3- Explanation
Ethan saw Sadie's expression, and scooted further away from Antonio and Sadie. She looked angry, and assumed he was about to get slapped in the face. "Whatever you do, don't slap me." he chuckled, leaning back, and crossing his arms over his face.
"Ethan, that's my mother..." she sighed "For one, it would be weird, I look at you as my brother, and two... you're a bit young for her, and three, I don't want to see either one of you get hurt by each other, you're both good people."
"So, you're telling me there's a chance?" he asked, looking at her with a devilish grin.
"OK Lloyd..." Sadie smiled, shaking her head "And the answer is no, there's absolutely no chance."
"Dammit... you really know how to break a man's heart." he smirked.
"There are plenty of other women out there for you, you'll get over it." she says, rolling her eyes.
"Don't you be rolling your eyes at me, you know deep down inside, we would make a great couple." His eyebrows moved up and down fast, then stopped when she gave him a funny look, and crossed her arms. He sat back in his seat laughing, and as much as he would like to have one night with her mom, he had a feeling that it would never happen, knowing Sadie would never allow it. He knew how to push her buttons, and loved her reaction every time.
He then started thinking about the day that he was supposed to marry Melissa, and how to this day, he never got an explanation from her. He hadn't seen her since the day before she left him at the altar, and hoped she wasn't at the party. The last few years their friends threw a Halloween party, she hadn't been to one, why would she go to one now? he thought.
Sadie was amazed when they pulled up to their friends' home, and saw how much effort that was put into decorating for the Halloween party. The outside looked creepy with skeletons, and graves all over, fog was floating through the air, creepy music was playing, and after seeing the outside, she couldn't wait to see what they had done to the inside.
They were greeted at the door by a woman, that had Antonio, and Sadie laughing. She was dressed up as female blow up doll, which caught the attention of Ethan. "Well, well, well.... I've been looking all over for you, how the hell did you escape my closet?"
"Ethan!" Sadie giggled, slapping his arm.
The girl didn't say a word, and Antonio couldn't help but laugh, and shake his head leave it to Ethan he thought. Placing his hand on the small of Sadie's back, he walked her inside, Ethan following behind them. Ethan couldn't help but stare at the woman while walking by her "Maybe later, we can go find a room, and I can put that mouth of yours to good use." he says, while leaning into her ear, before walking away, grinning ear to ear. He happened to recognize the scent on her, but couldn't place it, and looked back at her as he walked away Huh, he thought to himself.
Throughout the night, Ethan was hitting on all the women that allowed him to flirt with them. Sadie happened to be watching him, and face palmed when she overheard Ethan ask one of the girls if they would like to get fingered "Ethan you're being a damn pig." Sadie snapped, pulling him away from a woman that was dressed up as a sexy nurse.
"Calm down woman, I'm just having fun. Why don't you go play with Antonio's cobra, have a couple cocktails, and lighten up." he smiled. He kept trying to talk to the woman who answered the door, and became annoyed when she avoided him every time, he came near her.
Seeing she wouldn't talk to him, his frustrations began to grow, and then it hit him, could that be Melissa? He kept an eye on her, and when she headed towards the back of the house, where nobody was around, he followed her.
"Melissa?" he asked softly, resting his hand on her shoulder as she was entering the bathroom.
He wasn't buying her answer when she shook her head no, and spun her around. He rested his hands on her shoulders, and got close to her face, trying to see through her costume "It's you, isn't it?" he asked, sticking his nose up in the air, and smelling her scent "I know that scent from anywhere, I could smell it earlier, and I knew it smelt familiar."
"Ethan... please leave me alone." she begged, in a soft-spoken voice, trying to get away from his grip.
"No... I'm not leaving until I get an explanation, it's been four years, I deserve to know why." he demanded "Don't you think I'm owed that?"
She looked away from him, knowing she hurt him, and could see he was still hurt by it. She remained quiet, not wanting to look at him, wishing he would go away.
"Look at me... I want to know why..."
"I didn't mean to hurt you." she said quietly, turning her head back towards him. "But we we're just too different, you deserve someone more like you, someone that understands, and enjoys your type of humor, I hated it... you were always embarrassing me."
"Makes absolutely no sense, you knew how I was, and if it bothered you that much, then why say yes when I asked you to marry me? Then for you to humiliate me, by leaving me standing at the alter looking like a complete idiot. That was cold hearted, you could have saved me the embarrassment by talking to me before the wedding, and telling me that the wedding was off."
"I'm sorry Ethan, I was dressed, and ready, but when I stood in front of that mirror thinking about everything, I realized that I couldn't go through with it, and left."
Ethan took a step back; he knew she was lying to him. That day, he was told she was never there, her closest friends couldn't even find her, or get a hold of her.
"If that isn't a lie, then I don't know what is." He placed his hands on his hips, and stared at her. "I don't believe it one bit...not at all."
She gave him a look of guilt, and took a deep breath. "Believe it, please..."
"Tell me... I want to know, there was someone else, wasn't there.... who is he?" he asked, when she looked away. "I'm no fool, and I'm not stupid... so spit it out, it's been long enough."
"You don't know him, and he's my husband now." she said, sounding ashamed.
He gasped in shock, but had a gut feeling, and always hoped it wasn't true. He felt angry, but was also relieved to finally know the truth so he could put it behind him.
"Husband?" he questioned, after he re-thought about what she said. He paused, and looked at her again, feeling disgusted "Never mind, I've heard enough."
Sadie walked around the corner while Ethan, and Melissa were talking, and stopped when she saw the expression on his face. She realized who he was talking to when she saw the two in a heated discussion, and started walking away.
"What did you need Sadie?" Ethan asked, when he saw her.
Sadie turned around, and looked at Ethan "I'm sorry... I didn't mean to interrupt, I was trying to get to the bathroom, but I can wait."
"You can go, our talk here is finished."
Sadie quickly walked past them, not wanting to look at them, and headed into the bathroom. When she came out, she was relieved to see they were gone. She saw Antonio talking to a couple that she didn't recognize, walked over to them, and stood next to him, taking her drink, when he handed it over to her.
The alcohol was starting to kick in, and she was feeling no pain. She looked down and started playing with Antonio's cobra in front of the couple, causing him to turn a little red in the face. He wrapped his arm around Sadie's waist, and introduced her to them. Hearing they were Harlow's friends; she felt a little embarrassed, and covered her face.
"I'm sorry, I never drink... and here I am, drinking, and making a fool out of myself." she giggled, shaking their hands.
"It's alright, I'd be playing with that cobra too if it was my husband's." Gemma responded, giggling.
She leaned into Antonio's ear, and explained to him what she saw, asking for him to go find Ethan, and to make sure that he was alright.
Antonio excused himself, and walked around looking Ethan, finding him, and having a little talk with him. Letting him know that Sadie was right, that he and Melissa never would have lasted, and that it wasn't meant for them to be.
"Yea, yea." Ethan sighed.
"Come on, let's go home and unwind, you can crash at my place." Antonio says, pushing on Ethan's shoulder.
On the way home, Ethan couldn't wait any longer to take his costume off, and took it off inside the limo. "Ahhhhhh. That fucking costume was a pain in the ass. I'll ever wear that one again... I was bumping into everything."
Sadie laid her head onto Antonio's lap, and caressed his leg. She was fighting to keep her eyes open, when the effects of the alcohol started taking control over her. Not long after they got down the road, she passed out.
Antonio couldn't wake up Sadie when they got home, and threw her over his shoulder, waving to Grace as he walked inside. He carefully carried her up the stairs, and laid her onto the bed. He grabbed a t-shirt for her, took her costume off, put the shirt on her, and got her under the sheets. He then changed into his sweats, and t-shirt, and headed downstairs to talk with Grace, and Ethan.
Ethan was talking to Grace when Antonio came back down the stairs, and Antonio had to shake his finger at him, letting him know that he better behave himself around Grace.
"Are you going home tonight, or staying here?" Antonio asked Grace, raising his hands in the air "I'm only asking so I know where to put Ethan."
"We can share a bed, that's no problem." Ethan says, winking at Grace, and causing her to blush.
Antonio lowered his head, and shook it "You're lucky Sadie is asleep."
Grace chuckled, and stuttered when she tried responding to Antonio. "I'm actually on my way out, I was just waiting for you to get Sadie into bed. I just wanted to let you know that the kids were good, and that the girls didn't ask to go driving."
"That's a relief."
Feeling tired, and wanting to get back home, she started walking towards the door. "I'll show myself out... goodnight you two."
"Goodnight, beautiful!" Ethan called out, smiling ear to ear.
Antonio and Ethan headed downstairs and over to the bar. Ethan grabbed some darts, and threw a couple at the dartboard, while Antonio grabbed them some drinks.
"I can't believe that woman." Ethan said sounding upset, as he threw a dart, hitting the bullseye.
"What woman?" Antonio wasn't sure if he was talking about Grace, or Melissa.
"Melissa." he said angrily.
"Oh... her..." Antonio walked over to Ethan, handing him a glass of bourbon.
"She was fucking cheating on me, and the sad thing is... I suspected it when we were together, that was one of the reasons why I proposed to her. I wanted to see what she would say, and when she said yes, all my suspicions went away." He threw another dart, hitting a bullseye again, and sighed when he thought about what she did to him. "Sad part is, I told her that I'm not a fool, or stupid. But man am I ever... I'm a fucking idiot, I can't believe I proposed to her. I should have just asked her from the start."
"She probably would have lied to you then as well." Antonio took the last dart out of Ethan's hand, and threw it at the dartboard "Hey!!! I was trying to get a hat trick there." Ethan yelled out "I could have had it, too."
"Take a drink, and have a breather. Just relax.... nobody liked her anyway, she was always bitchy, and was always giving you dirty looks."
"But I did... I liked her...Fuck! What the fuck was I thinking? And to top it off, she married the fucker."
"I know you better than this Ethan, quit dreading on it, and move on." Antonio poured Ethan another shot, and sighed. "I do have a question for you."
"What's that?"
"Have you talked with Sadie much lately?"
"Just the usual." Ethan squinted his eyebrows, and twisted his lips, curious as to the tone in his voice. He knew that tone, and it was never good "Why?"
Antonio ran his hand through his hair, and walked behind the bar. He crossed his arms, and leaned forward onto the bar. He looked over at the bottle of bourbon, and pinched the bridge of his nose, wondering if he was just imagining things.
"I don't know, I noticed that she's been kind of off lately, I know I haven't been home much, between court proceedings, and the property management issues, she doesn't seem herself." he says, throwing his arms in the air. Frustrated that he can't figure it out.
"Now, if you think she's having an affair, you're wrong. That I know she wouldn't do to you; she doesn't seem like that type of person. Besides, when would she have the time?"
"No... I'm not hinting at that, I would never think that of her, something just isn't right, almost like she's depressed, or... I don't know, maybe it's just me."
"Talk to her, you two have always been able to talk, hell.... I think your relationship with her is far better than the one you had with my sister. Nothing against my sister, but I've seen you with them both, obviously, but had you met Sadie, and Harlow at the same time, I think you would have chosen Sadie right from the start. You two were meant to be, any issues that the two of you are having right now, I know you both will work it out."
"Wow." Antonio said surprised, raising his eyebrows. Amazed at Ethan's words, and what he thought.
"I'm only saying the truth, I know you loved Harlow, and I know that you still do, but your love for Sadie is so much deeper." Ethan raised his shot glass, and tried getting Antonio to clink his glass against his.
"Look at you, I'm here trying to lift your spirits and to encourage you, and now you're the one trying to raise mine." Antonio joked, smiling.
"Like I said, I'm just being honest with you, now let's toast dammit." Ethan grinned. He grabbed the bottle of bourbon, and poured them each a shot, both raising their glasses, and Ethan toasted to Antonio "May all your ups and downs be between the sheets, and between the sheets only."
"Yea no kidding." Antonio chuckled, taking his shot "I just hope nothing is wrong, and that she isn't hiding anything from me."
