Coco and Lorenzo
The Blakely Auditorium in the center of campus never had heat, so it was dreadful when Mother Nature decided to be a bitch and make it feel like Antarctica outside. In a small college town just outside of Tampa, students began flooding the auditorium for a daily study of literature.
Dreading this class as it was at least negative seven degrees outside, Coco Fitzpatrick and Lorenzo Muccio, hand in hand, walked through the double stores and up the isle until they were in the back of the class.
"March 20, 2018. On this day in history, Dachau the first Nazi concentration camp, is completed. Welcome back, class. I hope you finished Night, which is why today's day in history is so significant. As Elie himself didn't go to Dachau, it was still a concentration camp from the days of Nazi reign. Did anyone finish the homework?"
A hand is raised, and Coco rises as she walks back down the aisle and to the front of the class. Her platinum blonde hair and hazel eyes made her stand out as one of the pretty girls at school, making the boys drool and girls jealous.
"In the memoir Nightby Elie Wiesel, he documents his struggles as a Jew in Nazi Germany. Throughout the read, we learn the many fates of his Jewish peers and elders, while Elie himself is making the effort to survive alongside his father, even if it means losing faith in his God, known as Yahweh."
Professor Langdon claps, amazed at the work Coco has just done. "Excellent presentation, Ms. Fitzpatrick. Anybody else? Nobody else did the classwork?" There's a pause. "Is it that or nobody wants to do the work? Alright, well, everyone get out your laptops for a pop quiz!"
Three girls, sitting in the back about four seats down from Coco, were the "blondes". Amber was the leader, who classified herself as the prettiest. Next in the totem pole was Shelly, who was the smartest of the three, although that's like saying you're the tallest dwarf. And, under both of them, was Donna. She was the oldest, most gullible, and the most annoying.
In a squeaky voice, Amber let out a sigh of disgust. "Really, Professor Langdon, a pop quiz? Tomorrow's purge night, give us a break."
Professor Langdon's tone shifts. "Purge night? I expect none of you to participate and I mean none. This holiday is nothing but a disgrace to our morals and the bullshit philosophy of cleansing ourselves is appalling. Now, I will repeat myself. Get out your laptops and start the pop quiz."
An alarm went off on Coco's phone in her pocket to signal the end of class, and as she went to submit her quiz a ball of paper grazed her hand and landed on Lorenzo's lap. He opened the letter slowly, and it read, "I have an order." Coco and Lorenzo look at each other, smile, and look at the perfect scores they received on the quiz.
A strong gust of wind blew as the class found their way back to their dorms. There was no snow, but the temperature outside made it unbearable for anyone to enjoy the beautiful campus. Lorenzo and Coco waited outside the auditorium until Shelly, one of the "blondes" came up the two.
"Did you get my note?" Shelly asks as Coco and Lorenzo quickly shut her up.
Lorenzo whispers to Shelly. "We handle this business in my dorm, not in the open. Do you want us to get caught?"
Donna apologizes and follows the pair through the campus, a walk of about ten minutes, before they ascended about four flights of stairs to the fourth floor of the Bowery Dorms. Lorenzo fiddled around in his backpack for his keys, unlocked the door, and led Coco and Shelly inside.
"So," Coco tells Shelly, "What's your order?"
The dorm is small, but enough room to fit the three. Four lamps illuminated the room and a small bed and desk were tightly fit. It was enough for Lorenzo, and he liked the peace and quiet and not having a neighbor.
Shelly takes a seat in a chair which is adjacent to the bed in which Lorenzo and Coco are on, cuddling each other before Coco grabs a clipboard.
Shelly fixes her shirt and the way her boobs are situated. "You know how I'm always second to Amber. Well, I'm finally tired of it. The constant bitching, her always being pretty, you know I can't even try to be smart or I'll be kicked out?"
Coco looks at her, confused. "Then why don't you just leave?"
Shelly sighs. "This is the most attention I've ever gotten. Besides, her rich daddy is paying for all three of us to attend here."
Lorenzo spreads legs and stretches his back. "So, you want to kill the girl whose dad is providing you tuition to attend here?"
Shelly chuckles. "He told us that if she were ever die on purge night, he would continue paying for us!"
Coco yawns and writes down Amber's name on the clipboard. "Amber Reynolds, fifth on the list. Do you have the money?"
"Money?"
Coco and Lorenzo look at each other, then back at Shelly. "You think we do this shit for free?" Coco questions, a bit annoyed.
"How much, then?"
"Two-thousand," Lorenzo tells her, "This purge business is what pays our tuition, and with an average list of twenty orders a year we are able to pay everything, and still have thousands left over." He takes the clipboard from Coco. "We expect the money before the purge tomorrow. If you don't pay us, we won't go through with the order. Alright?"
Shelly nods, and leaves the dorm. A chilling feeling goes down her back as she has the sudden feeling that she is being watched. "Hello?" she calls out but receives no answer.
Emerging, though, from the corner is Amber, who is side by side with Donna. "Where were you?" Amber asks, who is then repeated by Donna. "Donna, only I ask the questions, remember?"
"Sorry, Amber."
Amber puts her hands on her hips, looks Shelly up and down, and gives her a grimacing look. "Shelly, what were you doing with Coco and Lorenzo?"
Shelly's heart begins to pound. "Oh, nothing, just studying."
"Studying?" Amber asks, "You were studying with the purge pair? Shelly, answer this question truthfully. Did you just order for Coco and Lorenzo to purge someone?"
"No, of course not amber. You know how much I hate the-"
Amber slaps Shelly. "I'm going to stop you right there. Now, I know why your lying because when you do your eyebrows raise and your hands shake. Tell me, Shelly, who did you want them to purge? Was it me?"
"No!"
Amber slaps Shelly again, "Tell me who the hell you want dead?"
Shelly yells out the first name that pops into her head, sweat dripping down the temples of her head and trying hard not show that she's lying. "Professor Langdon!"
Amber smiles. Shelly makes a sigh of Relief. Amber hugs Shelly. "Aw, you we're one step ahead of me! I was just about to do that myself but I see you already have. Remember the purge party tomorrow and wear pink!"
Amber and Donna depart from Shelly, whose heart is still racing. She sighs, lowers her head, and begins to cry. She tells herself, "This is going to be one long purge night."
