Chapter Nine : People

"Theo?" I furrowed my eyebrows.

"El." He greeted me sternly. "That is the name you prefer, isnt it?"

I nodded.

"Are you looking for something?" He asked.

"I was just dropping off some papers but I am looking for someone named Lidah?" I answered softly.

Theo nodded, and his eyes flashed a brilliant blue.

"Lidah, she is in charge of the new servants after they are selected in the Gathering. You will find her office upstairs in the main hall."

I gave a quick nod.

Theo began to walk closer and then past me to the table where I had set the papers. He scratched at the scruff on his neck as he picked up the top paper and began to scan over it. After a few seconds he smirked.

"What?" I said anxiously.

He continued smirk reading.

"What?" I almost whined.

"Is it the wrong papers?" I asked defeatedly and Theo looked up with a glint in his eye and that same look on his face.

"Ugh." I sighed drastically.

Theo began to chuckle next to me. "No but it was fun to watch you freak out."

If there was ever a moment I wanted to slap a smirk off someone's face so bad it would be this one.

"Jerk." I mutered and Theo laughed again. It was a nice change from his previous fierce stare.

"You did well." He said while recovering from his laughing attack.

I rolled my eyes. He just had to mess with the new girl on her first day.

"Well thank you for the panic attack but I must be on my way." I sweeped around and began to strut out of the room when I remembered something.

"Oh and thank you for the clock. I didnt think anyone was actually listening to me." I half smiled.

He nodded back. "Your welcome."

I smiled once again before leaving the room and Theo and trotting up the stairs to the hall on the left.

I walked for a minute before reaching a white door next to a painting of a yellow vase with blue flowers. A little, gold name plate stuck on the door said Lidah.

Knocking three times I stook awkwardly outside the room.

The door opened and out stepped a woman with white hair down to her shoulders. She had soft honey coloured eyes. Her pale skin was slightly creased and she appeared to be in her fifties. She was fit and tall, very well for her age.

"El how lovely to meet you!" She greeted me, a wide smile plastered on her face.

"Uhm hello." I spoke softly. How had she known my nickname?

"King Blakesley told me that's what you prefer to be called?" She seemed to sense my confusion.

I nodded for an answer.

"Come in, come in." She ushered me into the room and had me sit in a white plush chair in front of the dark wooden desk in her office.

"So how is your first day going?" She grinned.

"Fine." I twisted my hands together, something I did when I felt uncomfortable or didn't know what to do.

"Well that's good. So I just need some information from you to complete your file if you don't mind." She said as she took a pair of purple reading glasses and placed them on her nose.

"Sure." I nodded.

"What was your previous classification?" She typed on a flat screen built into her desk.

"Unexceptional."

"Is black your natural hair colour?"

"Yes."

"Any allergies or medical problems?"

"No."

"Are you married or in a relationship?"

"Uh no." I frowned, slightly confused. I wanted to ask why my relationship status was important but didn't.

"Alright El, I think that's all for now." Lidah finished typing and then took off her glasses.

"Do I leave now?" I asked after a moment of silence and she nodded.

I quickly made my way for the door but her soft voice behind me made me pause.

"Oh and El, give Jax a chance will you. He really is a sweet boy once you get to know him."

I stared confused at her and was about to ask who Jax was but the door slid shut in front of me and I was left with my mouth agape.

Sighing out of frustration, confusion, and annoyance, I stalked away from Lidah's office and down the hall to the kitchen.

I knew dinner wasn't for a few hours and my stomach was growling.

Charlie waved at me when I walked into the bronze walked kitchen.

"El!" He greeted and waved me over to a table where he was cutting some carrots. "How was dinner last night?"

"Good." I nodded.

"The food or the company?" He winked.

"The food definitely." I chuckled with a blank face.

"I'm sure I heard your shouting match from here." Charlie teased.

"Seriously?" My eyes widened.

"No, but the guards outside the King's chambers heard it."

"Oops." I shrugged.

"But did you two make up?" He got a little more serious.

"We are on the same page now. I still hate him but I'm willing to tolerate him." I said honestly.

Charlie chuckled. "Fair enough. So what would you like to eat?"

"Whatever is fine with me." I shrugged.

"I have some meat pies left over?" He shrugged and I nodded before watching him wander off before he returned with a small pie.

He sat the plate in front of me along with a fork and returned to chopping as I picked up the fork and began to eat.

The crust was buttery and flaky while the inside was hot and steaming.

After I swallowed a bite I decided to ask the question that had been in my mind for the past few minutes.

"Charlie...who is Jax?"

"Jax? How do you know that name?" His eyebrows furrowed slightly as he continued to look down at the knife moving swiftly across the cutting board.

"I spoke to Lidah earlier and she mentioned the name but I haven't met him yet so I was just wondering."

"Oh well, he's a nice boy. Misunderstood sometimes but nice none the less."

I nodded and then took another bite.

I scarfed down the food in no time and then took it back to the dishwasher. When I made my way back to Charlie I told him I'd see him later and then left the kitchen.

The halls were bustling with a few servants when I stepped out into the hall.

They were pushing carts of freshly polished dishes to the dining room. I followed behind them and made the decision to go back to my room before dinner.

As I passed the dining room the servants waited outside while two buff men in tailored suits inspected the carts before they could enter.

I presumed they were making sure that everything was there.

Once I got to the hallway that led to my room I heard voices from around a corner. My interest peaked at the words that sounded harsh and angry.

The figures that belonged to the voices turned the corner ahead of me and I realised why the voices sounded familiar, it was Shay and Michael.

"I think that he doesn't know what he's gotten himself into." Michael whisper yelled.

"He's got a good head on his shoulders, we will know soon if it was a mistake." Shay replied more calmly.

Michael nodded before looking up and noticing my presence, his eyes immediately narrowing into slits.

"El." Shay greeted.

"Shay. Michael." I said back.

"How has your first day gone?" Shay asked again as Michael refused to even look at me.

"Fine. I just finished actually as was about to go back to my room." I folded my arms securely across my stomach.

"Very well then." Shay nodded and before Shay could say goodbye Michael stormed off.

"What is his deal?" I said, looking at Michaels ever disappearing back.

"He's just not used to the fact that his Highness selected you after the way you acted. He will get over it eventually." Shay said quietly. A door slammed down the hallway and I flinched. "Well hopefully." He added quickly.

I rolled my eyes once.

"See you at dinner."Shay waved and then we both went in our separate directions.

The moment I stepped into my room I flung the door shut behind me, releasing a loud sigh.

I didn't understand it here. Why was everyone so difficult and confusing. It was as if everyone had two personalities.

Shay was friendly and helpful but at he same time would turn his back on you in a moment if he needed to please the King.

Theo was considerate but looked so mean and hateful on the outside that it made me scared to be around him.

Michael...well Michael was just an all around jerk. He was rude, arrogant and hateful to me when he didn't even know me. I didn't understand how I had done anything wrong to him. Shays explanation was simply no excuse to Michaels childlike behaviour.

The King on the other hand was a puzzle in himself. One moment he's easy to get along with and sincere and the next he's screaming at me and harsh and rude. He had two personalities and I never knew which one to expect.

I flopped down on the bed.

This was the most boring place I had ever been in. When I was "free" I had a job to keep me occupied and a house to upkeep but here I had to wait around to do whatever "His Majesty" so desires.

There was no television, no books or games on my room, and no one to really talk to besides Alfie and Lux who had jobs to do. I was bored out of my mind.

I pushed myself off the bed and went to go explore the closet for the fourth time.

Thinking I had seen all there was to see I flicked aimlessly through the racks until something caught my eye.

Behind one rack of long, glittery, dresses was a cabinet. A silver circle in the wood paneling held the outline for a key and a small pad with green buttons next to it.

I used my ID card to scan across the key pad and a green line said aces granted. The cherry wood door of the cabinet slid open and I gasped at what I found behind it.

Resting in royal blue felt, a diamond tiara glittered under a single light. The white, silvery jewels formed an elegant crown that made me scared to look at it, fearful it might break.

The crown consisted of a diamond circle on the bottom with rows of diamond in resents gapes forming connecting semicircles, creating little tips. It almost reminded me of waves in the water or mountains.

But what made my heart stop was the little silver plate on the bottom of the inside cabinet that said "Property of King's Servant".

So did that mean this was mine?

Guilt washed over me and I was certain that I was looking at something I shouldn't. That crown looked fit for a princess not a servant. But why was it locked away like that, and why did my ID card unlock it?

I knew this was probably hidden for a reason so I carefully closed the door and moved the clothes back. This was a mistake, I was only causing myself more confusion.

Doing the only thing I could think of I went to the other side of the closet and grabbed a pair of black skin tight, spandex shorts and a thin, stretchy, grey nylon, spandex jacket. A zipper went from the top to mid chest and seams were no where to be found.

I picked up some black tennis shoes and got dressed before taking off out of the room.

Remembering from my tour I followed along to a place where I knew I could relieve some stress.
