Madame Rose
"There's the town." Ren punted, as the came across a small collection of buildings.
"What should we be looking for?" I asked him, wondering if I could pickpocket his cash.
"Well my guess is you want some new clothes, maybe a hat?" Ren suggested.
My stomach suddenly lashed out at me like an abandoned animal. I heard a distinct growl.
"Let's get something to eat." I ordered, dragging him towards the nearest place with something edible.
It was a rather dingy and odd place called the Squirrel Hurl. I decided it was because of the numerous stuffed squirrels hanging as the decor on the inside. There was a metal name plate for each one, staying it's names and the viscous and bloody battle in which each had been taken down in.
Ren wandered around admiring the squirrels while I took a seat and ordered a plate of salad. I had to explain what a salad was, seeing how most of their specialties included some sort of squirrel meat. I survived though.
"That's some fine hair you got there, Madame Rose." The man at the next table winked at me. I scoffed at him, even though my cheeks turned red.
My disastrous pink hair. Something must be done about that. I bit into my salad ruefully, munching on the kale with such passion that Ren cast me an odd look when he sat down next to me.
"What?" I asked him.
"You got some food, nobody around here will take my order much less look at me." He answered, sounding quite annoyed, his thin accent making it better. "It's like I'm invisible."
"Pish posh." I scolded. "Watch me do it, don't forget to take notes."
I waved my hand in the air and the scruffy barista came lumbering over while he scratched lumps of fat irritably. There were a few flys buzzing around his face, which I found rather distasteful.
"Can I get a side of chicken?" I inquired politely.
He shrugged. "There only meat we have 'ere is squirrel."
I glanced at Ren, who shrugged.
"Then I'll have some of that." I nodded, he lumbered off again.
"Well that was amazing M'lady, simply brilliant." He blinked, I wasn't sure if he was being sarcastic or not.
"Of course it was, now you go enjoy your squirrel, I've come with an idea to get a little more cash."
"Shoot." He agreed.
"Okay so this dress, is not meant for adventuring in. I want to buy a knife, for protection, and so I can cut part of it away to free up my ankles, we can sell that bit. I mean this isn't cheap fabric right here Ren, it's got to be worth something, it makes this ghastly thing a lot more practical." I set forth.
The barista came back with a small plate of steaming squirrel, Ren held up his fork appreciatively. He dropped it in front of me, but I pushed it towards Ren.
"Ay Madame Rose, I couldn't help but notice you were talkin' to yourself alone over here. If you need some company, don't be afraid to ask." Commented the guy from earlier, I shot him a dirty look.
"Talking to yourself, as if!" Ren snorted. "I'm right here you moron."
The man just blinked at me as if he still expected an answer. I ignored him.
"Ren, something is up with these people." I stewed.
"Galia, do you really think nobody can see me? Or hear me?" He asked, turning his sweet eyes on me.
"Maybe it's part of our curses. Maybe someone would recognize you here. I don't think I know anyone here, they would recognize me in an instant. Whoever put these curses on us did a good job."
He looked down, suddenly looking miserable. "Galia, I've got get back to my family, I don't know why but they need me. I-"
I laid a hand on his arm. "We'll find them, don't you worry."
He smiled weakly. Part of me wishes I could remember anything about my family, maybe I didn't even have one. That would be terrible.
Ren finished his squirrel, we set off into the bazaar, we found a knife, I cut the unwanted laces and frills off my dress, along with the whole bottom parts up to my knees, I could finally see my sandals, they were nice and muddy by now. I kept the knife in a small scabbard on my waist, Ren let me keep it. I braided my obnoxious hair and hid it under an old, black, second hand, three cornered hat, which was very cool. Plus the common folks stoop ogling at me which was tremendous peeve off my shoulders.
We sold the fabric, and bought a sack which we filled with food that wouldn't spoil easily.
We also had no idea what we were going to do next.
"There are no wanted posters, nobody's missing a boy named Ren, or a girl with bright pink hair." I told him.
"We should keep looking, maybe to the next town?" He suggested.
I frowned. "Probably, but we should also be looking for something that might break the curse and give our memories back..."
I trailed off, I was getting that prickly feeling down my spine again. Like someone was watching me.
I glanced around and could have sworn I caught a glimpse of that white deer. Only there were no white deer in the town, that was ridiculous. There were brown deer, but most of them were dead and being stuffed to hang in halls as trophies or eaten as venison.
"What's that?" Ren asked, grabbing my hand, and pulling me towards one of the shops.
I glanced up to see an carved wooden symbol of a hand and an eye. Why was he dragging me towards psychic? Did he want to meddle with witches?
"Ren, no." I said plainly, digging my heels in the ground.
He sighed in frustration. "If there's someone there who can do magic, maybe they can break our curses?"
I bit my lip, still not exactly sure what I was getting myself into.
"Come on M'lady." He begged, dropping down on one knee.
I sighed. "Fine, but at the first sign of trouble we leave."
"Yes!"
I let him enjoy his minor victory, he could be quite persuasive, but his conquests were still not worthy of my time. Messing with witches is dangerous, but I got the feeling so was I. It couldn't hurt to try, could it?
