Part 26
The zombie stumbled toward them. Idril gasped and stumbled back a few feet as the things she thought were stumps broke open, revealing their dead patrons inside. Five more zombies stumbled through the mist. One had the tall, thick boned build of a dragonborn, another of a half-orc dressed in ragged farmhand clothes. Still another, mournful looking and stumbling slightly was that of a young woman. The others were those of men, limping quickly forward. Mayabelle let out another high pitched fear filled scream. The sound of metal slashing through the air indicated that Ember had drawn her sword.
Idril swung her guitar out from behind her while trying to run backwards. The undead creatures were now trying to make their way over the fence, their sunken faces snarling at her. As she ran, a tree root tripped her up, and now she was scrambling panic stricken back, a guitar hindering her way. A hand gripped the back of her dress. She screamed, but it was only Ember trying to help her stand.
"Get somewhere high up," Ember called, as she darted toward the lone zombie that had finally mastered the obstacle of the fence.
Idril nodded, understanding Ember's sentiment. If these creatures had a difficult time with a mid height fence, surly a large rock would do wonders. A rustle above her told her that Mayabelle had taken to the trees. As Idril ran, she spotted a tall stump. Looking behind her, she saw one of the monsters lurching after her, a large rusted sword swinging dangerously in his hands. She turned sharply around a thick oak tree, only to be met by the mournful woman zombie.
Jumping terrified, Idril swung her guitar, which took off the monsters head. The body crumpled lifelessly before her. Disgustedly, she stepped over it and continued on.
In front of her, she could see Ember, who had already set fire to one of the zombies, filling the air with the smell of burnt flesh and rotten something. Idril wrinkled her nose. Turning slightly to the right, she looked just in time to behold Mayabelle dropping soundlessly onto the head of the half-orc, flipping backwards and taking his head with her. Idril smiled, somewhat sickly.
Then rounding another tree, she suddenly felt this awful unexpected jerking sensation and without warning, she was hanging upside down, the ground spinning below her. She flailed her limbs, but to no avail. She had been trapped in a snare set by the farmer to catch wolves and coyotes. There she hung, bouncing foolishly while below her confused zombies looked for their meal.
Idril dangled around three and a half feet above the creatures. Still she clung to her guitar, but it was useless in such an unfortunate state. Perhaps, she thought to herself, if she sung it would work just as well as the music. So, she began to melodiously chant the words to a freezing spell. She had done this spell on smaller levels before, but never on two fully grown human figures. As she sang, she noticed ice blocks beginning to form around the monsters' ankles, cementing them in place. Then their arms and chests frosted over then, finally, their screeching mouths.
Another thump told her the last body had been toppled, so she called for the other two.
"Mayabelle, Ember, hey I'm up here. Come get me down, please?"
Ember marched over, robes disheveled. Mayabelle came leaping through the trees to sit on a branch next to Idril's head.
"Ember, can you catch her?" she asked. Ember nodded, brushing herself off. In a few minutes, Idril's bonds had been untied and all three were on the ground again, surrounded by peaceful, moonlit woods.
