft brown eyes were covered with dark sunglasses.
He casually looked up, mid-conversation and paused, facing my direction. Instantly, my head whipped around to look at Carla to avoid being caught staring, which I probably was. Carla looked at me, curious.
Did she catch me ogling at her ex who she most probably still has feelings for?
Heavens, please be on my side this time.
She didn't say anything so we walked to a tree and left our bags under it. People were beginning to gather in a circle by the court that was pathetically made by a half torn net in between. Mrs. Delia stood there waiting patiently.
Once everyone had gathered, Mrs. Delia began, "Seth, Henry, Abigail and Tracy, step in front and pick your teams."
Of course it had to be Seth.
Henry began and picked one of the best players amongst us. Then, it was Seth's turn. The right side of his mouth lifted up and then he proceeded to say the one name I wished he hadn't.
"Ava."
A few girls in the front chorused an 'aww' as I grumpily made my way towards him. I kept my eyes on my feet as I walked to ensure I didn't look at him.
Once I reached there, I glanced up to see Carla's glare. Ugh. It's okay. Just a few more days with her and then I will never have to talk to her again.
"You know when you feel like something's missing?" Seth leaned closer to me and asked. Without waiting for a response, he continued, "I figured out what was missing for me. It was seeing you in a bikini."
I scowled at him which only made him happier. Trying to like Seth was becoming more and more difficult by the minute. Sure, he looked good but he was a conceited, annoying little brat.
Eventually, all of us were divided into 4 teams and lucky for me, Carla was in the opposition team. I couldn't imagine being stuck in the same team with both of them.
We were one of the first teams to play. Getting rid of my flip flops, I took one of the positions near the net, my feet sinking in the sand.
The match went pretty smoothly. I thought Seth would annoy me during the match but he was quite focused to win, which we did. I didn't do much, though. The guys played very aggressively so I didn't really get the chance to do anything.
The next two matches, however, I did get to play and helped to gain a few good points for our team. The heat was making me quite drowsy- either that or the lack of food I had had today.
It was actually fun until, the last match.
We were against Carla's team and were leading by three points. Seth served the ball; I took my position as I watched the ball go over the net. The ball returned within a few seconds and one of the guys hit it. I reached forward to dig the ball but at the same time, Seth decided to do so as well.
Instead, he ended up crashing into me with full force. My left foot got tangled somewhere between his legs and I fell down, my ankle twisting harshly. Seth was beginning to fall and I flinched, waiting for the blow but his arms stopped him from crushing me. I groaned as my ankle began throbbing.
"Are you okay?" Seth asked, his eyes filled with concern.
"Get off of me," I snapped, placing my hands on his chest as I tried to pry him off of me.
He did and when I tried to get up, my ankle refused to let me. Seth offered me his hand; I took it after a moment of mental arguments in my mind. I let all my weight onto him as he lifted me up.
"I think I've sprained my ankle," I muttered as a crowd formed around us, Mrs. Delia trying to push through it.
"Ava!" she exclaimed frantically. "Are you alright? Can you walk?"
"I guess," I responded, still holding on to Seth.
"Seth, help her out of the court please," she requested. "I'll get the first aid kit. The rest of you, continue playing for a while."
Holding on to Seth's arm, I limped to where my bag was and sat down. Sharp pain shot through my ankle, causing me to wince.
Seth kneeled in front of me, his dark hair falling into his eye as he tilted his head to meet my eyes. "I'm so sorry, I really didn't see you."
"It's okay," I brushed it off.
Mrs. Delia returned with a box. Setting it down next to me, she pulled out a can and sprayed it on my ankle. It felt cold, which was nice especially in the heat. Then, she removed a bandage wrap and rolled it around my ankle, securing it tightly. It began to burn again.
"Do you want to go back to your cabin?" she inquired.
"Yes," I replied.
"Seth, do you mind-"
"Not at all," he cut her off and reached for me. Thanking him, she left with the first aid kit.
"You don't need to," I said, grabbing my bag. "I can go back on my own."
"Quit being stubborn," he said, taking my bag from me and placing it on his shoulder. "You can barely walk."
"Because of you," I commented, rolling my eyes.
"I said I was sorry!" he exclaimed, his eyebrows shot up. "I didn't mean to get your ankle sprained!"
"Yeah, okay, calm down," I responded and started walking, or rather limping.
He sighed as he watched my pathetic attempt. Leaning down, he hooked his arm under my knees and picked me up bridal style.
I yelped, attracting attention to us from the people who were on the court. Carla looked over but I didn't concentrate on what she was doing because I was too busy trying to free myself from Seth.
"Seth! Put me down!" I instructed as he began walking.
First of all, Seth picking up this way was just a big no but the fact that I was in a bikini and he was shirtless made it much worse. I squirmed in his grip, causing him to look down at me.
"Shh," he hushed me up.
"Seth, I can walk," I said.
"I want to reach your cabin by today," he said sarcastically. "You walking will make that close to impossible."
"Again, because of you," I exclaimed, causing him to roll his eyes.
"I already apologised," he explained as we reached the dining area. "Take it or leave it. Don't expect me to apologise again."
Wow. Even though it was his fault, he was being so arrogant.
"Jerk," I muttered under my breath.
"Thank you," he said with a wink. Ugh.
After some painstakingly long minutes, we reached the cabin. He put me down and stretched his back. "You really need to lose a few pounds."
My mouth dropped. He did not just say that. I smacked his bare chest, leaving a red mark.
"Ow!" he exclaimed and then started laughing. "I was kidding!"
Unlocking the door, I walked in with Seth's help and collapsed on my bed. I had no energy in me to change my clothes. Reaching for my bag, I grabbed out a loose top and pulled it over my head. When I was done, I looked up to see Seth just standing there and staring at me.
"What?" I asked, making myself comfortable. "You can leave now."
He took my blanket and carefully put it on me. The entire time, I just looked at him awkwardly. Was he incapable of making situations feel normal?
He leaned near my face, causing me to move back as a reflex. Smiling mischievously, he came even forward and quietly said, "I think I want to take you to a beach on our second date. I need to see you in bikinis more often."
