Chapter One.

Kandy has awoken in a cold gloomy place. The time has seemingly gone as she looks at her watch, she has been asleep for over seven hours... That is not good if she wants to survive out in the open. The wipes her eyes of cold tears that have dried on her face and slowly moves towards her backpack. The fifteen year old girl is now on the run, like she has been since the virus went crazy. It decided to kill off millions of people and then turn them into monsters. Mental beasts that carry guns like machines.

She packs up her sleeping bag and continues to put a gas mask on. It will filter out all the germs in the air. Her friend Alastair had modified it but one of the adults had got to him. She shuddered, images flashing before her eyes. Pictures of Alastair. Blood everywhere. The guns. Kandy took a deep breath and tried to stop her hands from trembling.

She slung her backpack over her shoulder and headed for the hills. On the way she would hopefully find several shops she could take food from or if necessary take cover in them. Every so often she would find a car and look inside them to see if there were any weapons of cans of food. Kandy tried to avoid making any loud noises that would attract the defunct creatures.

Kandy looks around her at the trees and in the distance she sees something. She keeps her distance but remains curious...then it moves. It's a dog. She smiles kindly at the mutt and takes over her mask. The dog looks weary of her but walks towards her. When it comes closer she can see that its limping. "You poor thing," Kandy whispers "It's okay.". Kandy goes to stroke him but he growls so she lets him sniff her hand. "It's okay boy, I won't hurt you.". The white dog rests his head in her lap and she strokes him. She rips her scarf and wraps it around his leg. He whimpers as she ties the knot "I'll look at it later, we will have to make sure that it is not infected, but it should hold for now." she picks him up and starts to walk again.

The dog whimpers with every step Kandy takes and tries to jump out. "Hey, settle down boy." she whispers. Her eyes dart around her surroundings looking for the machines. The cold wind hurts Kandy's bare legs. She holds the dog closer to her and lowers her gaze to the ground. Wrapping her coat around the two she breathes a sigh of relief at the warmth that seemingly embraces her.

Her memory of Alastair floods back and she smiles when the dog nuzzles closer to her. Alastair was her best friend, brother almost. He had been everything to her, and her to him. They fought off the machines together and ran when there were too many.

The draft of foggy air seemingly got colder with every heavy step she took. All of her memories before the virus were good ones. Her and her brother playing in vast fields and baking with her mother. Her father working on projects in the garage with her. Her little baby sister learning from Kandy. She knows her little sister, Poppy, is out there somewhere.

Kandy rests against a tree and closes her eyes, hugging the dog. There is a loud noise that vibrates off of the buildings and objects around.

She opens her eyes and looks around her, trying to stem her breathing. No doubt its the machines. The dog growls "Shh." she lowers her voice to less than a whisper. She pokes her head round the other side of the tree to see if there is anyone about. Its one of the virus ridden people, they have a gun. She tries to calm the dog as they hear the footsteps of the machine come closer. At the last second the dog jumps out of her arms and barks ferociously at the man. It backs off but still holds the rifle ready to shoot.

Kandy tries to run after the dog but trips over and lands on the floor. She winces and raises her eyesight to see the dog attack the man. Kandy gets up and calls for the dog to come back but he doesn't listen. He barks and tries to bite the machine but they kick him away. Kandy runs at the man and kicks their shins. The machine yells and pushes her away with the gun.

Then it goes black.
