Chapter 33 No Pain no Gain
Y/N POV:
I lamely watched the fire spread closer to me, like an animal it crawled as if I was prey, waiting for my doom. But what could I do? Where would I run?
Don't get me wrong, I was terrified, terrified beyond belief, but a sort of calmness washed over me once I realized that all my pain and misery would soon be over.
I coughed, exerting my chest as smoke filled my lungs. My eyes became even more dry than what I thought possible and I knew it was too late for the fire sprinklers to save anyone at this point. The blazing fire in front of me multiplied with every passing second and things were starting to get a little too hot for comfort
My thoughts dashed around between Taehyung, the boys, and Lisa. Realization crossed over me and I understood that I would miss them.
Dearly.
Should I at least try to survive?
Entertaining the thought of survival brought me into a fit of laughter, but seriously, it's hot.
Sweat was now dripping from my forehead and if I didn't know any better I would say the sprinklers turned on because I was sitting in a pool of trickling, hot sweat. With a heavy sigh, I examined the cloth wrapped around my hands. If I wanted to survive, I needed to untie these and quick.
My eyes darted to the cloth and back to the fire again before I made my decision. I needed to burn it off.
With a subtle count and short prayer, I brought my hands to the fire, a gasp escaped my lungs and a blood curdling scream followed as the heat enveloped my wrists.
I took it out, purely from pain and examined the cloth as I bit back my tears. My hands were now gnashed in red, almost a third degree burn since it wasn't very direct, but my plan had worked.
The weak cloth had taken damage and I used the rest of my strength to rip it apart. I screamed in pain at the amount of exertion I just put on my fresh wounds, but it was off and my hands, free.
The wall. The wall was on fire.
Every single second in my position felt like an eternity, and with every minute I saw the fire overcome more and more items in the room until it finally reached the walls itself.
Turning my attention to my ankles, I stood up and bounced to a table behind me, but the amount of smoke in the air at this point was going to choke me to death.
And I was really dizzy now.
I dropped to the floor again, this time dragging myself across the hardwood and covering my nose and mouth with my shirt. There's no way I'll make it out, no way. I had already lost all sense of direction and the fire had started to corner me victoriously.
My hands fished around and my arms were getting tired dragging my entire body without my leg's accomplice. The amount of oxygen I was losing was exponential, and the world almost spun in circles around me.
A wall. The last wall. The last wall that wasn't burnt to a crisp. And my hands just touched it.
I picked myself up again, this time searching for a doorknob or a window while bouncing around because of that cloth around my ankles. My fingertips raked across the wall in desperate search of anything exit worthy.
And then I felt it.
Glass?
No.
A window.
I could feel the fire behind, sneaking up on me quicker and quicker. Picking up a heavy item near the window, I threw it at the glass. Shreds of sharp blades fell outside and a couple still left hanging on weakly to the window.
The fire! The fire!
I could feel my back now singeing in pain as the hell attempted to overtake my soul.
The world spun again and now I knew I had to jump. I was only on the second floor but still quite a ways away from a safe landing. My eyes shot up to the tree that stretched it's long branches towards the window.
Could I?
Doesn't matter.
I stood on the window seal, brain mixing up altitudes at this point and lungs gasping for oxygen. I could feel something sharp graze my body in a few areas, but there was no pain.
No pain at all when I leaped up towards the tree branch. No pain at all when my wounded, burnt hands gripped the rugged branch. No pain at all when my weight slipped between my fingertips, scratching up my hands further. No pain at all as I watched the branch getting smaller and smaller above me.
No pain at all when I hit the floor, darkness covering my vision.
No pain at all.

*Four hours later*
"Sir, I've investigated the area with my team, although there isn't much left from the fire. The most damage seems to be made around the electronics where numerous extension cords lie." The younger walked alongside his superior as they examined the outside of the building.
"Did they find out who pulled the fire alarm?"
"No sir." The firefighter responded quickly.
Silence hung in the air as they stopped just around the corner of the building. Tall green grass and a tree staking its territory, coldly disinviting human steps onto their lands.
"And no one wants to come forward?" The superior knitted his eyebrows together, thinking deeply about the string of events.
"Not willingly."
Again silence.
It was almost scary how peaceful it had become after the nightmare that had happened just a few hours ago. The wind picked up, trying to blow away memories of the two men that stood side by side, looking at the building sorrowfully.
"Sir?" The superior hummed in response, "When I was inside... I heard a girl scream, but when I looked for her, I didn't find a single soul inside." The boy fidgeted with his firefighter's jacket before continuing, "Do you think there was a girl in there? Or was I imagining a fire spirit." The latter laughed, eyes becoming happy crescents once he heard the words "fire spirit."
"I have reason to believe that you breathed in too much carbon dioxide." The two laughed together, smelling the smokey air that the wind was still desperately trying to hide.
"Hey do you see that?" The superior spoke, peering upwards at the charcoal colored building, "That window, is it broken?" They both looked up, walking towards the window and nearing the wise old tree at the side of the building.
"That's odd.. Can fires really do tha--"
Horror fell between the two as their gaze fell to their feet.
A girl.
She had blistering burns all over her and blood splattering her clothes like dark red paint. A leg was obviously broken and a horrific scene covered her ghastly hands. But most of all what brought chills through their spines was the dirty cloth that was tightly wrapped around her ankles.
"Th--this was on pur--purpose.." The younger admitted, kneeling down next to her in a hurry. His fingers pressed straight on her neck where he patiently waited to feel a heartbeat.
"Anything?" The superior questioned, hands diving for his phone to call for help.
"No... Well- Maybe?... Yes! She's still here! Call an ambulance!" His wide eyes looked up to his superior hopefully.
On the tip of his fingers, the young firefighter felt small, trembling heartbeats fighting for life.
