Not On A Sunday

A couple of hours later, Caroline finally woke up. Her eyes shot open. The sun was shining through the open window.

Caroline squinted her eyes at the alarm clock. She was shocked at how late it was. She turned to the other side and saw Scott was gone.

Once Caroline crawled out of bed, she roamed the rest of the house. Then she decided to check the garage. His SUV was gone.

She walked back into the kitchen and noticed a note on the counter.

I hope you slept well. I have to deal with a new client. I'll be back later. Love you.

Scott had always refused to leave the house on Sundays. It must have been an emergency.

A sudden jolt hit Caroline's stomach. Something told her she should call Elizabeth and ask about Dean. But she couldn't explain to Elizabeth how she knew what Dean did last night.

Caroline picked up her phone and called Lily instead.

Lily answered after the first ring. "Hold on. I got Cody on me."

Caroline waited.

"Okay, what's up?" Lily asked.

"What are you going to do? Does Brent know you're pregnant?"

Caroline tried to remain calm. Instead, she sounded bitter. Lily was surprised.

"Um, no, he doesn't. And I don't really know yet. I'm about 9 weeks. So, I'm not really worried about showing yet."

"You can't wait last minute! You have to do something now! Either tell Brent or don't have the baby."

"Caroline! How can you say that of all people? Of course, I want to keep the baby. I guess I'll tell Brent a later due date. He won't question it being his."

"What if he goes to the doctor with you?"

"He hates going to hospitals. I'll update him afterward."

Caroline rubbed her nose and sighed.

"I wish you didn't tell me. I would have preferred you lie to me. And why did you tell Dean if you planned to lie to Brent?"

Lily had to look at her phone screen to see if she was talking to Caroline. Usually, she was much more understanding and helpful.

"I don't know. I'm bored. You know me, Carrie. I like to stir the pot."

Caroline knew Lily was trying to shrug it all off.

Oh my God, stop calling me Carrie!

"I know, but you have to stop causing drama. Cody is about to turn two, and you're having a second baby. Trust me. Your life is going to be full of excitement with kids."

Lily chuckled softly. "You're right. I don't want them to have the same childhood I had. They don't need daddy issues too."

Lily had told Caroline about her childhood before. It was not a good one by any means. Caroline was surprised Lily even remembered a lot of it. Those bad memories should have been locked away. Caroline wished some of her memories were buried.

"What if Dean wants to take responsibility?" Caroline asked.

"I'll tell him not to worry about it. It's Brent's baby."

Caroline was happy to hear that. But she knew it wasn't going to be that easy.

A shiver went up Caroline's spine as she ended the call. Something didn't feel right. She decided to crawl back into bed. There wasn't anything going on that day.

-

Scott slammed his fist against the steering wheel while driving on the highway.

The fucking slut should have kept her mouth shut! I can't believe she got pregnant!

Scott pulled into Dean's driveway. Luckily, he saw Elizabeth's car was gone. He ran up to the door and started pounding on it.

A minute later, the door opened. Scott took a step back.

"Scott? Is something wrong?" Elizabeth looked concerned. Her long purple hair shimmered in the sunlight.

Scott's furious expression quickly disappeared and brought his cheesy smile out.

"Oh, I'm sorry, Elizabeth. I didn't think you were home. I didn't mean to disturb you." He looked back at their driveway to confirm her car was gone.

"Oh, yeah. It's in the shop and should be done tomorrow. Do you want Dean? I'm surprised you're out and about on a Sunday." Elizabeth smiled.

Scott forced out a laugh. "So am I."

She's so two-faced.

Elizabeth remained smiling.

He's so two-faced.

"Yeah, I need to talk to him about working on a project with me next month."

Elizabeth's smile turned into an authentic one. This project would be good for him.

"Come in. Dean will be out of the shower soon."

Scott followed her into the house. He was thinking of a way to talk to Dean without her around.

Elizabeth offered Scott coffee. He declined and sat on the couch. She went into the kitchen to make herself some.

Dean walked out of the bathroom with just a pair of shorts on. His shaggy red hair was still dripping.

"The hell? Isn't it Sunday?" Dean asked and shook his wet hair.

Scott was annoyed with being reminded it was Sunday.

"Yeah, never mind that. We need to talk." Scott gave him a look that signaled they needed to talk in private.

Elizabeth walked out of the kitchen.

"Hun, Scott says he wants you to work on a project with him. Isn't that great?" She smiled and bounced on her toes.

Scott patted Dean's shoulder. "Yeah, why don't we get breakfast and talk about it?"

Scott looked over at Elizabeth. "You don't mind me taking him out of the house, do you?"

Elizabeth hesitated at first. "I guess not. It must be important to get you out of the house on a Sunday."

Scott tried to match her fake smile. He patted Dean's shoulder harder. "Oh yeah, it's big, alright."

Dean wasn't in a good mood. Elizabeth had been asking questions about where he was Friday night.

Dean got dressed and hopped into Scott's SUV. At first, it was silent. Dean could feel the anger radiating off of Scott. He knew what Scott wanted to talk about. But he still didn't understand why Scott was so upset. It had nothing to do with him.

Scott turned onto some country road and pulled over.

"What the fuck?" He glared at Dean.

"I know. I know. I fucked up. I don't want a baby. Not with her anyway."

"You idiot, we can't even be sure it's yours. You should have just denied it and ignored her. But no! Now Caroline got dragged into it."

Scott slammed his fist on the steering wheel again.

Dean frowned. "I'm sorry. Lily sounded positive it was mine."

Scott calmed down a little. "Well, I hope Caroline can talk some sense into her. I know she doesn't want to ruin things for you and Elizabeth. She thinks it's her fault for introducing Lily to you." Scott narrowed his eyes at Dean. "If you don't figure this shit out, I'll make you regret it."

Dean frowned. "I know. Tell Caroline I don't blame her."

Scott was content with his friendship with Dean for the most part. They had been friends for fifteen years. Dean had been dating Elizabeth for almost seven years. It was the longest relationship for Dean. Scott and Caroline had been together for ten years.

Caroline would ask Scott why Dean hadn't married Elizabeth yet. He told Caroline he didn't know. But he knew. Caroline didn't realize how controlling Elizabeth could be.

Scott was surprised he got Dean out of the house with her home. Usually, Elizabeth had to come with them when the two of them went anywhere.

He was shocked when Elizabeth left the bar early on Caroline's birthday. That was the biggest mistake she ever made.

"Are we on the same page now?" Scott asked.

"Yup. I won't fuck up again." Dean nodded his head.

Scott wanted to believe that. "Okay, let's get you home to your wife."

Dean groaned. "I wish you wouldn't call her that." He paused. "She's been bothering me about marriage and babies again. It's pissing me off. I've told her I'll let her know when I'm ready. And that if she keeps nagging me, it will take longer. She got pissed." Dean sighed and looked at Scott. "How do you and Caroline make it work so well? Even with what happened to Levy?"

Scott thought about the son they lost years ago. He fell deep into a slump during that time.

"Caroline is my best friend. She understands me. I felt guilty for taking so long to get it together after Levy died. But she stood by me through all my bullshit."

Dean decided not to say anything else on their way back. He just watched the trees and fields pass by.
