Chapter 3: Torture of Love

Whitewing's P.O.V.

It was later that night. I was rolling around in my sleep, when I opened my eyes and saw a moonlit warrior pad out of the den. I smiled, thinking it was Ashfur, but I was wrong. As I followed the tom out of the warriors' den, I followed him out of the camp. By then I knew it was Birchfall. I followed the light tabby almost to the lake. He stopped near a hollow and turned around, as if he could see me.

"Come on out, Whitewing," he meowed. I stepped out of the bushes.

"How'd ya know it was me?" I laughed, but stopped when I saw how angry and spiteful my friend looked. Birchfall hissed at me, and I shrank back. He started to circle me.

"I always thought you loved me," Birchfall meowed.

"I was wrong." I dipped my head. "I'm sorry, Birchfall. I never meant to hurt you, honestly! I want to keep you as a friend, though. If Ashfur ever...well...maybe if he is killed in battle, you can become my mate?"

Birchfall just stared at me, his amber eyes shining with mischief.

Whoa...what was with the weird look in his eyes?

Suddenly the brown tabby sprang at me. All I saw was pale fur for a moment, then realized the young warrior had me pinned up against a tree.

"Whitewing, Whitewing, Whitewing..." he shook his head.
I growled. I was much bigger, much stronger, much smarter, and much more experienced, but decided I would let him pin me down for now to see what he was going to do with me.

"You should have never screamed at me. I might do something to you..." Birchfall dropped me and I landed hard on the ground. He stepped over me, laughing. I knew what he was about to do. Just as he tried to mount me, I screamed out with all my might. Birchfall hesitated. Luckily he had not raped me that night, because suddenly Ashfur appeared out of the bushes, and knocked his nephew off my back.

"Thanks, Ashfur," I panted. I looked at Birchfall, who was staggering to his feet. He stared at me, pleadingly.

"Please, Whitewing...by MY mate. I love you MORE than Ashfur loves you."

Ashfur hissed. I shook my head. "Absolutely not. But I won't ever forget you as my friend. Can we still be friends?" I asked. Birchfall looked on, narrowing his eyes.

"I thought so." Ashfur and I padded away, our tails entwined.
