Chapter Two: Excuse me?
I thrived being myself. I didn't need anyone to teach me how to live or take care of myself. The streets have always been kind to me, I've always been good to them. From when I was younger all I could remember was being in an alleyway without my parents, alone and cold.
I met other kids who were abandoned too, their names were Lucas and Mark and we formed a pact to never abandon each other. The next ten years we stole, robbed, and hustled our way into food and shelter to survive. This world is cruel after all and no one suspects the poor children.
Now that we're older though, it becomes harder to find the food and shelter we need. Mark and I refuse to have to go and work simply because we went all this time without having to, plus no one would hire grown men that bathe in the park bird baths.
Lucas came to us with the information that some new club was opening up. I don't know why, it wasn't like we could afford to get in.
"Okay? A club ooh, not like we have money Luc, we have more important issues than some club."
Lucas whacked the back of my head.
"No stupid, all the CEOs of this town will be there. We could seduce someone into giving us some money or something, plus it's a roof over our head for the night."
Ugh, I didn't want to have to act like I liked those rich types. You would think they would do more with their money rather than spend it on liquor and the opportunity to cheat on their wives, but to each his own.
"You're lucky it's getting colder and Mark is a baby." I joked and Mark scoffed.
"Says the one who panicked last winter." Mark said back.
"I panicked because I saw a flying white bug, and it wasn't a snowflake either."
"Can you two either fuck or stop bickering." Lucas interrupted us. "A married couple I swear. Now let's go before it gets too late to get in."
We nodded and followed after Lucas who lead us to this club that oozed rich people. It was like a feeling you could get in your chest. There were already people dancing around and drunk out of their minds. I turned to say something to Lucas and Mark but they were no longer behind me.
When I turned back around I had bumped into someone.
"Ah, excuse me." I said apologetically. I may have raised myself on the streets, and stole, but I wasn't rude.
The man I bumped into knocked the breath out of me, literally and metaphorically. Unlike the rest of these rich weirdos he was dressed like he just got done playing in the street. His hair was long enough to cover the top of his eyes, which caught my attention quick. He has one double-lid and one mono-lid. I don't think I've seen anyone like that before.
He stared back at me, I wonder if he was judging me, if he could tell that I wasn't of their world. He looked down at the spray paint splatter on my leg. Then back up at my face, it was dark in here so there wouldn't be anyone that he could see me right now.
I was saved, and a little jealous when a man with red hair came and grabbed the mono-lid man by his arm and took him away. Then I felt my own arm being tugged and it was Lucas.
"Dude we lost you in here, come on Mark found a house for us to hit. Belongs to some CEO that isn't home yet."
I smiled, finally something that could be worth our while. Who knows what that rich bastard has in his house. I followed Lucas out and we met up with Mark around the back of the club.
"What's the ETA on the house Mark?"
"It's some condo that a CEO has, but according to sources he hasn't been home since early this afternoon. We should have enough time to grab some shit and get out."
"Condo huh? There's lots of space in those to hide some shit." I smirked. "Good job Mark."
The cold air almost made us give up on our mission but when the condo came into view we instantly perked back up. Hacking was always a pass time of mine so it was easy to pick the lock. Lucas went to search the bedroom, Mark headed towards the kitchen and dining area. I was left in the living room staring at all of the vintage art along the walls.
There were pieces you could only find in other countries here, even some art from the streets. I almost feel bad for robbing someone who has such a keen eye for the arts like I do. I continue to search the living room when I stumble across a family picture, neatly decorated in a gold frame.
A mother and a father, with three children, a younger boy and girl and the child in the middle felt familiar to me. I picked the frame up carefully and nearly felt my heart drop out of my chest. Mono-lid, he's the CEO we're attempting to rob and he saw some features of my face. Panic waved over me as I set the frame back down.
I could hear sirens in the distance and cursed.
"Fuck! Lucas, Mark, we gotta go!"
"Way ahead of you Kook," Lucas came running into the room dragging Mark behind him.
The sirens were closing in, Mark and Lucas made their way out of the back door and when I went to sprint out with them I felt myself being tackled.
"No one has ever tried to rob me. I've lived here for five years alone with no worries and all I wanted to do was enjoy a night out with my friends."
We struggled on the floor for a while, he was trying to turn me over so he could see my face and luckily I had a mask over my nose and mouth. He was strong, as strong as me and he managed to flip me over. I thought he was going to punch me, but he was giving me that same stare in the club.
I don't get this man, he clearly caught me red handed yet he's not fighting me, the sirens stopped coming, and he seems calm, angry, but calm nonetheless.
"Tae! Are you alright? Did you catch the guy?"
I heard voices calling after the man who had me pinned on his kitchen floor underneath him. When he turned his head to answer them I took my opportunity to push him off of me and ran out of his condo.
Lucas and Mark were waiting in the surrounding neighborhood for me. When they asked what happened I told them that I was caught by the owner but nothing happened.
"Why do you think he let you go so easily Kook?" Lucas asked me.
"I don't know, and I don't want to find out. I'm sure there's no way in hell that I'll see him again."
As we walked back to our usual hotel spot I pat my pockets and freeze.
"What's wrong Kook? You know I called Ms. Lydia she never asks us to pay." Lucas says watching my panic.
"It's not that Luc, I left my wallet at the condo."
Mark and Lucas both stared at me wide-eyed, we all had the same thought I guarantee.
Fuck.
