Letters.
Mulan gently bounced Jia as she swept the floor. Ever since Zi Han, Lao's mother, went and sold the Bing estates, Mulan had no other choice but to move back in with her father. He didn't mind, of course, but Mulan insisted on picking up her old chores and jobs. If only for the reason it kept her active and helped shed the left-over baby weight.

All things considered, Jia was a very well-behaved baby. She only really fussed when she needed changing or feeding. Mulan's relationship grew stronger with Lao's twin sister, Yán Yǎ, and visited her not too long after Jia was born. While she was there, she chatted with her and their youngest sister, Měi Lián.

She also grew closer with Shang, who, despite his father having died while Mulan was otherwise occupied, hadn't really left the Fa estate yet. Sure, he travelled to his mother's old villa, six hours out of Mulan's home, but he never stayed long. When Jia was two weeks old, Shang asked for permission to court her.

She said yes. It helped as well when she saw how he was with Jia. Despite her not being his, not that it mattered, he was very gentle and nurturing with her. Mulan felt Jia was safe enough with him while she ventures to the village with her father. Now she wasn't pregnant, Mulan felt safer in defending herself if the time came... hopefully, it wouldn't.

Mulan switched Jia over to the other arm and swept the remaining leaves away. She cooed happily as she lifted her head. Mulan smiled down at her and blew raspberries. Jia cooed louder. Mulan knew it was her way of laughing, even though babies didn't really do that until they were three months old. She hung the broom back up by the house and took shelter to avoid the early autumn heat. It wasn't hot by any stretch of the imagination, but Jia was too young to withstand the sun's rays. She walked into her bedroom and began to nurse. She hummed ideally and picked up some mail that lay on her bed. A few were letters from Shang about his time on border patrol, one was a letter from her aunt congratulating her on Jia, a few from Lao's sisters, and an unnamed one.

She frowned as she picked it up. "Mulan?" Her father called. "Yeah?" She called back. "There's someone at the door for you," She frowned deeper. "Ok, I'm just feeding Jia, then I'll be there," She called. She proceeded to open the letter that lay in her lap.

Fa Mulan.
I hope you are well and are recovering from recent events nicely. My daughters have informed me of the events that occurred, and how you prevented them from being in danger. I wish to see you in my palace for a private audience. This is a private affair, and should not be relayed to anyone outside of your household. I shall expect you within a week of the date of this letter.
Sincerely, Emperor Wei.

Mulan reread the letter. She calmed her racing heart and burped her baby. She rocked gently until Jia's eyes slipped closed. She rushed out of the room. "Baba, baba!" She called. "In here kāihuā," She slipped in through the doors. She stalled. "Shang!" She gaped. He smiled. "Hey," She rushed to hug him, having not seen him for about a month. He hugged her back.

Banquets
"Your majesty," She bowed low. "Rise, Fa Mulan," He spoke. She did. The emperor smiled. "My daughters have told me about the kidnapping," He stated. Mulan didn't say anything. "They also spoke about how you prevented my sweet Mei from being forced into a Hun marriage," He said warmly. Mulan met his eyes. He gestured for her to step forward. She dropped into another bow. "I would like to thank you," He said, shocking her. "Sir?" She asked, unable to form any other words but. Wei smiled. "As an emperor, I thank you for keeping the princesses protected from an unwanted marriage," He paused. "As a father, I thank you for saving my children," Mulan met his eyes with a smile. "It's nothing I wouldn't have wanted someone to do for my daughter,"

Wei smiled back. "Yes, Mei mentioned that you were expecting. How old is she?" Mulan blinked. "Uh... she just turned six weeks old yesterday," She answered. Wei smiled fondly. "I remember when mine were that age." He reminisced. Mulan kept her smile on, somewhat confused as to why the emperor was so friendly with her. "Well, as a thank you, Fa Mulan, I would like to throw a feast in your honour. For protecting the princesses of China, and saving my daughters," Mulan blushed. "Oh, your majesty... I..." She paused for a split second. "You can bring your whole family with you if you wish." He continued. "Your father is Fa Zhou, yes?" Mulan nodded. Wei smiled softly. "How is he? I know he was gravely injured on his last serve,"

Mulan frowned. "He was with the troop that fought the huns, sire," She said. Wei stroked his beard. "Hmm. I wasn't aware of this... I shall have to chat with him when he visits," Mulan chuckled softly. "You are more than welcome to bring your daughter along as well." He flashed her a knowing smile. "Perhaps even the captain of my army would like to attend," Mulan blushed even deeper.

Xui and Jia meet Cheng. Xui is 6, and Jia is 9.
Shang paced anxiously. Mulan grimaced from their bed. "Shang, would you relax! It's fine! I'm not even in real labour yet!" She groaned. Shang eyed her nervously. "Yeah, but you bled with Xui. I thought we were going to lose you," He said quietly. Mulan sighed. "But you didn't. I'm a fighter, and so is the baby. We're going to be fine." She smiled. "Plus, you forget I had to give birth to Jia on my own in a storage cupboard in the middle of an attack... so..." She chuckled.

Shang sat next to her and grasped her hand. "Promise me you'll be ok." He stared into her eyes. She smiled. "I promise,"

Four more hours passed before Mulan decided she was in "real" labour. Her grandmother brought the local midwife in and kicked him out. "You need to be there for your other two kids, leave her to us," Ju chastised. He paced anxiously in their living room instead. "Is mommy going to be ok?" He heard Xui ask Jia quietly. "Sure she will," Jia answered back. "Mom's tough. She's not gonna die," Despite Jia only being nine, Shang felt oddly reassured by her words.

"Daddy?" Xui asked. He hummed. "Is Jia right? Is mommy going to be ok?" Shang nodded. "Of course, she will be," He smiled. "Then why can't we be in there with her?" She asked. Shang sighed and sat next to her. "Because mommy needs the doctor to help. The room isn't that big, can you imagine if we're all in the room?" He tickled her stomach. "There'd be no room for the baby!" Xui giggled.

Shang handed the baby over to Xui's waiting arms as she leaned against her mother. "He's beautiful," She whispered. Cheng fussed a little but Jia dived in with a slight nudge to Xui's elbow. She lifted it and he stopped. Shang gazed into his wife's eyes. "I'm so proud of you," He whispered. She sighed softly with a small smile.

The Li family
THIRTEEN YEARS LATER. MULAN IS 32, SHANG IS 34.

Mulan groaned loudly as she rolled over. "It's your turn," She grumbled. Her husband of nine years grumbled back. "I did them last time," Mulan kicked his leg. "Ow, fine," He staggered out of bed and towards the baby's room. "Dad! Stop them crying please!" Jia moaned, poking her head out. Shang raised his head to glare. "I'm trying," He grumbled. Jia mumbled and shut her bedroom door. Shang walked to the twin's bassinet and leaned over. "Now why're you two crying, hmm? Mom only just fed you an hour ago! You don't need changing either," He spoke. The eldest of the two, Yong, continued to fuss loudly. His twin sister, Mei-Lan, stopped and eyed her father with curious eyes. He picked them both up. Mei-Lan continued to eye him suspiciously, while Yong quietened down slightly.

"He's hungry," A voice spoke from the doorway. Shang chuckled at his sleep-deprived wife. "How'd you guess it was Yong?" She rolled her eyes and seized the baby and latched him on. The house fell quiet. "Jia called me dad," Shang said quietly. Mulan beamed. "Really?" Shang nodded. "How do you feel about that?" Shang smiled. "Happy. I'm glad she's accepted me in place of her real dad,"

"Whom she never met," Mulan reminded gently. "Only because he died. If he lived, this would be a very different tale," Shang argued back. Mulan shrugged. "Probably. But it isn't. And she's happy here, Shang." She rubbed her hand on his shoulder. "I know she argues with you a lot, but my grandmother said I was the exact same at thirteen. Don't take it personally,"

"Mommy?" The parents turned to the door. "Hey, guys, what're you doing up?" Mulan asked her younger children. "Mei-Lan sounded sad," Her four-year-old said. Mulan raised an eyebrow at her ten-year-old. She shrugged. "He dragged me here," Mulan snorted at the honesty. "Cheng Li! You should be fast asleep," She chastised. Mulan turned to her ten-year-old. "And you, Xiu, should not be encouraging this!" She lectured. Xiu rolled her eyes. "Come on Cheng, Mei-Lan's fine, see?" Seeing his baby sister was indeed ok, Cheng allowed Xiu to lead him to bed.

Mulan burped Yong over her shoulder. She rocked absentmindedly as she spoke to Shang. "Who knew thirteen years ago, we'd be here, married with five children?" She asked with a smile. Shang chuckled. "Nobody. Especially us,"

She laughed.

Bonus | The Fa Estate.

"Baba!" Mulan called. "Yéyé!" Jia shouted, running. Xui and Cheng followed. Mulan laughed. "Mulan! Little guàiwù!" Zhou called back. The children laughed as they tackled their grandfather. "Mulan?" She grinned. "Hello grandma," She greeted. She slid off of Khan, readjusting Mei-Lan in her grip. Shang followed suit with Yong. "How are you both?" She asked. Mulan followed her to a bench. She put Mei-Lan down on the ground. "Go on, go play with yéyé," She nudged her one-year-old's shoulder, promoting her to toddle off, shrieking with laughter. "We're good. Mei's just learnt to walk, as you can see." She chuckled. She turned her head over to Shang, who was playfully arguing with Yong as he babbled. "And Yong's just found his voice," She sighed.

She sat in silence with her grandmother. "Li would be very proud of you, Mulan," She placed her wrinkled hand on Mulan's soft one. "She would be proud at the mother you have grown into,"

Dinner approached, and with that, bedtime. Jia read Mei her story, as was her latest obsession, while Mulan rocked Yong to sleep and Shang delt with Cheng and Xui. When all of the children were asleep, minus Jia, who wanted to read in Mulan's old bedroom, she relaxed with some rice-wine by the fire. Her father cleared his throat. "Mulan... I have something to ask you... and Shang, obviously," The couple frowned. "What is it baba?" She asked. Zhou wrang his hands. "I am aware that when Cheng is of age, he will take the Li estate, yes?" Mulan exchanged a confused look with her husband. "Yes... but why do you ask?" She asked. Zhou sighed softly. "I was wondering... if I could sign the Fa estate over to Yong..." Mulan blinked. "It's just... this sesate is hundreds of years old... and... I'd just like to see it stay in the family."

She looked at her husband, who shrugged slightly. "I understand if you do not want this," Zhou continued. Mulan gestured with her eyes. Shang nodded slightly. "Sure, baba."

Zhou blinked. "Sure? What do you mean?" Mulan laughed softly. "Of course you can sign it over to Yong. I can look after it while he grows, and the children can help me harvest every year," She smiled. Shang laughed. "I'd like to see Jia harvest. She's got her nose in books all the time," She giggled. "Sure, but Xui and Cheng would love racing around and plowing the field. I used to,"

The small company laughed. "I shall get that sorted in the morrow," Mulan leant her head on her husbands shoulder. "It's a perfect thing, baba. Thank you,"
