CHAPTER 9

"Good morning class!" He greets.

I stand, stunned for a good five seconds just staring at him, with pure disgust evident in my eyes. The very thought of him makes me sick and his once sexy voice, now feels like an annoying prick!

However, I quickly manage to compose myself, and sit down for I want nothing to do with him anymore, especially getting caught and having to face him alone! I dread that now more than ever.

The once sweet torture is now a mere painful torture...

He begins the lesson on 'trigonometry' and I avert my eyes to anywhere but him, which is pretty impossible as he's the teacher!

After endless attempts to distract myself, I accidentally look at him and catch his eyes on me. I could see them beaming with happiness on locking with mine, and quickly avert my eyes, only to see his face fall after a few seconds but he regains composure and continues class in a subtle tone.

After an hour of dreading and internally whining, the bell signals the end of his class. All I want is to just get out of here before he spots me, and to my luck, a bunch of students occupy him with some questions. 'Thank heavens!' I take the chance and quickly run out, without a second glance.

I'm now sitting at the cafeteria with a cup of coffee in front of me, due to my decision to skip the second hour. An entire hour of avoiding his intense stare and pretending to be fine, drained me out. The place is almost empty, except for a few seniors of the adjoining University, chatting and whiling away their time.

"Hey!" Greets Jack, as he appears beside the table I am seated in.

"Hey Jack..." I trail off, unable to think of what to say.

"Somebody's low today." He says with a make-believe serious face.

"Nah Jack. Just... you know... the usual," is all I can manage.

"That's OK, Amy! You don't have to tell me. I won't force you." He assures with a smile.

"I better get to cleaning and setting up stuff before everyone gets here. Enjoy your coffee Amy!" He replies and then turns to leave.

"Jack!" I call out. I walk up to him and throw my arms around him hugging him tight, and stay that way for a few seconds, the warmth of his body relaxing me and then pull back and smiled at him, a genuine one!

"Thank you!" I utter and walk back to my seat.

I get half-way into my coffee mug, deep in thoughts when I notice something... or someone!

The very sight of that person makes me cringe. I couldn't forget anything at that moment. Everything hit me like a fast replay, and I decide to get up and leave before my 'fake smile' fades and tears began.

I walk out of the cafeteria in quick strides hoping...

"Hey Amy?" Calls the voice.

That didn't happen!

"Uh... Hey Miranda!" I try to chirp in a fake enthusiastic voice. Yeah, she knew me which made this even harder to take!

"Amy, long time!" She comes up to me and bear hugs me, then releasing with a grin.

"Yeah, long time! You've changed a lot!" I fake-smirk in a way to mock her, when in fact I meant every word with malice.

She just giggles at it, not getting the point. A satisfied smile graces my lips.

But I wonder if she knows about me in Nathan's life? What happened between us? Not that we were ever dating or something but, just my existence or presence! I'd asked her earlier on, about the fast spreading rumors of them dating which she denied with a no-and-I-am-dating-someone-else speech! Gosh! She's cheating on that guy as well then!

Disgusting...

I cannot stand her any longer so I just cut it short.

"Hey, I gotta leave. I'll see you around. Take care." I put up a plastic smile and quickly leave.

Once out, I wander in the grounds, as there's still time to kill until the next class. I don't know what to do so I just continue roaming around aimlessly. All of a sudden, I feel this urgent need to pee. I quickly run back in and up the stairs until I find the washroom and sprint in to rid the load. Once done, I feel much better. I take a few seconds at the mirror, and finally come out. Looking down at the watch, the clock says I got ten minutes to spare.

I decide to just slowly walk back to class as that wi take up some time. I take about 3 steps and freeze at the deep, familiar, yet annoying voice.

"Amy!"

I hesitate for an eternity to turn around, then start walking once again. Then I hear footsteps approaching me, inching closer and closer as I increase my pace.

"Amy!" This time the source is right behind me, say a few inches! Too close for comfort.

I take a deep breath and put up my best 'fake smile' and turn around to face him. I then take a step back before saying.

"Yes, Mr Nathan! Anything wrong?" I say in a rather cool and composed tone, which definitely has its impact. His unsettled expression sets a satisfactory warmth within me. He stares at me forever, and then finally opens his mouth to speak, and closes it again.

"Mr Nathan?" I wave in front of him in a mocking way.

"Uh..." He fumbles and then speaks up finally in a very cold authoritative tone. "What are you doing here?"

"Excuse me, sir?" I reply, utterly confused at what he means by that.

"Why aren't you in class?" He spits out, a strange venom to his tone. My indifference seems to have ruffled his insides. Good! He deserves that...

"I'm on my way to class, sir." I finish in a formal tone.

He eyes me for a second before he turns around, and walks away. He moves in quick strides and before I know it, he disappears, without a second glance at me. I hear the faint sound of my cracked heart, shattering to pieces.

Sighing, I make my way to my next class. As soon as I step in, I regret ever returning to class the minute I hear Mrs Simpson's voice. She is our Physics teacher and her lullaby-lessons forced me to sleep. I sit at the last seat and doze of as class begins.

When I wake up, class is almost done, with Mrs Simpson announcing a test next week. I'm greeted with whines and groans by disapproving students.

At lunch, I just sit quietly sipping on my juice and taking large bites of my chicken burger, while the rest of them chat away.

"Amy! You alright? You haven't spoken a word today!" Natty says, snapping me out of my daze.

"Nothing. I'll just go to class. I have some work to do. See ya guys. Bye!" I get up to leave when I remember something. "And Natts, I won't be coming to tuitions today. Take care," and I walk away.

I don't have the mind to sit through the rest of the day, so I just decide to go home and get some sleep.

AN HOUR LATER

"Dad?" I ask, my eyes twitching with confusion, as I step in. "You early?" It is 1.20pm.

"Oh... No honey. I was at home the whole day..." He trails off. "There are cookies in the kitchen." He quickly says to confuse me further, but since I've no energy for this, I decide to drop it.

"Yeah thanks dad, and I'll be upstairs. Call me if you need anything!"

I take a box of cookies and jog upstairs. I quickly change into a tee and a pair of shorts, and sit down on the bed with my laptop. I decide to just watch some movie to while away time.

At around 7pm, the movie credits roll and the cookies are done. Having no life left in me, I plan to go to sleep early as I have truck loads to do and no mood. I tuck myself under the covers, lay staring at the ceiling when everything that happened during the day flashes by my mind. It's unstoppable. I try to get up, shake it off and go back to sleep, but no! That does not work. I feel tears popping out of my eyes and don't try to stop them.

I just had my first heartbreak, or I don't even know what that's called cause Nathan and I weren't even dating! My mind drifts back to the events of that night that started all this crappy mess.

*Flashback to the night of late detention*

"Do you intend on getting in today?"

The drive home is filled with awkward silence, and my mind with extreme guilt. I can't take it any longer.

"Uh... Sir." I blurt, breaking the icy silence.

"Yeah?" He yells with anger.

"Uhmm... I'm s-sorry s-sir." I manage to stutter. "I totally forgot about detention."

He sighs and responds, "that's OK"

"There was a lot that happened, that I couldn't take it and..." My voice starts cracking followed by the flow of tears down my cheeks. He stops the engine and pulls the car over to the side.

"Hey! Hey, relax! Amy it's OK! Shh... Relax, it's over! Shushh..." He turns around, and is now stroking my cheeks, wiping the tears away. I look up to meet his eyes. His eyes hold a lot of emotions I just can't fathom. I lean into him and silently sob into his chest while he rubs my back, comforting me.

We sit that way, in the serene silence, barring my muffled sobs for sometime before he decides to speak up again.

"Amy... I'm sorry. I didn't know you were going through so much. I yelled at you cause i-it just..." He says in a very low-soft tone, which deeply resonates hurt.

"Just what?" I softly ask.

"Hurt."

I look up again to meet his eyes, and he looks really pained. I didnt really get what he meant, but then I know there is more to this, so I stay silent. As if on cue, he continues.

"It's just you know, h-how I find a way to spend time with you cau-cause you're important to me, and it hurt to know you don't feel the same way. I was just selfish, I'm sorry Amy." He states with total honesty, leaving me at a total loss of words!

I am a mix of emotions! One being, extreme joy and happiness that he likes me the way I did! Also guilt, of thinking all sorts of things about him, and sad that I hurt him along the way. But the thing that got me most confused, is his confession of liking me when he said he hated me earlier and that I was a pathetic sad excuse!

"Wha-what?" I finally ask. "But you said you hated me and that I'm a 'spoiled, sad excuse for a girl', a 'waste of time.'" I say, quoting his hurtful words.

He bends forward and his eyes connect with mine.

"Amy, sweetheart no! Don't ever take those words to your heart, I never meant them. I was just hurt and angry and couldn't control what I said. Besides, I never said I hated you, I can never do that." He pauses with a sigh and then continues.

"You're really, really important to me and spending my time with you is something I love doing! I always look forward to seeing you, it makes me smile without my knowledge! You, you do that to me. You make me happy." He finishes with a sincere smile. He then cups my cheeks before saying.

"I think I like you."

My heart just skipped a beat there. All this was a lot for me to take in and his hopeful eyes is all I can see.

"I think, I like you too."

He smiles, a real big one this time.

"But..." I start again and his face falls.

"I don't think we can do this, that's what you're going for, right?" He answered for me, sounding dejected and looking like a homeless puppy.

He looks adorable! I just want to run my hands through his hair and hug him like my world depends on it. But I can't...

"Nathan, you're my teacher and I don't even know much about you." I say, with stones weighing my heart down.

"I understand..." He lets out a sigh. "That's okay. We'll just pretend this never happened. Let's get you home, alright?" He turns around, hiding his face from me, and starts the car again.

"Nathan stop!" I voice out, almost two minutes into the road.

"Wh-what's the matter, Amy?" He worriedly asks, pulling over the car again.

"See, all that happened tonight, it's gonna be really hard to forget. I mean I like you, you like me and we both know that now! How can we pretend nothing happened?" I mumble at a stretch. "Why can't we be together?" I ask with a sob.

"Amy, sweetheart we can definitely be together! No one's stopping us, but you. You didn't want this seconds earlier, remember?" He whispers, all the while staring at me.

"No! No! Nathan I like you and that's all that matters to me. I wanna be with you. I don't care what people think or say, all I care is about the fact that you like me just the same." I rant hysterically.

He sighs deeply and stares at me for a few seconds, my eyes a pool of tears and my heart beating erratically. He then speaks up.

"Amy, you need to relax and think a-"

"This is what I want Nathan! I'm damn sure about it." I almost end up yelling.

He looks flustered by my behavior.

"Amy, sweetie! You have to calm down and listen. No, lemme finish." He says when I try to cut him off yet again.

"See, this is all too soon to decide. And-"

I lean in and kiss him! He doesn't respond for a second which hurts, and as I'm about to pull off, he cups my cheeks and starts kissing me.

His soft lips gliding over mine smoothly and perfectly overlapping, my bottom lip captured between his lips. His wet, warm tongue tracing my lips, teasingly, for entrance which I gladly give. My eyes are initially half-lidded with desire and once he deepens the kiss, it's fully closed. He places one hand on my back, holding me close while, I press on to his shoulders as I feel I'd almost pass out from the sensation.

I am surrounded comfortingly by his arms. Our bodies calm, relaxed and hearts singing with joy. A moan escapes my lips. Then I immediately realized something!

This was my first kiss!

After a minute or so, he releases me and I fall back onto the seat, with a huge smile on my face. I look up to see the exact expression on his face!

"Nathan, we can make this work, if we try."

"I think we should." He smiles at me.

"So-" He cut me off.

"You don't have to decide now, in this state." He says blushing, which makes my heart flutter wildly.

"Amy, I'm going away for a week or so! In my absence, you'll be able to decide better. So let's take this ahead when I'm back, if everything is still the same."

"Can't wait!!" I exclaim as he giggles at my excited reaction.

"It's late, Amy! Let's get you home first," with that he continues driving.

After about another ten minutes of driving, we spot my house and he stops by the driveway. I turn to his side to wave him goodbye, when he leans in and pecks on my cheek whispering...

"Can't wait for it!"

*End of flashback*

The memory of that night increases the intensity of my tears. It is not a proper breakup as such but nevertheless, it hurt! So I cry, cry hard until I drift off to sleep.
