You Were a Unicorn
Describing Celeste as beautiful would be the biggest understatement I've ever make in my life. She was ethereal. There wasn't a single breeze in the glade but her long silky mane seemed to waved back and forth in such a gentle and relaxing manner. Celeste's dewy blue eyes sparkled with intelligence and deep, yawning sorrow. She stood, taking small delicate steps towards as, as if she were gliding over the saturated grass on angel's wings.
I was speechless. After weeks and weeks of journeying and hearing of nothing besides how utterly terrible unicorns could be, this felt like slap in the face. I felt ashamed for being angry at such a creature. Celeste was pure, she could do no wrong. She was the one who could help us.
"I miss your smiles." She breathed gently, as if she too were in awe.
"Wh-what?" I stammered. "I don't think we've ever met, have we?"
Celeste blinked. "I'm sorry, I've forgotten your situation. My name is Celeste. You must be Ren and Galia."
"We were told you could help us?" Ren asked.
She nodded. "You want to know why I cursed you."
"Please." Ren begged, clasping his hands together.
Celeste turned around, and started towards a shimmering sapphire colored pool. "Come my children, I'll tell you all about your previous lives."
She sat down on one side of the pool. We joined her on the other side, staring at the perfectly clear water. Ren sat criss-cross and rocked back and forth eagerly.
"I want Galia to go first." Ren requested, patting my hand lightly.
I was flattered, but Celeste and Lucille shared a look.
"I think it's best if you go first Ren." Celeste tried to explain to him.
He looked slightly disappointed but not all that put off. "Oh, okay. I'll go first then."
I don't know how I felt about his. I hoped everyone would stop acting so weird around me after this was all over. I didn't really like the fact they acted like they knew something I didn't, it made me feel outcasted.
"You were born on your farm to your father and mother, they named you Thomas, after your grandfather." She explained, dipped her head so that her delicate pearly horn disturbed the glass-like surface of the pool. "You were not supposed to die so young, it was in a twist of fate that it happened. I couldn't stand by and let your innocent blood be shed."
I leaned forward and saw pictures of a young Ren running around the farm in nothing but his underwear, these short sequences Ren got older and older until the final one showed Ren going off into the woods with an ax, presumedly to cut down trees, but he never came back. I glanced over at Ren to see he had tears in his eyes.
"You ready for your memories?" Celeste questioned, her voice gentle, like a mother's lullaby.
"Yes." Ren replied, voice cracking.
Celeste leaned forward and lightly touched her horn to his chest. All of a sudden Ren gasped like he was in pain. He clutched at his heart, as warm tears rolled down his cheeks. I watched with concern, hoping this strange ritual wouldn't kill him suddenly. His stormy blue eyes flashed open and he smiled at me, he looked so happy it was hurting me to look at him. Ren was so filled with joy it was rubbing off on me.
He laughed, it was a chorus of small bells, the leaned over and out of the blue decided he wanted to hug me.
"I can remember them Galia." He sighed, sounding like the most satisfied man in the world.
Okay if he didn't chill I was going to start crying. I hugged him back gently. "I'm glad."
"Me too."
Celeste looked to me. "I want to explain some things to you first my dear."
"Am I going to get my memories back?" I questioned eagerly.
Celeste took a deep breath. "I'll tell you where you came from, but I'm afraid giving you back your memories might put you into a state of shock, you might get hurt."
The unicorn's voice went quiet. "I don't want to loose you again.
"What-?" I started.
"Please, just let me explain." Celeste interrupted.
I kept quiet and waited for her to tell me why I was so weird. It took all of my patience because I was at the end of my fuse now.
"You weren't born a human." Celeste started, "I changed you into one myself, because it would keep you safe that way."
"What am I then?" I inquired, feeling some of the tension lift off my shoulders as I was finally given some information.
"You were a unicorn." She hummed. "Not just any unicorn, you were my daughter."
Ren let out a wolf-whistle as I struggled to take in this information. I, Galia, had once been a unicorn. That...didn't feel like me at all. Not only that but the majestic creature that stood before me was my mom. I blinked, wondering if this whole thing was a dream. I must have opened and closed my mouth a few times because Ren had to poke my arm and ask me if I was all right.
"This is why I was hesitant to flood you with all your previous memories at once." Celeste explained, blinking emphatically.
"Wait wait wait." I held out my hands. "I'm a unicorn? You're my mother?"
She nodded her head. "Galia was the name I gave you upon your birth. You were strange little foal, because you insisted on changing it all the time."
"What?" I asked again, still struggling to believe this whole thing. "If I was your daughter why did you curse me and make me like this?"
Celeste gazed out to sky, suddenly looking troubled. "As you became older, my child, you changed."
She touched horn back to the surface of the water and I watched my reflection in the pool change with the ripples her horn caused. When the water was still again, I let a small chocking noise as all the air was sucked from my lungs along with the blood in my veins and the beats of my heart. I couldn't- no I wouldn't believe this. There was no way.
The fiery reflection of Memortra stared back at me.
