Chapter 35 Escapé
Today was the day.
I had only one shot. One chance.
After months of therapy and healing I was finally able to walk on my own without any help from the nurses. And today I was getting my rock hard casts off allowing freedom and flexibility when it came to means of escape.
"Hello y/n! Ready to get your casts off? The doctor walked in along with three other of my designated nurses.
"Hell yea."
My eyes fell onto the cart they pulled into my room that had all of their ready tools atop. As expected the two tier cart had a white blanket on top that enabled someone small and light to hide perfectly along with the rest of the garbage inside.
"So.. ready..."
"I like your enthusiasm! The X-rays we took yesterday show your bones are in perfect health. Better to take them off now before you get an infection under your casts."
I nodded as the doctor took a hold of my leg, motioning for the nurses to plug in and hand him his tools. As I looked around the room, I realized that I couldn't possibly fool four people, two was even too much. I needed one person in the room.
One doctor.
No, one nurse.
I knew that technically the doctor only needed one pair of helping hands for the removal, so it was time to become an actor.
Under the covers I began to pinch myself, speeding up my heart rate from the pain I was putting myself through. The beeping machine sped up, grabbing the doctor's attention before he started the procedure.
"Are you alright? Are you uncomfortable?"
"I'm sorry.. I just... there's um, a lot more people than usual and I—"
"Ah I understand," the doctor cut me off. "I think I'll need only one nurse in the meantime. Thank you."
I watched as two exited the premises and I felt one baby step closer to freedom outside this room. I let go of my aching skin, mentally cursing at myself for pulling through.
The doctor had finally sawed off all of my casts and lotion was applied to my thin dry skin. "Alright y/n that's all I'm doing for today. See you tomorrow!" And the doctor left, leaving me alone in the room with the silent, working nurse. She placed all of the broken casts in the garbage under the covered cart and began driving it towards the door.
Here goes nothing.
"Is umm... the sink water drinkable?"
She curved her eyebrows, stopping the cart and tilting her head in confusion. "I don't believe so... if you're thirsty I can bring you a water bottle?"
I nodded my head quickly, "Yes that would be lovely, I'm honestly dying." She smiled, and began to push the cart once more.
No! No! No! No! No! No! My escape!
"Um, how long will it take?"
She stopped again at my question, pondering and measuring time."I'd say about ten minutes."
Perfect. Now I had the perfect excuse.
"Ten minutes? I'll just go drink from the sink then." I began standing up from my bed, showing her that I really meant to do just that.
I could see her break into a sweat and she right away let go of the cart nervously, "No! Please wait! I'll be back in a couple of seconds!" And she ran out the door, leaving behind the cart just as I had perfectly planned.
I ran into the bathroom and set my new phone that Ms. Moon gifted me with to play the audio I had recorded earlier today. I prayed that she wouldn't actually walk in and closed the door to the bathroom, leaving the lights obviously on giving the "In use" illusion.
Just as I had managed to sit comfortably inside the cart, I heard her run back in heaving as if she had just run a marathon.
"Miss! Miss?" I felt the vibrations of her steps walk past me as she walked over to the bathroom door. "Miss? Oh please don't drink the faucet water, it's not properly filtered for drinking."
A couple of awkward seconds went by and my voice from the audio finally began talking, "Thank you for the water! Please leave it on my table. I'm just using the bathroom."
I could hear her set the water bottle down next to my bed side and her calm steps began pushing the cart out the door.
This is it! I'm finally leaving!
I stuck my tongue out at the guard standing outside my door who watched the nurse slowly push down the hallways. Eventually she left the cart in a room along with many other carts and tools. After deciding the coast was clear I left the room, adrenaline pumping through my veins. Awkwardly, I walked down the hallway barefooted as doctors and nurses gave me the suspicious eye.
I needed to change and fast before anyone started asking any questions of a wandering patient. I quickly headed over to the lost and found and happily dressed myself in a black bucket hat, plain white t-shirt that had a decorative pink stain, and a pair of jeans that were much too big on me. Luckily, I had found a pair of old boyish sneakers that were just about my size.
On my way out, I grabbed a face mask and finally stepped onto the grass where freedom rang in the windy air. I hadn't anticipated for it to be this chilly, but no matter what weather it was, the chains I felt that held me down for so long we're finally off.
I began exploring the streets, winding down the roads, and remembering old memories. I passed the grocery store that Taehyung and I had visited with Jung-min and a smile was brought to my face. I passed by the mall where we had somehow decided to buy the dark purple lingerie just for the heck of it. And finally, I made it to the bar, remembering that stupid drinking game with him and losing my sense of reality as I took shot after shot after shot. I couldn't help it. My stomach twisted and turned, fighting the urge to admit that I had good memories with him.
My smile was wiped off my grinning cheeks the moment I saw a familiar face.
No.
Not just one.
Eight familiar faces.
