She's Dead

It had been three days since Lily was at their house. Caroline had trouble sleeping ever since that night. The sick feeling in the pit of her stomach wouldn't go away.

Caroline had just walked into the kitchen to make another pot of coffee. The phone rang and made her jump. Her heart raced as she answered the phone.

"Hello?"

"Hello, this is Detective Fillens. I'm calling from the Clear Water Police Department. Is this Caroline Collins?"

"Yes, speaking."

Caroline assumed it would be work calling about the new shipment she was expecting. Her heart sank to her toes.

"Do you know Lily Grahm?"

"Yes, she's my friend. Why? What happened?" Caroline started to tremble.

"Mrs. Collins, I'm sorry to tell you that Miss Grahm is dead."

The was a pause.

"Oh my God."

Caroline set the phone on the kitchen counter and composed herself.

Scott looked up from the dining room table. He was eating dinner.

"What is it?" He asked his wife.

Caroline waved her hand aggressively before picking up the phone again.

Scott grunted. He wondered why Caroline had acted so distantly from him the last few days. Scott thought it must have been something to do with Lily. He was surprised he hadn't heard more about her or the baby. It made him a little nervous.

"How did it happen?" Caroline choked.

"We believe she was murdered."

Caroline started to hyperventilate. She dropped the phone on the counter again.

Scott quickly stood up and stood by her.

"Who the hell is it? What's going on?"

"Here, fucking take it." Caroline shoved the phone in Scott's face.

"Jesus Christ, Caroline, what has gotten into you?"

Caroline ran into the bedroom crying.

Scott was nervous about who was on the other side of the line.

"Hello? Who is this?"

"Oh, uh, this is Detective Fillens. Whom am I speaking with?"

"I'm Scott Collins, Caroline's husband."

"Ah, did you know Lily Grahm?"

Did?

"Yes, what about her?"

"I just told your wife that Miss Grahm is dead."

Thank Christ.

"Oh, I see."

"Do you mind if I ask a couple of questions while I have you on the phone?"

"Sure." Scott rolled his eyes.

"When did you or your wife last see Miss Grahm?"

"It was three nights ago. Lily came storming in after she got into a fight with her boyfriend. She didn't stay long. She didn't say where she was going."

Scott prayed cops wouldn't find out about Dean and the baby.

"Okay, what is the boyfriend's name? Miss Grahm only had your wife listed on her emergency contact list."

Scott was curious. "The boyfriend is Brent Hanson. Was she at the hospital?"

"Yes, Miss Grahm was admitted into the hospital early this morning. Someone found her on the side of a road. She had been stabbed last night. But unfortunately, she died not long after arriving at the hospital."

"I see. Well, my wife took the news hard. I have to go check on her. Is there anything else?"

"I'm going to need to ask your wife some questions. Could you have her come down to the station later today?"

"I suppose." Scott hung up.

That bitch won't be a problem anymore. I still have to deal with the other one.

Scott felt a little lighter. He went to the bathroom before checking on Caroline. Maybe he could get her to talk to him again.

A few minutes later, Scott entered the bedroom and saw it was empty. He went to search the rest of the house. She left.

Scott shrugged it off. He assumed she went down to the police station. Next, he sat down at his desk and smiled at his computer.

He was proud of his new top-of-the-line computer. Before, he had never dreamed of being able to buy one. Caroline was horrible with computers. She would get viruses on her laptops all the time. It gave him the excuse to tell her not to touch his.

Scott took advantage of his wife being gone and opened the 'Phone' folder in his files. He had waited a long time to be able to watch his videos on a bigger screen. He transferred the videos from his phone to the computer a few nights ago. But Lily interrupted him from watching them right away. He got sick of watching them on his little phone screen.

"What the hell?"

Scott saw a strange document saved in the folder. He opened it.

Hello Dear,

I know I'm not allowed to use your computer. But after Lily left, I needed to calm myself down. I wanted to play Solitaire. Well, I saw the videos. I'm taking them to the police. I learned how to transfer files myself.

"That fucking bitch!" Scott screamed as he threw his computer onto the floor.

Scott panicked. The first thing he thought of was to go up to their cabin and get into his safe. Not even Caroline knew it was there.

The cabin was only a little over an hour away. It was on Lake Winter, outside of Bridge Creek. Scott and Dean shared it. Sometimes Scott would invite his brother, Edmund, and his family to the cabin.

There should have been enough cash in there to at least help him get out of the country. The money was originally going to be used as a surprise for Caroline. He wanted to take her on a second honeymoon in Europe. That wasn't going to be happening anymore.
