SciFi/Fantasy/Mythical Creatures Winners

Hello everyone! Down below we have the winners of the SciFi/Fantasy/Mythical Creatures Romance Category. Congratulations to our winners.

Our first place winner will get a shout-out of their book on my announcements board! All winners will have a slot in my URA Fantasy Winner library!

Usually I would not do this but there is going to be a runner up for third place. Basically because the scores for 2nd - 3rd were all a point off from each other and in the mid to low 90’s. I will include the runner up in the winning chapter announcement. As well as keeping their book in my URA Winners library. And will also get them a sticker for runner up.

The rest of the contestants weren't far behind also with high scores in the high 80’s. So if you competed but did not place, but would like your results. Please reach out to me SapphirianJ82. And I'll share your results with you.

We had two judges for this category and they chose different scoring and review methods. So one judge is going to be in bold.

Review: I must say, I did not expect to enjoy the story so much. From your eye-catching book cover to your brilliant storytelling. I absolutely adored your world building and the weaving of all of your individual characters. I love how every one of them had a specific part to play and neither felt like much of a filler character to me. I did not expect Kyro’s origin story by the blurb but I feel like that only makes it more interesting. As if both Isla and Kyro were originally discarded by their royal families and yet are the keys to the story and their kingdoms now.

For Second 🥈 Place we have!

Title and Book Cover(9/10): The title is short and catchy. It implies a story centred around a character or event deeply connected to fire, and with the mention of the phoenix, it immediately makes sense. However, the book hover could do so much better; hence, I took off one mark.

Blurb(10/10);The blurb is engaging and intriguing, creating a sense of mystery and conflict. It effectively introduces the protagonist, Ember, and hints at the supernatural elements in the story involving phoenixes and vampires. The contrast between fire and ice adds an interesting dynamic to the story.

Plot/Creativity/Originality(17/20):I found the story to be quite captivating as it unfolds seamlessly. The introduction of our female protagonist, Ember, and the male character, Zane, along with their differences, kept me intrigued to see how they navigate working together despite these contrasts. The lore, particularly that of the phoenixes, added an entertaining element that compelled me to delve deeper into the narrative. I'm rating it a 19 because the exploration of two paranormal beings (likely ancient) was refreshing for me. While enjoyable, I must note that the plot incorporates some familiar tropes that readers might find recognizable.

Character Development(20/20): Our female protagonist is remarkably admirable. She's self-assured, bold, and confident. I like how she went from rigid and resentful to forgiving. That bit of character development was heart warming and gave me hope that both she and Zane might overcome their differences after all. Now what I like best is how she’s flawed as well. She’s resentful and biassed as much as Zane is. Now we're dealing with this unreliable narrator situation. Ember describes him as an icy-cold person and is in constant denial about her developing feelings for him, but the author made me think there's more to him than meets the eye. He's witty and charming. Their supernatural abilities make their dynamics even more interesting. Character development scores full marks because these characters have both pros and cons, with the cons ensuring that they get tackled with more pros as the story progresses.

Story flow(10/10): Very fluid and flawless. I have no complaints. Ember’s monologue was engaging and well written. I did not find myself getting hung up on any words, rather I found it very fascinating.

Grammar(9/10): Stumbled upon some errors but nothing a round of editing cant fix.

Writing Style(10/10): I love it. I found the descriptions very fascinating and well written. And I was able to visualise the story effortlessly.

Overall Engagement and Enjoyment(10/10): It’s a story I’d definitely read and like to find out what happens next, the lore seems quite sophisticated and very fascinating. I’d say this is a very enjoyable story.

Review: From the moment I saw the cover I was intrigued and felt excited for what the story may hold. I also liked your blurb but felt it could’ve been a tad shorter but it’s still written rather well. I found myself getting hooked on your story the more I read it - I was highly engaged throughout. I felt that the story flowed well and over time, you can see that the characters were being built steadily. I do recommend perhaps editing a little as I did see a few tiny mistakes but they’re all spread out into different chapters which is good. Overall, I loved this story but I wouldn’t expect anything less from a writer who has written other favourites of mine.

Our runner up for third 🥉 place with a one point difference is!

Night of the Crane by WendyyWolfe

Title and Book Cover(9/10): "Night of the Crane" is a title that carries a sense of mystery and intrigue. Personally, I think it fits the story well, as the narrative revolves around a specific event that occurred at night. The cover image is captivating, but the text needs adjustment. "The Night of" is almost invisible, making the title appear as "The Crane" at first glance.

Blurb(5/10):Personally, I found the blurb lacking in hook, especially with the overly long first sentence. While it establishes the atmosphere and introduces characters effectively, it could be enhanced with more specific details about the unseen terror and its impact on the town. Adding intrigue by hinting at the nature of the threat or describing a specific event could make it more compelling for potential readers. Additionally, consider trimming unnecessary words for conciseness without losing the essence of the story and breaking longer sentences into smaller ones to improve readability.

Plot/Creativity/Originality(20/20):I particularly liked the way the setting was crafted, it was authentic and so were the character’s responses for the sudden catastrophe.

Character Development(20/20) :I loved the way our protagonist, Macallan, was introduced. He's very quick-witted, rowdy, and charming. In the very first chapter, he went from a brooding and unbothered character to a determined one, and his urgency was very evident. Character dialogues were very natural, and the characters were consistent with their personalities. I am charmed by Macallan's wit and mischievous demeanour. The chemistry between our two protagonists was also very endearing to read.

Story flow(10/10): The story is well-paced and very thrilling to read. Reading about their escapade from the prison cell in the first chapter was gripping, and it kept me engaged. The eerie atmosphere was well-established, with mystery hanging in the air, and I kept wanting to read more. The scenes unfolded like an action movie in my mind. It was also thrilling to read.

Grammar(9/10): There are grammatical errors on the blurb but one that I stumbled upon in the chapters that I read.

Writing Style(10/10): Notably, the author implements imagery very skillfully! The descriptions were mesmerising to read.

Overall Engagement and Enjoyment(10/10): It’s a small town story with a paranormal twist. Very suspenseful with it’s eerie atmosphere. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

Overall score(93 /100)
