Chapter 40 Stick in the ass lawyer

Worry shot through me as I heard those words. The one thing we were trying to avoid was about to happen and only God knows where that could take Taehyung. Nether the less, my boyfriend stood up with confidence and treaded to the front podium.

"Do you swear to tell the truth and only the truth?" The officer rang beside him.

Our eyes met, a soft and sturdy gaze before he tore away, "I swear."

Now administrator Kim's lawyer approached Taehyung, his brown dress shoes clicking obnoxiously on the tile floor. He fixed his tie with a low gaze as Taehyung gazed back forty times as dangerous.

"Mr. Kim, let's start from the beginning shall we? When you boarded that plane from California to South Korea, what were your intentions from the very first moment you saw y/n?"

"My intentions were to get to know her." Taehyung let out.

An eyebrow raised on the lawyer's face, unamused. "Be specific please, this is the court room boy."

The way he spat the word "boy" burned a fiery hell in the iris of my eyes. They were trying to trap him, bring him down along with the administrator's sins.

"Specifically," Taehyung grit his teeth, "My father forced me, blackmailed me, into trying to impregnate y/n." Obviously, he had the same fire within.

"So your very first intentions from the beginning were to impregnate the woman?" The lawyer completely ignored the first part of Taehyung's testimony, focusing on his accusing evidence.

"Yes." He clicked his impatient fingers against the brown mahogany of a podium.

"Alright, let's speed up our timeline, where were you when the fire started?"

"The business and administration building."

The lawyer looked up around the room, raising his eyebrows at that statement, "And when you saw y/n being chased down by her murderer, what did you do?"

"I attempted to save her, I fought, bit, punched, kicked— anything as they held me back." Taehyung's eyes slid over to me, regret plastered on his facial features.

"Interesting," the stick in the ass lawyer paced to the right of the judge, pondering deeply about his next words, "Are you telling me you witnessed an attempted murder and didn't tell authorities?"

My blood ran cold as I heard those words, I knew exactly where he was taking this and I didn't like it.

"Well—" a moment of silence as Taehyung realized the corner he was backed up into, "Yes, but there's a reason for that."

"There's a reason for why you didn't mention an attempted murder to the authorities? Ladies and gentlemen! Do you see who we are dealing with here?"

"I didn't have any evidence since I was led to believe that y/n died in the fire! I would only incriminate myself!" Taehyung shot back, trying his hardest to drive the questioning to his favor.

"Incriminate? You mean to say there's evidence of criminal acts?" The lawyer sneered while Taehyung rolled his eyes, "Let me tell you what happened, YOU started the fire. YOU attempted to murder miss y/n. And YOU tried to hide it."

"Oh that's bullshit," Taehyung scoffed, weakly throwing his hands in the air, "I have multiple witnesses that can attest to seeing me being held back in front of the building by multiple firefighters while I attempted to go in and save her myself."

"Very true." The lawyer paced back towards Taehyung, "And do you know why you were trying to save her?"

"Because I love her!"

"BECAUSE YOU WERE GUILTY!" The only sound you could hear was silence in the court room as the lawyer's words sunk in. Why were they so heavy compared to the truth? Why were his words so compelling even without proper evidence?

Hot tears streamed down my face as I looked at Taehyung's defeated eyes. The fire that burned so bright just minutes ago had suddenly turned to gloom darkness. Things became surreal as I felt the only light of hope start to flicker off in my chest.

I couldn't give up. I couldn't. Not yet. Not now.

"That— that's not true—" I spoke up, a cracked voice coming out, but nether the less still the loudest thing in the room, "It's not true. It's not true."

Before the judge could say something to keep me quiet, the lawyer turned towards me with a sparkle of delight in his eyes, "It's not? Then let's bring y/n's doctor to the podium."

My doctor? What does he have to do with this?

Taehyung had got up from the witness podium and in it's place sat my doctor that had treated me for all my wounds after that hell of a fire.

"Hello doctor, I appreciate you taking time out of your vital day to come here today." The lawyer started buttering him up already, sugar coating his words in his favor.

"My pleasure..." the doctor responded in a confused manner.

"Just a few questions for you doctor, when y/n was brought to your ward that day, did she by any chance have a head injury?"

"Yes, she did."

The lawyer snapped his fingers with an epiphany, "Is it possible that y/n could forget certain details due to the head injury?"

A moment of silence as the doctor looked from me to the lawyer, "Yes it is possible... The loss of memory from the moment of a traumatic brain injury onward is called post-traumatic amnesia. It can last from a few minutes to several weeks or months, depending on the severity of brain injury."

"Interesting..." the smiling lawyer turned towards the crowd, obviously proud of his random fun fact that gave no evidence to his case, "Are we really going to base an attempted murder on the memories of a little girl with post-traumatic amnesia?"

I growled under my breath, fighting the urge to fly up from my seat and give him a piece of my brain injury. Taehyung put his hand on my thigh, signaling for me to calm down, but I could see he too was burning with fury.

Ms. Moon quickly picked up one of her clip boards and leafed through it quickly, licking her fingers as she desperately searched in and out of the pages in a sweat.

"We would also like to question the doctor!" My lawyer stood up hastily, fixing her pencil skirt and grabbing a few wrinkled papers in hand.

We would?

"Guys!" She whispered in a hurry, "I know how to win this case!"
