Chapter One: Autumn's POV

"Autumn come down here! The girls are going to be here any minute!" my mom yelled up the stairs. I ran over to the door and shouted back,

"Ok I'll be right down!" I sprinted across my room over to my bed and grabbed my burgundy colored backpack and swung it over my shoulder. Before I opened the door, I turned around to look at my outfit in my full length mirror one last time. I was wearing a deep red romper with navy detailing around the neckline, a light wash jean jacket, dark brown lace up boots, and my always present necklace with my name in cursive swinging from a gold chain. "Now or never," I said with a small smile. I took one last look at my room before bounding down the stairs towards my kitchen.

"Good morning Mom," I said joyfully.

"Morning honey!" she said with a gasp. "My little girl is so grown up!" she exclaimed after seeing me. She ran over to hug me and kissed the top of my head. I smiled at her and chuckled lightly to myself.

     "Want some coffee?" Mom asked.

"No thanks the girls and I are stopping at Starbucks on our way to school," I replied.

"Isn't your mother's homemade coffee better than the junk they make at those hipster places?" she said with a fake gasp as she put a hand on her heart.

"Oh mom," I said with a roll of my eyes. I slid onto a bar stool at the counter and grabbed my phone from the front pocket of my backpack. I opened snapchat and took a selfie with the dog filter and captioned it "First day of school!!" and posted it to my story.

     *knock knock*

"It's probably Cassie," I told my mom. I walked over to the door and pulled it open and was greeted by Cassie.

     "Hi Autumn!"

"Hey," I said. "Come on in." Cassie followed me in and took a seat at the bar stool.

     "Hi Mrs. Willis!" she exclaimed.

"Good morning Cassie," she replied. "Would you like something to eat?"

"Oh no I'm fine but thanks for the offer." I smiled to myself. Cassie was the most polite person I've ever met.

"I just have to grab my phone charger from upstairs and I'll be ready to go," I said as I started towards the stairs.

"Ok bye!" Cassie called to me. I ran up the stairs as fat as I could and squatted down to pull my charger out of the wall. As I was standing up, I felt something furry brush against me.

"Ahh!" I squealed before realizing that it was my dog, Sadie. I turned around and saw the cutest brown and white Boston terrier puppy panting at my feet. "Awww Sadie I'm gonna miss you while I'm at school!" I said in a baby voice as I picked her up and she yelped up at me. I laughed at the silly noise and began heading downstairs with Sadie in my arms.

"So that's why economically, I think it would be the best choice if the city..." I heard from downstairs. While Cassie was insanely polite, she was also crazy smart. I rolled my eyes at one of my best friends and my mom having a conversation about economics.

"Hey I got the charger," I yelled down the stairs. Both of their heads turned as I said it and Cassie jumped out of her seat as quick as she could.

"Eeeeek!" she shrieked with a terrified look on her face. Her eyes were glued to Sadie, casually lying in my arms.

"Oh sorry I forgot!" I apologized. I leaned over to let Sadie down and she scrambled over to Cassie right away.

"Ahhhhhh!!" she screamed as she started running away from my dog.

"Cassie stop running!" I yelled. "Sadie thinks you're playing a game by running around!" But Cassie didn't stop zooming around the room, so I started chasing after them. Luckily Boston terriers have pretty short legs so she couldn't get very far even though she was pretty fast.

"Get away from me!" I heard Cassie yelp. I ran to catch up to them, but I wasn't fast enough. Cassie had already made it into the bathroom and had locked herself in there. I slowed down and saw Sadie scratching at the bathroom door before she collapsed on the floor in exhaustion. I stepped over her and knocked on the door.

     "Cass?" I said.

     "Yeah?" she stuttered.

"I'm going to put Sadie upstairs and then you can come out."

"Okay." I bent down and picked up the squirming puppy and started heading upstairs. I felt really bad about letting Sadie chase Cassie around like that. Cassie has an insane fear of dogs ever since she was walking her neighbor's dog when she was six and the huge German shepherd was too strong and she fell over and he started pulling her around. She wasn't too badly injured just really scraped up and emotionally scarred for life. I let Sadie down upstairs and scolded her.

"Bad dog! You know better than to chase people around like that!" I yelled. She looked up at me with her signature puppy dog eyes and I felt bad for her too. "Oh you sweet little thing," I said as I reached down to pet her ears one last time before I left for school. I left her lying there and I ran back downstairs to let Cassie know that the coast was clear.

"Cassie you can come out now she is safely upstairs," I shouted. I heard the click of the door being unlocked and soft footsteps. I saw Cassie with her bright blonde hair and her big green eyes full of worry hiding underneath her large glasses.

"I'm sorry Cass I totally forgot," I said quietly. "I'm an idiot."

"No you're not an idiot. You just blanked. No biggie." she replied. But it was a big deal to me. Cassie was the kind of girl who changed what sidewalk she was walking down if there was even the smallest dog near her. I grabbed my backpack and shoved the cord inside the front pouch. Cassie got her things and we headed out the door.

"Bye girls have a great first day at school!" my mom yelled after us. I totally forgot my mom had seen that whole ordeal. Man was I going to get an earful when I get home from school. But right now I had to focus on one thing and one thing only. School. It was my first day as a junior in high school and I was determined to make it a great day. Cassie unlocked the car and I tossed my backpack in the back seat and climbed into the passenger seat. The car roared to life and we started driving in silence. Eventually the stillness of the air got a little too stuffy so Cassie turned the radio on. *Our favorite song, Cheap Thrills by Sia was on. After a while of sitting in the car twiddling my thumbs, I spoke up.

"Hey I really am sorry I seriously shouldn't have done that. I really should know better after knowing you my whole life." I said. Cassie briefly looked at me before looking back at the road.

"I know you're sorry. I shouldn't be icing you out like this. After all it's just a silly little irrational fear."

"Can we just pretend this never happened?" I asked.

"What happened?" she said with a grin. The song Like a G6 came on next and I freaked out.

"Oh my God I love this song!"I exclaimed.

"What?! This song is from like 2010!" Cassie giggled. I laughed along with her but soon we were both jamming out to the song.
