Chapter Four
-Camp Half-Blood, Earth; After Lunch-
~Unit Leader Hesper's Point of View~
"I'm sorry," Commander Nyke started out with his hands held up in a 'calm down' gesture. "I didn't know that Kosmos would do something like that. I apologize on his behalf, Daughter of Ares."
I sighed, tiredly in my head. Of course, the first thing that Nyke did was apologize for the assassin's behavior. It was a common occurrence for Kosmos to anger someone whenever he was sent on a mission that warranted interaction with others. It was really starting to become a problem, one that resulted with everyone else dealing with the consequences of his actions.
Clarisse La Rue, the head counselor of the Ares cabin, scoffed. "Don't bother," She sneered with crossed arms. "If he isn't going to do it himself, then I won't accept a worthless apology from you."
I smiled slightly behind my hood. She hasn't changed it seems. "If I were you, I wouldn't wait for that apology." I told the daughter of Ares. "Kosmos isn't known for nice words and kind gestures."
"Then how do you work with Kosmos?" Piper asked.
Milos scoffed. "We don't get along very well. Kosmos is the highest assassin that Chaos has, he isn't a team player. He doesn't interact with us, we're beneath him." The unit 5 leader explained.
Commander Nyke glared at him. "That may be true, but Kosmos is still respected. He may be an assassin, he's one who fights against those who wrong others."
"That doesn't mean Kosmos is easy to be around." Charis spoke up from where she was sitting next to Vernandos as he leaned against the wall by the door.
Malantha sighed. "And it doesn't help that Kosmos doesn't listen to Commander Nyke..."
"What? You're the head commander! Shouldn't you be able to command Kosmos or have Chaos do it?" The daughter of Athena stood up, glaring at the head commander of Chaos' army.
Nyke glared at Malantha and Milos. "Charis brings up a good point. He isn't easy to be around and that's why he's seen in a negative light. I understand your concern, but we have a war to fight. Let's not argue about someone who is only here to help." He sent a final glare around the room, daring anyone to go up against him.
"Of course, " Chiron sent his own stare around the room. The stolls slid down their chairs in defeat, Clarisse didn't like it but didn't say anything, and Annabeth huffed. "You called this meeting, Commander Nyke. What did you wish to discuss?"
"Right, " Nyke cleared his throat. "We don't know who the enemy is, but I've talked it over with Chaos and he's agreed with my idea to train the campers. Each of the unit leaders has mastered a certain skill and will be in charge of training each camper that skill."
I rolled my eyes. Boys, I thought privately to myself. I stepped forward to explain in better detail than our forgetful commander. All eyes turned to me. "What Commander Nyke is forgetting to mention-" I sent him a small glare through my hood. Even though he can't see my face, he shivered a little as he felt my glare. I smirked a little as I continued. "-is that we need the head counselors and Chiron permission before we can train the campers."
"And the vote needs to be unanimous." Malantha added.
The counselors looked around the table. Some were uneasy, some were determined, others were unsure, and a few didn't care about the final decision.
An indecisive argument broke out shortly after.
I settled in for the inevitable wait that comes from any...discussion that the campers of Camp Half-blood has. Before long, the counselors were yelling and shouting at each other as they tried to come to an agreement.
I looked around at the other unit leaders, noticing how close Vernandos and Charis are as they whisper to each other. My lips turned down at the thought of those two secretly dating. While there wasn't a rule against it, there was a rule against sharing our identities with each other. I glanced at Nyke wondering if he knew the identities of each unit leader.
I found myself thinking of an old...friend who helped me and my old best friend out. Could Nyke be the selfless, self-sacrificing kid from way back then? How could he? The mal - man that I am thinking about couldn't be the head commander of Lord Chaos' army. Not when millenniums have passed. Even with the time difference between Earth's years and the magical borders that surround Planet TO.
I have served with Commander Nyke for over a thousand years. With my understanding, the man that has plagued my thoughts for years can't possibly have been with Lord Chaos at that point.
Shaking my head softly before one of the campers (hopefully not a child of Aphrodite) caught me staring at the head commander.
The startling sound of a knife being sharpened grabbed at my attention. If Milos noticed the two sets of eyes on him, he didn't react. The unit 5 leader leaned against the wall by the wall, absently fiddling with his one throwing knife that he keeps with him.
Sharing a quick look with Malantha (or as well as one can with magical hoods that hide the wearer's face), we realized Milos wasn't bothering anyone else. The sound could only be heard by our trained ears it seems. The unit 2 leader shrugged at me and went back to studying the half-bloods around the table.
Sometimes, I believe Malantha and I had met before we came to Lord Chaos. It's been about two thousand years since she became a unit leader. Unlike other armies, Lord Chaos doesn't hand pick his commanders from his existing soldiers. I don't know why we were chosen. It wasn't Nyke's decision either.
My thoughts drifted to what Kosmos had said over three hours ago. What he said about Percy Jackson-
A quiet giggle came from unit 4's leader. She and Vernandos stood with each other on the other side of the door from where Milos was. I rolled my eyes, used to their lover interactions that they have sometimes.
"We've come to a decision." The daughter of Athena announced to the now silent room.
"And?" Commander Nyke prompted.
Annabeth Chase frowned slightly at him, eyebrows furrowed in thought. "What does the training consist of?" She shot back.
Nyke nodded and stood up from his seat. "Each unit has a certain skill. Unit 1 is filled with archers, unit 2 focuses on abilities, unit 3 is for the craftsmen, unit 4 are the knife wielders, and unit 5 is the swordmens. Units 1 and 5 will be joining us tomorrow around lunch. For training, unit leaders 1, 4, and 5 will take turns training each cabin as they see fit. Malantha-" she waved. "-will focus on helping the cabins who have abilities from their godly parents. Vernandos-" he gave a short nod. "-will work alongside cabin 9. I will float around and help out wherever I can. If anyone has a problem with the training plan can bring it up with me."
The leaders of Camp Half-Blood seemed to be pleased with the plan, but ultimately looked to Athena's daughter for the final answer.
Her stormy gray eyes analyzed us as much as she could. "We agree with your terms."
Commander Nyke's shoulders sagged a little in relief. "Great! I will need a training schedule made up from you by breakfast tomorrow. We will start first thing after breakfast."
He turned to leave before he realized he forgot something. "Oh, and units 1 and 5 will be arriving around lunch tomorrow. See you at dinner."
As we followed the head commander out, I couldn't help but feel that maybe Lord Chaos was wrong to send all six of us... or seven of us if one can count Kosmos as part of the group.
Only time will tell what kind of trouble can happen with so many Chaos' soldiers in one place that wasn't designed for us. Hopefully Camp Half-Blood is still standing after this war...
This...took way too long to finish. I would apologize, but honestly, how did you put up with me? I update once a century. I work on chapters here and there until I actually sit down, managing to finish something somehow.
Well, it's late. I wasn't planning on doing this. I really didn't edit this, I'll do it once this story is complete. I already need to with the amount of mistakes I have seen reading through the previous chapters.
Um, I would continue with this author's note by making a half-false promise, but I'm not going to do that as this is my life now. Starting to a write a chapter until finishing it five months later...it hasn't been five months...right?
*Quickly checks to see how long it has been*
Okay! Oh, good! It hasn't been five months. I published chapter three on April 10th and I did an author's note on June 30th. All in all, not terrible.
With that being said, I have started writing chapter five. Although, there are no promises on when it will be out.
School prep is slowing down, but I don't know how much time and energy I will have when classes start. I am doing a terminology course right now and it isn't too bad. I only have one lesson and quiz to do for this week.
So, yeah. I'm tired, this is long, and I'm not going to drag this out by making more excuses for myself with my lack of writing.
I hope you enjoyed this chapter (I don't even know if this is good...I used to have standards). Thank you for reading!
Next chapter we will see Annabeth and how everyone is doing since Percy disappeared.
Until next time!
