Scream
Elizabeth jumped on Dean as he walked through the door.
"What did Scott want?"
"He wants me to help weld something for a new client."
Dean sat on the couch and turned on the TV. Elizabeth sat down next to him.
"What did you want to do today? We could go to the cabin since you're not working tomorrow. We can go fishing or swimming."
Dean huffed. "Can't we stay here? I don't want to rush to get things ready to go up there. I want to relax."
"That's the point of going to the cabin. To relax." Elizabeth patted his arm.
Dean snapped. "No, you're the one who gets to relax. I get stuck with doing everything."
Elizabeth was caught off guard. "I help with things."
Dean scoffed. "Yeah, you help buy things with my money." He stood up from the couch and walked away.
Elizabeth stood up. "Why have you been acting so weird lately?"
"Oh, I don't know. Maybe because sometimes I wish someone would listen and care about my feelings without making it about them."
Dean stormed off into the bathroom and locked the door. He leaned over the sink and splashed water on his face.
Something was bothering him about that night at Ol' Reds. He couldn't remember having sex with Lily at all. He never even thought about it. All he knew was he woke up next to her naked in the back of his truck. Then he passed out again. When he woke up again, she was gone.
Dean went to Scott about it the next day. But Scott tried to convince him it must have been a dream. Guilt had started to overwhelm Dean. He did care about Elizabeth. He would never cheat on her.
Sometimes Dean wasn't sure if he could completely trust Scott. Dean swore he remembered seeing Scott go into his truck that night. But Scott denied it and made it clear to leave Caroline out of it.
Dean was jealous of their marriage. He watched them struggle so much. But then they achieved so much in the last few years. Scott's business grew. But so did the stress. He was gone from home a lot. Caroline was lonely with their son gone.
As Dean felt lonely as well, he wished he could talk to Caroline more. There was always something that caused Dean to distance himself from her.
Sometimes he felt awkward around her. He never knew what to say exactly. Elizabeth was always around and would butt into any conversation he had, especially with another woman.
Dean didn't even want to go out much anymore. He felt suffocated by Elizabeth. When she heard him joking around, she would get pissed.
Elizabeth thought everything between them was fine until Dean had enough and snapped. She was still standing in front of the couch.
Jesus Christ. I was trying to help him feel better. Why won't he tell me what happened Friday? Something happened. I thought he stayed at Scott's, but Caroline would have told me. She understands. She had to deal with Scott's bullshit when he was drinking.
Elizabeth decided to call Caroline just in case. The phone kept ringing.
"Hey, Elizabeth." Caroline sounded nervous.
"Hey, just saw your husband. He and Dean talked about a new project. But I have a question for you."
Caroline was confused. Scott said he was going to deal with a new client.
"What question?"
"Did Dean stay over at your house Friday night?"
Caroline wasn't sure what to tell her. "Yeah, I thought he told you."
"No, he didn't. I was worried. I didn't get a hold of him until later. Why didn't you let me know?"
"I'm sorry, I figured you guys were coming over anyway. But then you texted saying you weren't feeling good. I told him to call you and that he should probably go home."
Caroline thought she would throw up. She couldn't believe she was lying like this.
"Oh, I see. Dean has been acting strange the last two days. Did something happen that night?"
"No, nothing. Dean and Scott were hanging out and drinking."
"Alright, well, let me know next time, please?"
Caroline heard the garage door open. "Okay, I will. Scott just got home. Bye!"
Caroline sighed and got out of bed. She walked into the kitchen and waited for Scott. He jumped when he opened the door and saw Caroline standing there.
"Elizabeth just called."
Scott froze. That bitch.
"She said you were just there. And she asked me if Dean stayed here Friday night."
"What did you tell her?"
"I said yes. You two were drinking, and Dean slept here. I told him to call Elizabeth and go home because she was sick. You better get a hold of him and let him know."
"Okay, good thinking."
Scott was divided on if she should have told Elizabeth the truth. Maybe she would have broken up with him. But Scott told himself to focus on the more important part and took his phone out. He walked back into the garage.
A few minutes later, Scott came back.
"You talk to Lily today?"
"Yeah, after I woke up. Lily said she regrets telling Dean. She wants to pretend the baby is Brent's.
Scott sighed. "Hopefully, it all works out. Lily needs to get her shit together."
"Please, she's still my friend. She's been through a lot and doesn't know how to deal with things."
Scott puts his hands up defensively. "I know, I know. You've been friends for years. She told you about the terrible things that happened to her."
Caroline sighed. "You know how hard it is to get over some things. Look at what we've been through."
Scott looked down at his hands. "I know. I'll never forget what happened to Levy."
Caroline put on a smile. "It's hard on both of us. We're both going to hurt for a long time. But there wasn't much you could do." Her jaw clenched.
Scott snapped. "Yes, there was! Sometimes I wish you could scream at me and tell me how it was my fault. Because it was. I feel guilty every day. But you're too goddamn understanding."
Caroline frowned. She put her arms around his neck and kissed him.
"I love you, Scott."
"Yeah." Scott kissed her back and hugged her. "I love you too."
"Why don't we relax for the rest of the day? It is Sunday." She smiled.
Scott laughed. "You know me too well."
