The Blind Bandit
Aya's POV
"It's pricey... but I really do like it."
Sokka is the worst at making decisions. He can never make up his mind especially when it comes to shopping. He's worst then Katara and me.
"Then you should get it, you deserve something nice." Katara suggested.
The item Sokka was looking at was a green bag that was fancier then usually. It was a beautiful bag, but it probably won't give us any use in the future and just be a decoration.
"I do, don't I?" Sokka questioned himself. I gave my brother a bored expression from my spot on the floor. "But no, it's too expensive. I shouldn't."
"All right, then don't." Katara remarked.
Katara begins to leave and Aang and I follow her. Bubbles trailed behind me for a bit before she crawled onto my back.
"You know what? I'm gonna get it!" Sokka enthusiastically smiled and goes back to the back. The three of us wait for Sokka to return and this man gets our attention.
"Psst, psst. Hey, you kids like earthbending?" He asked, showing us a flyer. "You like throwing rocks? Then check out Master Yu's Earthbending Academy."
He handed a flyer to Aang before leaving.
"Look, there's a coupon on the back." Aang pointed out, turning it over. "The first lesson is free."
"Who knows? This Master Yu could be the earthbending teacher you've been looking for." Katara mentioned before Sokka returns with the bag.
——
Aang went to go take the class from Master Yu and Katara, Sokka, and I patiently waited for the class to finish.
The class finished soon after that and Aang was unsure about the class.
"Ehh, he's not the one." Aang told us and beats his ear to cause sand to fall out.
"I think the Boulder's going to win back the belt at Earth Rumble VI." An older student spoke and we looked at the two boys walking by.
"He's going to have to fight his way through the best earthbenders in the world to get a shot at the champ." His friend replied. Aang liked hearing this and went up to them.
"Excuse me, but where is this earthbending tournament, exactly?" Aang asks the two boys.
"It's on the island of Noneya... "Noneya" business!" The first boy teased and I glared at him.
Excuse me?
They both start to laugh and walk away. Sokka joins in but Katara and I continue to glare at the boys.
I would like to take my daggers and put them in their eye balls.
"Oh, I got to remember that one!" Sokka laughs.
I went up to Aang and comforted him.
"I'll take care of this." Katara told Aang consolingly before running after the boys. "Hey, strong guys! Wait up!"
Sokka looks at his new bag. "What was I thinking? I don't need a new bag! Why did you let me buy this?"
He placed the bag down and folded his arms angrily. Momo hops into the bag and closes his eyes.
Karate comes back. "Ready to find an earthbending teacher? Because we're going to Earth Rumble VI!"
"How'd you get them to tell you?" Aang asked her.
She either threatened them or froze them against a wall. Katara can be scary when you hurt or insult her family.
"Oh, a girl has her ways."
——
That night we went to Earth Rumble VI. The arena was what I imagined it would be. A rectangle arena was in the center with seats surrounding the rectangle.
Nobody was sitting in the front so we took front two seats.
"Hey, front row seats! I wonder why no one else is sitting here." Aang spoke as we sat down and right then a large boulder smashes into the seats nearby.
We stood up alarmed by the boulder.
"Guess that's why." I mentioned.
The crowd begin to cheer and we turned to see a man raising a platform with his earthbending. He was probably the host of the event. He brings the platform down seconds later.
"Welcome to Earth Rumble VI!" He announced. "I am your host, Xin Fu!"
I heard Katara sigh at this. "This is just going to be a bunch of guys chucking rocks at each other, isn't it?"
"What else did you except?" I asked her and she gave me an bored expression.
"That's what I paid for!" Sokka said happily.
"The rules are simple. Just knock the other guy out of the ring, and you win!" Xin Fu explained before earthbending himself out of the ring. A bell rings. "Round one: The Boulder vs. The Big Bad Hippo!"
A muscular man raises his arms and the audience cheers. A bigger, more overweight man roars to show his four teeth that are left in his mouth.
"Listen up, Hippo!" The Boulder spat. "You may be big, but you ain't bad! The Boulder's gonna win this in a landslide!"
"Hippo mad!" Hippo said and raises his arms in anger and slams his foot down. Bubbles cowers back and I cover her eyes for her.
The Boulder fires three rocks at the Hippo but he does not move and catches a piece in his mouth. He chews it and spits it out. The Hippo begins to jump up and down making the arena shake and the Boulder to lose his balance.
"Unbelievable, ladies and gentlemen! The Hippo is rocking the boat!"
The Boulder manages to save himself from falling off the edge. He grabs the platform he formed and chucks it at the Hippo, who is celebrating and was oblivious to the Boulder's move. The Boulder raises the Hippo up into the air by using a part of the arena and tossed him off the side of the arena.
"The Boulder wins!"
The crowd erupts in cheers.
"How about the Boulder?" Katara asks. "He's got some good moves."
"I don't know. Bumi said I need a teacher who listens to the earth. He's just listening to his big muscles." Aang shrugs. "What do you think, Aya and Sokka?"
"He seems to egotistical to be a teacher." I mentioned and looked at my brother who was cheering loudly.
"Next match... The Boulder versus Fire Nation Man!"
The crowd boos at the incoming Fire Nation man who was waving the Fire Nation flag proudly.
"Please, to rise for Fire Nation national anthem." The Fire Nation man begins to sing. "Fire Lord, my flame burns for thee!"
The crowd boos and throws rocks at the man.
"Go back the Fire Nation!" Sokka yells and his rock hits the man in the head.
I don't like the Fire Nation but that was a little rude.
The Boulder suddenly sinks the Fire Nation man into the floor. He sends himself up into the air with a Earth platform and the Fire Nation man pleads for mercy.
"No! No, please!"
The Boulder leaps off and lands knees first into the ground and catapults the Fire Nation man out of the arena.
The man lands right where the boulder that almost hit us was and Sokka cheers at this.
"Yeah! Wooo! The Boulder knows how to put the 'hurt' in the dirt!" Sokka cheered.
After a small intermission, the battles continued and the Boulder continued to win. None of the other fighters stood a chance against that egotistical bender and it bothered me.
"Now, the moment you've all been waiting for." Xin Fu announced. The last battle was about to begin and I was actually excited for it. A spotlight shined on Xin Fu as he spoke. "The Boulder versus your champion... The Blind Bandit!"
On the other side, stood a young a girl with short black hair and earthbending clothes. She raises her championship belt proudly.
The girl was short, shorter then me surprisingly, and she looked about the age of Aang and me. She was young and by her name... blind???
The assistants removed her cape and belt.
"She can't really be blind. It's just part of her character, right?" Katara asked and I looked closer. Her green eyes were milky and different from a normal human's eyes.
"I think she is." Aang said and I nodded.
"Her eyes are different." I pointed out.
"I think she is...GOING DOWN!" Sokka yelled, throwing his hands down.
Aang and I leaned back due to Sokka's movements and Bubbles and Momo hid in his bag together.
"The Boulder feels conflicted about fighting a young, blind girl." The Boulder spoke.
The Boulder should stop speaking in the third person; It's stupid.
"Sounds to me like you're scared, Boulder!" The Blind Bandit taunted and I giggled.
She has a sense of humor. I like it.
The Boulder's face changes into a stunned one. "The Boulder's over his conflicted feelings and now he's ready to bury you in a rock-alanche!"
"Whenever you're ready, the Pebble!" The girl mocked and laughed loudly.
"It's on!" The Boulder declared.
Despite his bravado, he was sweating nervously. Seconds later, the Boulder takes a large step and something in the Blind Bandit changed, she listened to his movement and moved forward with her arms out. The Boulder let out a battle cry and lifted his foot up and the the Bandit kicks the ground with her heel. A shock wave churns up the ground and goes toward the direction of the Boulder.
My eyes followed the shock wave until it reached the Boulder who wasn't ready for the move and steps on the wave of Earth. His foot slides out into a perfect split and my lips parted in shock.
It's almost like she knew what he was doing ahead of time.
The Boulder let out a loud, painful cry.
"Ooooooh!"
The Bandit continues and makes a chopping motion with her hand and creates three stalagmites from the ground. The Boulder gets hit from behind and this ejects him from the ring and slams right into the wall.
"Your winner, and still the champion! The Blind Bandit!"
The girl smirks satisfied and raises her fist in the air, proudly.
Sokka cries out as the crowd cheers.
"That was amazing." I smiled.
"How did she do that?" Katara asked with shock.
"She waited... and listened." Aang told us.
Xin Fu hopped off his tower to meet with the Blind Bandit.
"To make things a little more interesting, I'm offering up this sack of gold pieces to anyone who can defeat the Blind Bandit." Xin Fu announced, holding up a sack of gold pieces.
The crowd fell silent at this.
"What? No one dares to face her?"
"I will!"
A familiar voice echoed throughout the arena and I noticed Aang entering the ring.
I blinked a few times before realizing that Aang had left. I didn't even notice that he had walked away due to the fact that I was so engrossed in the battle.
Xin Fu left the ring to leave them to their devices and fight.
"Go Aang! Avenge the Boulder." Sokka yelled.
I was nervous for my Avatar friend. That girl is very talented and knows your every move.
"Do people really want to see two little girls fighting out here?" The Blind Bandit teased.
"Ooooh!"
Aang puts his hands ups. "I don't really want to fight you. I want to talk to you."
"Boo! No talking!" Sokka called and Katara and I whacked his arms.
"Don't say that." I glared.
"Don't 'boo' at him." Katara berated.
The Bandit sends a shock wave to Aang who swiftly dodges it and jumps in the air. The girl looked around confused not being able to sense his movement anymore. Aang lands softly on the ground and she turns to face him.
"Somebody's a little light on his feet! What's your fighting name: the Fancy Dancer?" She taunted and Aang shrugged with a sheepish grin.
The girl earthbends a platform below Aang's feet who flips over her head and she was confused again. She looks around carefully for him.
Aang appears behind her and she smirks.
"Please wait!" Aang begged.
"There you are!" She exclaims and sends a large boulder his way but he leaps above it and airbends the rock away. His airbending sends her flying back and she yelps out as she slides off the ring.
This shocked the whole arena and it was silent once again.
My siblings and I shared a look of happiness and shock. The crowd suddenly erupted into cheers and the three of us plus Bubbles and Momo go to the ring to take the reward.
We met up with Aang and he seemed devastated. He didn't want to defeat her he wanted to talk to her.
Sokka happily receives the prize and belt.
"Way to go, champ!" Sokka praises a sorrowful Avatar.
I was happy we got the reward but I hated seeing Aang upset.
——
The next day, we were walking through the town. Sokka was proudly wearing the belt that Aang won. Aang wanted to find the Blind Bandit so he could talk to her, but we had no idea where she lived.
"I've got to admit, now I'm really glad I bought this bag. It matches the belt, perfectly." Sokka mentioned and I gave him a look of boredom.
"Good for you."
"That is a big relief." Katara added, sarcastically.
"If we want to find the Blind Bandit, the Earthbending Academy is a great place to start." Aang spoke up as we approached the Earthbending Academy.
Inside, we saw the two boys from yesterday that teased Aang.
"Oh great, you again." One of them complained and Katara glares at them.
They cower back in few.
"Ahhh!"
"Yeah, I didn't think so." Katara glares.
"Nicely done." Sokka praised.
"Hey! You're that kid who beat the Blind Bandit!" The other boy pointed out, going over to Aang.
"We need to talk to her. Do you guys know where she lives?" I asked them, nicely.
"The Blind Bandit's a mystery. She shows up to fight, then disappears." The first boy explained to us in a dramatic voice.
Katara lays a hand on my shoulder. "Let me handle this." Katara steps forward in an angry matter. "You're not telling us everything!"
The boy holds up his hands defensively. "No, no, I-I swear it's true. No one knows where she goes, or who she really is."
"That's because we're asking about the wrong person. In my vision, I saw a girl, in a white dress, with a pet flying boar. Know anybody like that?" Aang questioned. The boy with brown hair hides behind his friend.
"Well, a flying boar is the symbol of the Beifong family. They're the richest people in town. Probably the whole world." The first boy informed us.
"Yeah, but they don't have a daughter." The scared boy popped out from behind his friend.
"A flying boar is good enough for me. Let's check it out." Aang suggested before running out.
"Yeah, you better leave." The first boy scowled.
"Hey, I got my eye on you." Katara warned before leaving.
"Water Tribe." Sokka whispered before it was just me.
"I will hurt you." I threatened pointing my daggers at the boys whose eyes widened in fear.
I followed the others out after that.
——
Aang, Katara, Sokka, and I found a lovely walled estate. It looked better then any house in the town and had a beautiful garden.
We were hiding from the guards that were present and looked at the front gate. There was a crest on top of the gate with a picture of a flying boar.
"That's the flying boar from my vision. Come on!" Aang encouraged us before we followed him. We stood in front of the wall and Aang immediately picked me up in his arms. I yelped quietly as he leaped over the wall and gently put me down.
He does that so much but I'm not complaining.
Sokk and Katara hop over and we run into the courtyard to hide again. Suddenly, the ground begins to rumble and we each got launched into the air. We all yell out before we fall on the ground. Katara, Aang, and I land on bushes and Sokka face plants the grounds.
I sat there dazed for moment before recovering.
"What are you doing here, Twinkle Toes?"
I looked up and saw a girl in a fancy dress and had her way up done nicely. I assumed she was the Blind Bandit because of her snarky attitude and voice.
"How did you know it was me?" Aang asked
"Don't answer to Twinkle Toes, it's not manly!" Sokka berated and I scoffed at him.
"You're the one whose bag matches his belt." Katara countered. I ruffled my hair and straightened my flower crown as I sat up.
"How did you find me?" The Bandit asked.
"Well, a crazy king told me I had to find an earthbender who listens to the earth." Aang begins and we all stand up on our feet. "And then I had a vision in a magic swamp, and-"
"What Aang is trying to say is, he's the Avatar. And if he doesn't master earthbending soon, he won't be able to defeat the Fire Lord." Katara interrupted, trying to sum up our issue.
The girl raises a hand up in Katara's face, uninterested. "Not my problem. Now, get out of here, or I'll call the guards."
She starts to walk away.
"Look, we all have to do our part to win this war, and yours is to teach Aang earthbending." Sokka mentioned.
I don't think consistently talking to her and berating her will help. It will just make her more annoyed.
"Guards! Guards, help!" The girl pleaded in a helpless voice and we scurried away to find a place to hide.
The guards run out to help the blind girl.
"Toph! What happened?" A guard asks.
"I thought I heard someone. I got scared." She told them in a scared voice.
She's a good a actress.
"You know your father doesn't want you wandering the grounds without supervision, Toph." A guard tells her as they escort her out of the courtyard.
——
Aang had an idea to get inside the house. He was gonna use the Avatar card to get in and talk to the whole Beifong family. I was hesitant to agree on this because Toph is already upset with us and this will just increase her anger more.
Later that day, the team and I were sat at a lovely dining table with the Beifong family and Master Yu. The food looked delicious and Sokka apparently agrees with me because he was devouring his food already.
A servant brings out a cup of soup to Toph.
"Blow on it. It's too hot for her." Lao, Toph's father, instructs.
"Allow me." Aang offers and sends a small tornado Toph's way to cool down the soup. We applaud his kind gesture except Toph.
"Avatar Aang, it's an honor to have you visit us." Poppy, Toph's mother, kindly says.
"In your opinion, how much longer do think the war will last?" Lao asked Aang.
"I'd like to defeat the Fire Lord by the end of summer, but I can't do that without finding an earthbending teacher first." Aang remarks and Toph gives him an annoyed expression.
"Well, Master Yu is the finest teacher in the land. He's been teaching Toph since she was little." Lao explained.
"Then she must be a great earthbender! Probably good enough to teach someone else-OW!"
I looked at Aang in worry and he sits up unharmed. Toph must of wanted him to shut up and Earthbended at him somehow.
Just a guess.
I looked at Toph who was merely eating her soup.
"Toph is still learning the basics." Yu mentioned.
I'm no earthbender but I don't think 'basics' is the right term here. She's a gifted bender.
"Yes, and sadly, because of her blindness, I don't think she will ever become a true master." Lao continues and I finally understood.
Toph's family thinks she can't bend well because of her blindness but she is actually good.
"Oh, I'm sure she's better than you think she is-"
We all froze when Aang's face suddenly got shoved into his bowl of soup. I gave him an odd look as he looked up and rubs the soup off his face. He suddenly sneezes which sends the remainder of his food at the Beifong family who got covered in food.
"What's your problem?!" Toph exclaimed with anger, standing up.
"What's your problem?!" Aang repeats doing the same gesture.
"Well, shall we move to the living room for dessert, then?" Poppy suggests, ignoring the tension in the room.
——
Aang and Toph went to take a walk to talk out their differences. During that walk, they got ambushed and got kidnapped.
The rest of us rush outside and find a note on the ground attached to a dagger.
"Whoever took Aang and Toph left this." I handed the note to Katara because I was too worried to read it. I know Aang can handle himself but I still get worried about him.
Toph can handle herself; she's tough.
""If you want to see your daughter again, bring five hundred gold pieces to the arena." It's signed Xin Fu and The Boulder." Katara read aloud and Sokka takes the note from our sister.
"I can't believe it..." Sokka spoke in disbelief.
"I know, this is awful." I agreed with worry.
"I have the Boulder's autograph!" Sokka suddenly expresses and runs forward. I look at my brother and roll my eyes.
Sokka falls to his knees and lifts the note into the air. Katara and I share a look of annoyance and shake our heads in disbelief.
"Master Yu, I need you to help me get my daughter back." Lao told Yu.
"We're going with you." Katara offered.
"Poor Toph, she must be so scared..."
I doubt that, Poppy. She's hotheaded and tough, not scared of anything.
——
"Toph!"
We arrived at the arena to get our friends back. Xin Fu and the Boulder were here.
"Here's your money." I lifted up the bag of gold pieces and put it on the ground. "Now let them go!"
I will hurt them if I have too. I don't mess around when it comes to Aang.
Yu earthbended the bag over to Xin Fu and he checked it before gesturing to let them down.
Unfortunately, they only let Toph's cage down and she was let free.
"What about Aang?!" Katara asked.
"I think the Fire Nation will pay a hefty price for the Avatar." Xin Fu unrolled a scroll of the Avatar. "Now, get out of my ring."
I gritted my teeth at this and we were ready to attack but a huge dust tornado came hurdling in to reveal the Fire Nation man. Soon after that, all the fighters from Earth Rumble came flying in to defend Xin Fu.
"Go, I'll be okay." Aang assured us and I shook my head.
"I'm not leaving you!" I called to him before I ran over to Toph.
"Toph!" Katara called, "there's too many of them. We need an earthbender. We need you!"
"My daughter is blind. She is blind and tiny and helpless and fragile. She cannot help you!" Lao argued and I saw the anger in his daughter's face form. She snatched her hand away from his and began walking towards us.
"Yes, I can."
We went back to the ring and Toph bends a small part of the ring to stop the fighters from leaving.
"Let him go!" Toph demanded. "I've beat you all before and I'll do it again!"
"The Boulder takes issue with that comment." The Boulder mentioned and I rolled my eyes.
Ugh, him again.
The Hippo tossed Aang's cage to the side and my siblings and I went to get him but Toph held us back.
"Wait!"
The fighters charged toward us and Toph didn't move. She listened instead.
"They're mine."
We stared at her in shock and looked at one another.
Toph slammed her foot in the ground and lifted her hands up causing the ground to rumble. She slammed her foot once again and caused an avalanche of rocks and rumble to send all the fighter back. Majority of the ring was covered in dust and Toph walked into the dust.
The only thing I heard was movement and rumbling and suddenly a body was tossed out of the ring.
During this time, my siblings and I attempted to free Aang.
"Are you okay?" I asked him, worriedly. He nodded.
The cage was metal so it wasn't an easy task.
Maybe I could melt the cage.
"Katara." I whispered to her and she saw the look I had and knew what I wanted to do. She gave me a slight nod.
"Hit it harder!" Aang yelled.
"I'm trying!" Sokka argued.
I went to the back of the cage without the boys noticing and sneakily formed fire in my hands. I touched the cage and the part I was touching slowly dissolved.
The boys were oblivious to my actions. Once I was able to see Aang, I stopped and Katara and I opened the bottom part.
"Got it!" I smiled and the boys looked at us.
Aang didn't question how and leaped out ready to fight.
Sokka shook his head at this and pointed ahead.
The Hippo appeared swinging around an Earth coin and the Boulder tumbled out of the dust cloud. Both fighters let out a battle cry when Toph appears in front of them.
Suddenly, the Headhunter flies in to attack along with The Hippo and the Boulder. Toph listens and rotates the center of the ring around so the Headhunter collides with the other fighters.
With one swift movement, Toph sends all three of the wrestlers out of the ring. Toph lowers her hands causing all the dust to vanish and on the other side was Xin Fu.
Toph spits before they circle each other. Suddenly, Xin Fu sends multiple Boulder's her direction and she forms a small prism shaped shield to protect herself. She sends one part of the prism his direction but he dodges it swiftly. Xin Fu touches the ring and sends a boulder her direction but she shifts her weight to miss the attack.
Toph creates a fissure of earth and sends Xin Fu flying out of the ring and he lands next to her father and Yu.
All of us were shocked and happy by her bending. Sokka passes out as Katara, Aang and I go up to her. She's spectacular.
——
"Dad. I know it's probably hard for you to see me this way. But the obedient little helpless blind girl that you think I am just isn't me. I love fighting. I love being an earthbender, and I'm really, really good at it. I know I've kept my life secret from you, but you were keeping me secret from the whole world. You were doing it to protect me, but I'm twelve years old and I've never had a real friend. So, now that you see who I really am, I hope it doesn't change the way you feel about me."
We were back at Toph's house and she was trying to convince her parents to let her Earthbend and fight.
"Of course it doesn't change the way I feel about you, Toph. It's made me realize something." Lao responded.
"Is has?!" She spoke with hope.
"Yes. I've let you had far too much freedom. From now on you'll be cared for and guarded twenty-four hours a day."
My mouth parted with shock and disbelief.
"But dad!" Toph protested.
"We're doing this for your own good, Toph." Poppy reasoned and Toph hung her head, sadly.
"Please escort the Avatar and his friends out. They are no longer welcome here." Lao instructed the guards.
The four of us walked out of the house and I looked at Toph sadly.
I felt awful about this. Not only do we need to find a different teacher for Aang, but I hate how Toph is treated.
"I'm sorry, Toph." Aang apologized.
"I'm sorry too. Goodbye, Aang."
——
We left the town as we were about to take off on Appa. We were all upset about Toph but Aang was most upset.
I went up to the Avatar to comfort him.
"Don't worry, we'll find you a teacher. There are plenty of amazing earthbenders out there." I assured him, grabbing his hand. "Even if Toph is amazing."
"Not like her." Aang said.
We both boarded Appa ready to leave. Suddenly, I heard panting behind us and we turned to see Toph sprinting toward us.
"Toph! What are you doing here?!" Aang asked in shock to see her.
A smile formed on my face when I saw her.
"My dad changed his mind. He said I was free to travel the world." Toph explained to us.
I know she's lying, but I'm glad she's here.
"Well, we'd better get out of here, before your dad changes his mind again." Sokka suggested.
"Good idea." Toph agreed.
"You're going to be a great teacher, Toph." Aang mentioned
"Speaking of which, I want to show you something."
"Okay." Aang floated down ground and when he landed Toph bends a rock below him to send him into the air and lands into a tree.
I gasped before giggling at this.
"Now we're even." Toph said. "Um, I'll take the belt back."
Sokka unlatches the belt and tosses it down to her. Not being able to see the belt, it hits her in the head and she falls to the ground.
"Ow!"
"Sorry!"
Aang falls from the tree and grunts.
After that scene, we took off into the night. I glanced back at Toph and she was smiling softly.
——
Toph is finally in my story. She is one of my favorites with Aang being my favorite and she being second favorite.
The next episode is Zuko Alone and I'm obviously skipping that one because Team Avatar is not present in that one. So, I was thinking of making an original chapter to replace Zuko Alone.
I need to decide and you can help me out. I can either have Aya go off on her own and gather supplies for the team or I can get some romance in the story and have Aang and Aya go on a date.
If Aya went on her own, it would be similar to Zuko's. By similar I mean, she meets a family and helps them out in some sort of way. Aang and Aya's date explains itself basically.
So if you can't decide and I don't get responses(which is normal), then I may just scratch that idea and continue on. I want to write one of those original chapters but I'm having trouble so please help me out.
