Her Sister

It was just one of those days. She was bored. But she had gotten a place to sit on the metro ride back home. So, she pulled out her phone from her pocket and mindlessly scrolled through social media.

Flowers. Book. Coffee. Celeb posing with a dog. Oh, cute dog! Heart. Heart once again just in case it didn't hit the first time. Scroll more. An actor. Poetry. Someone getting married. Oh, wait...Scroll up. The actor???

She began to read the post. It said, "We are not kidding, guys. One of you gets a chance to meet your favourite actor. He's in town and he really wants to spend a WHOLE DAY with you.

But like all good things, there's a catch.

You have to send him a letter. Tell him anything. Tell him about your day. A new song that's running in your mind. Tell him your favourite vacation spot. A childhood memory that makes you smile. Just about anything.

He loves letters. Much like his new character in his new film 'Letters to You'.

So, he's waiting. For your letter. And to spend that one lovely day with you.

Her eyes went from glazed to wide to sparkly. Oh god, this was the way! This was what she could do.

She clicked on the link and started typing.

Dear you,

First of all, thank you for choosing to do this film. The concept of letters has always been magical for us. From Letters to Juliet to The Lunchbox, every movie that builds its universe around letters, my sister and I have watched. I mention my sister because if this letter was to play out like a film, I'd only be a side character. An enabler of the story, if you will. She would be the main protagonist. How could she not be? It's you on the other side after all.

Then, why am I writing the letter, you ask? Truth be told, she's tried writing to you before. But you won't find any mention of it anywhere. In her words, she is never able to truly express what she feels for you. So it's left up to me to do the job. Currently without her knowledge.

I must paint you a mental picture for you to understand. A picture of her as a fan.

Your movies are a place of solace for her.

You don't know her or her life but you've changed it inexplicably. She appreciates stories more. She understands the weight a character carries on his/her shoulders. You've opened doors she didn't know existed. No other actor has impacted her life the way you have. It is the dream of every artist to make an impact on people. An impact that can't be explained. An impact that just is.

Well, she's living proof that you've accomplished that dream.

If by chance, this letter does win the contest, I hope you know that the prize that comes with it...a day with you? It's a day my sister will never forget.

Even if it doesn't win, but you get to read this letter, I think we would have won in essence. Because once you read it, you'll have a connection with my sister. You'll know that side of her that only people close to her, get to see. When she knows that a letter forged that connection...well, she won't be able to express those feelings either. But do know that it is a feeling that she will eternally cherish.

Hope you tell many more wonderful stories impacting many more lives in the best of ways. This is just one of them.
