Chapter 11

"I want to shower first!" Carla whined as she sat cross-legged on the bed.

"Fine," I snapped, irritated by such a high-pitched voice first thing in the morning. "If you're in there any longer than 10 minutes, the consequences won't be appealing to you."

"I'm going to brush," Kyla cut in and walked past Carla to the bathroom.

I stared back at Carla, who gave me a sweet smile in return and busied herself getting her toiletries ready.

"This place is so dusty," Kyla stated from the bathroom. "I swear our toothbrushes have gone a shade darker."

I wrinkled my nose in disgust. "Just a few more days and then we'll be back home."

Kyla hummed in response. After a moment, she stepped outside with the toothbrush in her mouth, not looking very happy.

"Last night's prank was so much fun," Carla said while rummaging through her bag, clearly not noticing Kyla's distressed face.

"What's wrong?" I asked Kyla.

"This tastes weird," she said. "Did the two of you do something?"

"What, no!" Carla responded.

Kyla turned to me with squinting eyes, accusing me.

"What?" I exclaimed and she raised her eyebrows in response. "I didn't do anything!"

She walked back into the bathroom and I heard the faucet running. I got up and went to the bathroom where she was rinsing her mouth.

I said, "If I wanted to prank the two of you, I wouldn't do something as juvenile as doing something to your toothbrushes. Besides, it's probably the dust here."

Carla tried to squeeze into the already crowded bathroom and said, "While the two of you argue, I am going to shower."

"Wait, but I need to brush," I said.

"Too late," she said and shut the bathroom door.

Groaning, I walked back to my bed. Kyla still looked mad at me even though I had no clue what she was on about.

"If you did do that, Ava, watch your back," Kyla threatened, glaring at me, looking pissed.

I stared at her for a moment and then, I burst out laughing. Why was she being so melodramatic? She continued staring at me, which only made me laugh more. My laughter was cut short by Carla's shrill shriek echoing through the cabin.

Kyla and I ran to the bathroom door.

"What's wrong?" Kyla yelled, banging on the door.

"I thought we were a team!" Carla shouted. "I can't believe you would do this!"

"Do what?" I asked, confused.

"This is so gross," Carla said out-loud.

"Carla, open up," Kyla demanded and a few moments later, Carla opened the door.

A towel was wrapped around her loosely and her damp hair had some gooey white substance clinging on to it. It was just as Carla had described it- gross.

"What is that?" I asked, horrified.

"I don't know, Ava, why don't you tell us?" she demanded in an accusing tone.

You have got to be kidding me.

I walked into the bathroom to see more of the white gooey stuff on the floor and the shower head. Reaching up to remove the shower head, I tried not to cringe as my fingers touched the substance. I peered inside to find more of the same thing but some powdery substance too.

I showed them the shower head.

"It's powder," I told them.

"You definitely did something to the toothbrush too!" Kyla said with a gasp

"Gosh, how dumb are the both of you?" I said, rolling my eyes. "This was obviously done by the guys."

Kyla rolled her eyes. "There's no way Kian or Derrick would've even dared to."

"Seth could've," I countered, making sure to not look at Carla.

"Yeah," Carla agreed after a moment. "He could have."

"Oh god, what do you think they did to our toothbrushes?" Kyla questioned, staring at it with a look of disgust. "I had that thing in my mouth."

"I don't know but this is war," I declared.

Since Carla ended up having wet powder in her hair, I decided to give her so more time in the bathroom. She scrubbed her hair with shampoo for five minutes straight.

I wasn't willing to risk anything so I just rubbed some toothpaste on my teeth with my index finger and made a mental note to myself to ask Mrs. Delia if she had extra toothbrushes by any chance.

After we cleared the mess, we were officially late for breakfast. Changing quickly, we hurried up to the supposed dining area. Grabbing plates, we piled them up with food. I got toast with scrambled eggs and orange juice and went to sit where we sat last night.

Kyla and Carla joined me after a few minutes.

"So what happened this morning," Kyla began speaking. "Not cool."

Carla nodded in agreement. "We need to get some kind of revenge on either one of them."

"I have something in mind," I told them as they waited eagerly for me to continue.

Before I could continue, we were interrupted by the voice of the one person I'm sure none of wanted to hear.

"Good morning, ladies."

I turned around to see Seth standing there with a small smile on his face. Shooting him a glare, I turned back around and continued eating.

That didn't stop him from sitting next to me, causing to me to scoot over unwillingly.

"Thank you," he told me while I kept my eyes on the plate. I was in no mood for him this morning.

"So I was wondering something last night," he continued talking despite noticing that none of us engaged in conversation. "Do any of you happen to know what toilet water tastes like?"

My head shot up. No way. Kyla's eyes widened in response of what Seth said.

I looked at him to see that he had a smirk inching up on his face. When he noticed I was staring, he tried to set a straight face. "I mean, does it simply taste like normal water? Or disgusting poop water?"

"You are such a jerk!" Kyla exclaimed. "We just drew on your faces! Why would you put our toothbrushes in the freaking toilet bowl?"

Mason came along, saving Seth from answering.

"Who got the powder shower?" he inquired, excited.

"None of your business," I snapped, pointing my fork at him.

"So I'm guessing you got the powder shower?" he asked, his lips curving into a grin.

"No, I didn't," I responded.

"I did," Carla cut in, putting an end to our argument.

I saw Seth's eyes widen in response. His mouth opened up slowly as if he was thinking of what to say. "What? I didn't mean-"

"Alright, everyone listen up!" Mrs. Delia called out, cutting Seth off. "You have 5 minutes to wrap up breakfast before we begin with our activity for the day."

I looked down on my plate; I'd barely eaten anything, thanks to Seth.

Seth turned back to face Carla, who had a very annoyed expression on her face. "Carla, I really didn't-"

She raised her hand, hushing him up. "Save it, Seth."

Picking her plate up, she walked away from the table. Kyla and I looked at each other with uncomfortable faces.

I glanced at Seth to see him staring at the table with a glum expression on his face. Why does Carla still affect him if he's moved on? But then I guess it makes sense if he doesn't want her to think he did this just to get back at her for whatever happened between them.

It was still stupid, though. If he had moved on and he was already hitting on another girl...me...then why was he behaving this way? I felt an involuntary frown take up my face.

A moment later, he got up and left as well followed by Mason.

When I realised I was frowning, I immediately sobered up my face. Why was I frowning?

Kyla noticed this and asked, "Jealous?"

I rolled my eyes. "No. There was just so much awkward tension."

She nodded. "Exes suck."

I stared down at my untouched plate again. I'm going to have to go without food this morning, then.

All of us gathered in the front where Mrs. Delia was standing in white shorts, light pink T-shirt, high white socks and white tennis shoes. Which 90s movie did she watch before she came here?

Next to her was another lady who was dressing in a much decent tracksuit than she was.

"Good morning," Mrs. Delia began. "Before I begin, I'd like to introduce you to Ms. Ella. She has been assisting as a camp counsellor around this area for years now and she'll be with us for the next few days."

A round of awkward claps began amongst a few people in the front and eventually, everybody caught on.

"The students who took beach volleyball for the first session, follow me," Mrs. Delia instructed. "The ones, who took rock climbing, follow Ms. Ella."

We separated into two groups. I looked around to see who else was with me other than Carla. I caught a few familiar faces and then, I saw Seth, standing towards the end of the group, staring at me.

I groaned internally and stared back, unfazed by him. A slow smile creeped up on his face and he winked at me.

Someone please save me.
