Why?

TW: I dunno I'm improvising, BUT THERE'S GONNA BE ANGST

A/N Sorry not sorry, I have a lot of feelings after Dragon Ghosts

Aaron Stowe stood outside the door to the Head Mage's office gripping the handle but not turning it. This is-no his eyes slid closed in pain was Alex's office he thought as he stared at the polished wood. The last time he had been in here, his twin had been at his desk, sketching on a piece of paper and humming a song from a musical Samheed had written. Now Alex was gone. Buried somewhere far away.

Aaron took a deep breath and let go of the handle, sinking to the ground with his back against the door. He recalled the last conversation he and Alex had shared in the office alone.

Alex looked up from his drawings and smiled when he saw Aaron standing at the doorway awkwardly. "How long were you standing there." He asked getting up and walking over to his twin.

Aaron smiled sheepishly "I didn't want to inturupt, you were very focused on those drawings." Alex grinned and motioned for him to get comfortable and enter the office.

The two sat down and Aaron raised a questioning eyebrow "So what was the urgent matter you called me here for?"

Alex visibly blushed before he blurted out "I've been thinking of proposing to Sky and I need your help!" Aaron's eyes widened, he wasn't usually the person people asked for advice and he wasn't really sure how to help in this situation.

"Um...how am I supposed to help? " he asked warily. Alex averted eye contact and laughed nervously

"Well, you already proposed to Kaylee and um you have experience I guess so...I have no one else to ask for help." He stuttered out. Aaron began to panic, what was he supposed to say?!

" Just because I did it doesnt mean I know how! But w-when I proposed to Kaylee I did something I wouldn't, um usually do, I ......sang..." He trailed off, extremely uncomfortable. Being ridiculed was one of his greatest fears since being kicked out of the University.

Alex gave him a quizzical look "Why'd you do that?" He had seen his twin sing and he knew they both had minimal talent when it came to music. Aaron blushed but absently twisted his wedding ring, smiling to himself.

"I wanted her to feel special, not a lot of people have seen me sing so I did that for her. Only her." He said softly.

Alex grinned and shook his head "You know, I thought you were the least romantic person in the world, but you know what your doing!" Aaron looked up at his twin and laughed sarcastically making Alex burst into laughter.

After they calmed down Aaron said "I guess my only advice is, do something special that she will a always remember." Alex smiled "That's good advice." Then he looked away again and pushed his drawings towards Aaron.

"I was also uh wondering if you could, maybe, make this for me? I already designed it but, I have no talent with machines." Aaron looked down at the papers, they were covered all over with sketches of a ring that would hold a small picture inside and had millions of tiny designs all over it, depicting all the times Alex spent with Sky.

Aaron grinned and pocketed the drawings "I'll do my best. Anything else you need?" Alex shook his head and got up, Aaron stood as well.

They walked to the door and Alex hesitated before saying "Thank you Aaron you really have changed and I'm proud you're my brother." Aaron stood in surprise but realized Alex wasn't joking and said "I'm proud your my brother too."

They looked at each other, shared a smile and parted ways.

And now, Alex will never get a chance to propose to Sky, even if the ring was finished. He was gone and never coming back.

Tears welled up in Aaron's eyes and that empty spot in his heart that had connected him to his twin burned in pain. He started to sob violently tears flooding down his face. He buried his face in his arms and cried for hours.

He was head mage now, there was nothing else he could do about that for the time being. Would he have to live with this forever? This pain that made him want to curl up and never wake. This pain that reminded him he would outlive Kaylee and Daniel and his friends, the people he loved.

And on top of that, the dissenters were still there, cornering him and trying to make him step down. He didn't tell him what he was always thinking I would if Alex hadn't made me promise to keep Artimè safe when he died. What Aaron would give to have his life on the Island of Shipwrecks back.

But now, he was stuck on Artimè until someone with potential to be head mage came along. And who knew how long that would take?

The worst thing about this though was that Aaron would never see his brother again, never talk to him, or laugh with him. Ever again. The sobs racked through his body and he began to shake. He stood abruptly and opened the door, stepping into the office.

Everything was as it had been, sketches covering the desk, curtains drawn letting in light, dotted artwork on the wall. If he didn't know better Aaron would have thought Alex was just getting something to drink from the kitchens, or out on the shore with Sky, or with Ms.Octavia in the art room.

But that wasn't the case

Gone

Gone

Gone

Aaron sat on one of the chairs in front of the desk, the chair he had sat in every time he came to see Alex. But the chair in front of him stayed empty, mocking him. First Mr.Today then Alex and now...

Aaron slammed his fists onto the desk, making it shake. "It shouldn't be me!" He yelled "I don't deserve to become head mage!" He punched the table again and again and again until he grew tired and sank to the floor once more.

"It was supposed to be Alex forever." He said weakly and in a small voice. He began to cry once more Why? Why? Why did you leave us Alex?

There was no answer.

A/N Goodbye Alex *taps fist to chest* we are with you.
