Chapter Three

Mouse looked at his mother.

She wasn't paying any attention to him.

So naturally, as the adventurous kit that he was, he scampered off to explore.

Mouse jumped up some little cliff-things in the floor and pushed at a large slab of wood. The slab creaked open and...

"Whoa..."

The kit was in some kind of huge building, with broken-up floors and large white shapes. He bounded over to a shape and sniffed at it. It seemed fine, so he readied himself to jump and--

"I wouldn't do that if I were you."

Mouse fell over. "What?" he squeaked.

"I said, I wouldn't do that if I were you."

Mouse righted himself and turned around to see a golden cat with green eyes lying on a cushion. She was watching him with interest. "Why?" he asked.

"Sometimes, there are maggots or nests of rats underneath those sheets."

"Oh." Mouse couldn't really pretend he was supposed to be there, and besides, he didn't even know this stuff, so the she-cat's next couple questions would have come sooner or later.

"Hey, didn't Tawny have her kits? Are you one of them?" asked the she-cat.

"Yeah, my name's Mouse! My sister is Fluffles."

The she-cat smiled. "I shoulda known. You look like Dusk." She hesitated. "And Storm as well, I suppose."

At this point, Mouse's curiosity got the best of him. "Who are you?"

"Ah, I was wondering when you would ask that question. My name is Dawn, and I'm Tawny's sister." The she-cat hopped off her cushion and walked over to him. "See, we have the same eyes."

"I have green eyes?" Little gray Mouse had thought that he had amber eyes, like Fluffles. But he looked into the silver, reflective surface that Dawn had led him to, and saw a small, silvery kit with green eyes that could only have been him. His ears were tipped with black, and his long, thin tail, which was waving gently, was fluffy and white-tipped.

Mouse noticed that in the mirror, a mottled ginger tom was bounding toward them. Dawn turned around.

"Oh, hey, Sparks. This is Tawny's kit, Mouse."

Mouse peered out at the tom from behind Dawn. "Hi," he managed nervously.

Sparks smiled. "'E's my kit, an' I 'aven' gotten 'round to meetin' 'im." He bent close to Mouse. "I suppose you 'scaped from your mother an' sister?"

Mouse nodded. "You've met Fluffles?"

"Yeah, jus' now, actually. I came to look for you, an' Lil isn' happy. She came to look you an' Fluffles over, an' when you weren' there... " Sparks trailed off. "Well, Lil isn' comin' back to look you over till tomorrow."

"Oh." This meant nothing to Mouse. He didn't even know who Lil was. He realized he had been lost in thought when he was swung up into the air. Mouse twisted his head around and saw that Sparks had picked him up by his scruff. As he dangled in midair, Sparks carried him through the opened wood-slab, down the floor-cliffs, and set him down in the nest.

Tawny bent close to Mouse, sniffing him over. "Where were you? I was so worried!" She turned him over with a huge paw and sniffed his back.

"I wen' up za cwiffs," Mouse said, his voice muffled by the feathers.

"You did?" Tawny murmured absentmindedly, grooming him with quick strokes of her tongue.

"'E met Dawn," Sparks supplied.

Tawny had turned Mouse back over, and Mouse could now see, as he spit out a couple feathers, that Tawny was looking at Sparks questioningly.

"He met Dawn?" she asked him. "Who else?" Tawny's amber eyes had hardened and her hackles were up.

"No one," Sparks replied.

"Yes, but aren't you worried that someone might have seen him?" Tawny retorted.

Sparks shifted uncomfortably. "I-- I didn' think 'bout that."

Mouse was confused. Why would it be bad if someone had seen him? "Mama? I'm hungry."

Tawny turned back to him. "You are?" She turned on her side and pulled Mouse and Fluffles to her belly. Fluffles remained sleeping and Mouse began to suckle.

And as Mouse drifted off to sleep, his mind was filled with thoughts of Fluffles and mirrors and Dawn.

(The pic is Mouse. It isn't as good as Cover-Fluffles tho D:

And yeah! I finally updated!

Also if you're not Minty_The_Cat, MrBrewBrew, or reading both Sticks and Stones and Blinded by Reality, you gotta go read those cuz SaS, BbR, and TUCotLoF are basically the [non-Warriors] new fandom triforce of Wattpad. If you're a part of this fandom, you are now considered, as Minty puts it, a Fluff. I'm just going along with it cuz I think the term is adorable. And plus, Fluff - Fluffles. Bet ya haven't HEARD that one before! I'm sorry. Horrible pun.)
