15- Saving a life
It's been a little over two months since Harlow passed away, and when Gabriella sked Antonio if Sadie was going to be her new mommy. He thought about her question often, and never responded to her about it, not know what to tell her, without hurting their feelings, or getting them excited for something that wasn't true. He already lied to Ethan, and felt guilty about that, but he couldn't lie to his little girls, especially something like that.
Each day without Harlow had been a challenge for him, he had been trying to go on with life without her, and couldn't stop thinking to himself about how to go on without her. Everything he did, reminded him of her, with her clothes still in the room smelling like her, when he laid in bed, he couldn't sleep from seeing the empty spot next to where he slept, it was becoming too much for him. After eight years of being together, and loving someone so much to where you thought you would be together forever, was killing him more and more each day without her.
Every time he looked at his daughters, all he could see was Harlow, and they were spitting images of her, hurting him even more. He began avoiding them, trying to stop the pain, he even avoided Sadie. Every day he would drive around for hours, go to parks and sit in his vehicle staring off into nowhere, and would even stay at work later just to avoid seeing everyone when he got home.
Antonio also visited her grave nearly every day, after his latest visit with her, he was at his wits end and not thinking clearly, he drove to a sporting goods store, and walked inside looking at various handguns. Seeing one he liked, he showed them his permit to purchase, and purchased the handgun. On his way home, he kept looking over at the gun he had sitting on his passenger seat, wondering when, and where he was going to do it. When he got home, he quickly went into his office avoiding Sadie and the girls.
He placed the handgun in the bottom drawer of his desk, and pulled out pictures of Harlow placing them on top of the desk for him to see. He pulled out a bottle of bourbon, and poured himself a drink. As he sat in his chair with the drink in his hand, he stared at her pictures for the longest time, then closed his eyes remembering when they met, where they met, and all the trips they took together. He began remembering some of their biggest fights, and her last days there on earth with him. He was still hating himself for not being there at the time, and trying to save her life.
Sadie was outside with the girls, and looked at the time, figuring it was time for their nap. She brought them inside and headed upstairs to lay them down.
She went back down the stairs, and was about to pick up their toys when she noticed Antonio's office door was closed. Seeing that it was closed, she knew he was home, and decided to go talk to him, wanting to give Antonio a piece of her mind.
She was fed up with him ignoring his kids, and doing everything possible to never be home. She was surprised he was home, and walked up to the door, taking a deep breath before barging in without knocking.
Her stomach dropped as she opened the door, taking one step in, shocked to see Antonio holding a gun to his head. "Antonio! Stop! What are you doing?" she screamed, running over to him, and trying to carefully pull the gun out of his hand.
Sadie finally got the gun out of his hand, and stepped back away from him, her heart was pounding hard, and her hand was shaking wildly, afraid to drop the gun, and have it go off. "I can't do this anymore." he sobbed, reaching for the gun she was able to get out of his hands.
"You can't do what? You do realize that you have two beautiful girls that lost their mother, and now you want them to lose their father too? What are you thinking?" she yelled. She looked over at Harlow's pictures that were placed in front of him, on his desk.
"Is this really the answer?" she asked loudly, and wide eyed. She grabbed one of Harlow's pictures, and held it in front of him. "Look at her! Is this what she would have wanted?" Sadie snapped. She turned half way and noticed a picture of his little girls on the corner of his desk, she reached over and grabbed the picture, placing it inches away from his face.
"Is this what Harlow wants, for you to give up on them?... Antonio! Think about what you are doing!" she yelled, shoving both pictures in his face. "LOOK AT THEM!" she demanded, when he wouldn't look.
He stood up taking the pictures away from Sadie, setting them down on the desk. His heart was pounding, and his fists pressed down on the desk, he lowered his head fighting back the tears. He felt relieved Sadie walked in when she did, and stopping him from doing something terrible. He thought, maybe it was a sign from Harlow, sending Sadie in his office when she did.
He really didn't want to end his life, but figured it would finally take the pain away for good. As he thought about it, and listening to Sadie yell at him, he knew he was in the wrong, and that he needed to snap out of the state of mind that he was in.
He turned to look at Sadie, and looked directly into her eyes. He saw terror and frustration in her eyes, and his heart started beating faster while looking at her. Without even thinking, he reached his arm round her waist and pulled her to him, using his other hand to cup the back of her head, he quickly pressed his lips against hers, kissing her hard. When she responded to his kiss, their kiss turned into a heated passionate kiss. He was out of breath and had to pull away. He leaned his head back to look at her, surprised she didn't resist him, and expected her to push him away, or slap him across the face.
She didn't say anything, and just looked at him. She was surprised, and shocked about him kissing her, and thought the kiss was nice. The way he kissed her, had her wanting more. He leaned in for another kiss, and while she kissed him back, it sent warm sensations throughout his body, as well as hers. His hands started roaming her back, pressing her tightly against him, exciting her more. The way he was kissing her, and how he was touching her, had her inner core throbbing with desire, and feeling wet below. She tightly wrapped her arms around him, kissing him with more urgency, and moaning as she felt the temperature rise inside her "Sadie." He moaned into her mouth.
He pulled away and cupped the sides of her face, and looked in her eyes. "WOW...." he said in amazement, and taking a deep breath. He felt like a whole different person after the kiss, and started thinking it was wrong of him to kiss her. "I'm so sorry, I probably shouldn't have kissed you like that... it just felt so right." he whispered, wiping her bottom lip softly with his thumb. He noticed her chest rising up and down fast, and looked back into her eyes. "To be honest, I expected a slap across the face."
She smiled at him, and wasn't sure what to say. She enjoyed the way his lips were pressed against hers, but she herself was unsure if it was right of them to kiss. "Promise me you'll get rid of that thing." she urged, pointing at the gun she set down on the desk. "And promise me, that you'll never think about doing anything like that ever again." she says, grabbing a fist full of his shirt, and pulling him to her while staring into his eyes.
"I'm sorry, I know that was stupid of me. It's just that every time I look at the girls, I see Harlow, and it kills me, it hurts. I've been feeling like I cannot go on without her." he said, sounding depressed.
"And that's a bad thing that they look like her? She gave you two precious gifts... don't ever take them for granted. They deserve you in their life, and I'm being serious when I say this, don't be doing anything stupid like that ever again, and I'll keep saying it over and over too, just to get it in your head." she says, picking up the gun, and emptying out all the ammo onto the desk. She made sure the gun was empty, and set it down on the desk, while grabbing all the ammo.
She looked back over to him, and pointed. "Don't ever say you can't live without Harlow, you can, and you will. Especially for Gabriella and Isabella, they can't lose both their parents, they're way too young." she snapped.
"Easier said than done." he spoke lowly, running his hands through his hair.
After sharing a kiss with him, she was nervous to tell him the other reason why she came into the room to see him. "I also came in here to let you know that I do have a date later today."
"A date?" he questioned surprised, looking as if he just lost his best friend.
"Yes I do, is that not OK? We're just going to a movie, and I told him it would have to be an early one so I could get back and put the girls to bed."
"What if I hadn't been around, what were you going to do with them?"
"I would have brought them with, or I would have kept calling you until you answered, insisting that you be here for your kids, and spend time with them. Something in which you've been neglecting, since she left."
"How did you even have time to find a date, when you haven't gone anywhere? What's his name?" he questioned, feeling like a heel. He walked over to the window and looked out, feeling like a dumbass for kissing her.
"His name is Ethan."
Antonio's heart dropped when he heard his name, and turned around quickly. "Ethan? As in my brother in law Ethan?" he asked surprised. He felt upset with himself when he remembered he told Ethan that she wasn't single.
"Yes, Harlow's brother... he has been coming here almost every day for almost two months to see and play with the kids."
"What? Why haven't you said anything?"
"Probably because you haven't been around, if you would have been here you would have known." she said, sounding bitter. She noticed how his demeanor changed when she mentioned she had a date, and more so after saying she had a date with Ethan. "Let me ask you this too... Why did you tell him that I wasn't single?" she asked, looking curious. Wondering what his answer would be to that, knowing damn well she was very single.
He placed his hands on his hips, and looked down at his feet. "I don't even know why, it just came out when he asked me." he said quietly, feeling embarrassed.
Seeing Antonio's reaction, she was second guessing going on the date with Ethan. "Do you not want me to go?" she asked, walking up to him. She curled her finger under his chin, and turned his head, making him look at her. She nodded her head when he didn't respond, trying to study his face "Is that a no?"
"I guess... I don't really want you to go, but you deserve to go out, so go." he says quietly, moving her hand away from his chin.
"If you don't want me to go, I won't go."
"Just go, go out and have some fun, you deserve it. Especially how I've been lately, you need a break too."
Sadie left his office quietly, hoping he would have told her no.
While walking away she thought about the kiss they shared, and started tracing her lips with a smile. She liked the way he kissed her, and liked the way his kiss made her feel inside. She hadn't felt feelings like that before, and loved it.
Sadie was down in her room getting ready to leave, when the doorbell rang. When nobody answered, it rang again. Antonio finally answered the door, giving Ethan a disappointed look. He was pissed at him for asking her out on a date.
"Well it's about time you're home." Ethan says, surprised to see him, and reached for his hand to shake. "Can we talk for a minute, while I wait for Sadie?"
Antonio didn't say anything, and turned his head, looking behind him to see if Sadie was coming. He walked outside when he didn't see her, shutting the door behind him. They walked and stood by Ethan's white SUV.
"Are you OK?"
"Yea... yea I'm fine." Antonio said disappointed, looking away from Ethan. He had a hard time looking at him, he felt Ethan was taking Sadie away from him. He knew she wasn't his, and knew he needed to stop acting like she was.
Ethan looked at him sincerely. "The reason I ask, is because Sadie says you haven't really been home since Harlow passed away, and you have been avoiding Gabriella and Isabella."
"Don't worry about it, I've got it under control." Antonio snapped.
"Well if you need anything, you know you can call me, just remember, I lost her too."
Antonio wanted to say something to him, but Sadie had come out and looked at the both of them. She gave a heartfelt look at Antonio, waiting for him to tell her not to go.
"Hello there, beautiful lady." Ethan says, pulling Sadie over to him, and placing a kiss on her lips. She wasn't sure if she liked his lips against hers, it didn't feel right, and she didn't feel any sparks like she did with Antonio. She placed her hands on each side of Ethan's neck, kissing him more, trying to see if she could get any sparks to fly.
When she didn't feel anything from the kiss, she pulled away from him. She felt nothing, feeling as if she were kissing her brother. She saw how Ethan was smiling at her, and gave him a smirk. She could see he enjoyed the kiss, and felt guilty for even trying to kiss him. She sighed and looked at Antonio.
"Antonio?" she asked, worried when she saw him staring off into the sky, not saying a word.
