Part 27
"Can you walk?" asked Ember, in a slightly hushed voice. The new silence of the forest was slightly eerie, causing the hair on Ember's neck to rise slightly. She helped Idril up as Mayabelle plopped down from the tree. Idril looked alright, just a little shaken.
"Yes," she said, gingerly testing her ankle. "It's just a bit sore. I'll be fine." Ember nodded and started carefully back to the campsite. Quickly, she started packing their equipment and putting out their fire.
"If you don't mind," she started, "I think we'll be relocating for tonight." The others nodded, slinging their bags over their backs.
Out of the woods Ember lead the others, keeping quiet and watchful. The crunching gravel and sound of crickets and the occasional hoot of an owl filled the air. It was brisk, chilly and breezy outside, making Ember shiver. She didn't look around, but to her left she could see Mayabelle, head down, plowing ahead as though determined to get as far away from those woods as possible and to the right Idril glancing fearfully around.
Ember felt chilled, not just from the sharp air, but from the encounter with the zombies. She had realized the whole field must have been a graveyard, so why only six zombies? The one who stuck in her mind was the young woman. The others seemed to be malicious or evil creatures, but she was different. She seemed mournful, lost and unaware. What was this girl's story? What set her apart?
Soon, the sky began to fade from ink black to deep blue to violet. The night had passed and the morning had come. Ember glanced back at her friends. Idril had lost the paranoid expression, but her face still looked alert. Ceaser was sniffing around in the tall grass nearby, looking for mice. Mayabelle, on the other hand, housed half closed eyes, drooping limbs and utterly weary features.
"Should we stop?" asked Ember, casting a meaningful glance at Idril. Both nodded without hesitation.
"Where do we go?" mumbled Mayabelle.
"There," Idril pointed to a massive oak tree on one side of the road. The tree's branches were thick and close together, making it look like multiple trees instead of just one. Mayabelle nodded drowsily. Ember quickly decided that a tree would be better than being prone on the ground.
Idril's long limbs posed as a useful tool while climbing, and she quickly slid up the tree. Mayabelle, who was normally a very agile creature, was so drowsy that Idril and Ember had to carry her halfway up the tree. Why, thought Ember as the tried to set Mayabelle on a steady branch and gently strap her in, couldn't all of us be nocturnal?
Soon, Ember discovered a branch for Ceaser and herself, a thick curved branch higher than the resting places of the others. Settling down, she began to pick moss off her horns and tail. Ceaser snuggled close to her, his warm sides providing Ember comfort. Soon, all four were snoring peacefully away from the world.
