Chapter 4

I throw all our stuff into the truck and say goodbye to everyone.

"Hey Matthew, have you seen Grayson?" I ask looking around.

"Oh yeah he left in a hurry last night, he had something to take care of. He said he'd meet us there." I nod "Oh okay, good to know."

I walk over to Percy who's already in the car and take the chance to look at my phone for the first time since we left to see 8 missed calls from my mom. Dread instantly fills me. Panic hits me as I see the missed calls and texts from my mother. Today is the day I die. I think to myself as I text her back explaining what we've been up to these past few days.

Percy's P.O.V

I've been driving for hours, Natalie fell asleep about an hour ago. She looks so peaceful from her usual stressed self. Her hair covers her soft features.

It started raining a few minutes ago and I knew if she was awake she would have had that goofy smile on her face, she loves the rain and storms. She never told me why, her words were "I'll tell you once it's important." Never going to happen, but those were her words.

I guess it hasn't been important enough yet. Last night when she was crying against my chest it was the first time I felt it... the need to be the only one she needs. We've always been there for each other, so it's no surprise to me that I feel like this, but this time... this time it was different.

You don't realise some things until you notice you can't change them or it's too late to do anything about it.

The rain is still crashing down around us. I notice a familiar car passing us, a white range rover. Grayson. Next to me, I see her stretching out of the corner of my eye. A yawn escaped her. "Did you have a nice nap?"

Natalie's P.O.V

I rub my eyes, shifting in my chair to see the rain on the windows. A smile instantly forms. The rain has always made me happy, thunder has always calmed me.

"How far are we?" I turn to face him, his eyes are red and he looks tired in every way. "Four more hours, why?"

"I think you should pull over and let me drive."

"Why?"

"I don't think you're going to make it." He doesn't reply for a while, I keep staring at him till I get a reply. He pulls over and I get into the driver's seat.

A blur of red lights flickers in front of us making me come to a halt. There's a line of cars on either side of the road. I shake Percy's shoulder, waking him from his short-lived nap. "What's going on?"

"I think there was an accident!" I look through the window already unbuckling myself from the seat.

"Nat you're not going out there!" Percy warns. I open my car door, the shock of the cold rain catches me off guard and I do the first thing that comes to mind. I run.

Past every car I run, my breaths get heavy. Till I see it. I see him.

Grayson.

His car door is in the middle of the road, shattered glass everywhere and there he was. Still in the half-deformed car. My heart jumps, and I run as fast as I can towards him. His head dripped with blood.

"Grayson!" I shout. Carefully trying to examine his face without having to touch him, since he must be in pain. "Grayson! Come on, answer me!" his eyes flutter open before falling shut again. People are now getting out of their cars.

"Someone call an ambulance!" I scream looking around trying to find Matthew or anyone at this point. No one. I saw no one.

"Okay, Grayson. I'm going to be right back, I promise."

I run back to the car. I didn't notice how many cars there were at first but as I pass them now I count to keep myself calm. Twenty. Twenty-one. Twenty-two.

Twenty-two cars to get back to the truck. I pull open the door and Percy is still in the same spot. "Call an ambulance!"

"What?" Shock covers his face "I said to call an ambulance, Grayson he's been in an accident."

He still stares at me, before grabbing his phone. "Never mind." I grab my phone out of the centre console. Calling them myself. I get ready to run and go back.

"Natalie, wait!" Percy stops me.

"What happened?"

"A car hit Grayson."

I slam the door shut.

Grayson is just as I left him. His head resting on the seat. The closer I get the more I realise how bad he looks. The side of his head dripped with blood, his wrist purple and probably broken, and his face scrunched up in pain. The car is now nothing but scraps.

No other cars were there, as if he hit a ghost. "Grayson. The ambulance is on the way."

The ambulance arrives on the scene taking him out of the car. I take what I could find. Grabbing his phone and wallet. I walk with them. He's put into the ambulance and I get ready to follow.

"Sorry miss, but we can only let family come with us."

"She's my girlfriend. Please." I look at Grayson's body. Blushing. They look at me sighing. "Okay then."

"Sorry, but which hospital are we going to?"

"Fair point Hospital. It's the closest one." They reply simultaneously.

Sitting in the ambulance. I send a text to Percy telling him where we were headed.

I wait in the emergency room. My leg bounces with every second that passes. Looking up I find Percy walking towards me with a jacket. My hair was still wet from being out in the rain. I take the jacket as he takes a seat next to me.

"So, what happened?"

"He was in a car accident. I don't know what's wrong with him yet."

"Oh..." He shifts from one leg to the next.

"What?" He gives a heavy sigh. "Nothing. I'm going to get coffee. You want one?"

"Sure." He leaves, and I'm alone yet again. The angst getting to me. I chew on my lip.

"Natalie Jones?" The doctor comes forward "He's lucky to be alive. His wrist is badly bruised and he has a concussion. I just want him to stay the night to make sure nothing else might be wrong or if there's any internal bleeding."

Relief fills me with every word he says. "Thank you so much, doctor. Can I go see him?"

"Yes, he's on the second-floor room 5."

Percy walks in with our coffees. "I'm going to check if he's okay. If you need me it's on the second-floor room 5."

Running up the stairs. My heart is beating out of my chest. In the room, I hear the machine beep and see him. The only person in the room. His eyes are focused on the window.

"Hey, Boyfriend," I say slowly. I laugh at my joke. His head turns to face me and he lets out a small chuckle, pain evident on his face. "I have your phone if you want to text Matt about what happened." I grab a chair and pull it towards his bed taking a seat next to him. "Thanks, I'll let him know." He replies by taking the phone.

"Are you feeling okay?"

"I am now." I blush at his remark

"So what happened?" I ask seriously

"I was driving, the rain was pretty bad and the next thing I knew I was hit. I don't even know what hit me."

"There were no other cars there. They just left."

"Why'd you come with me?" His question caught me off guard.

"I know we don't know each other that well, but I'm still worried about you. No one deserves to be alone."

He takes my hand in his. Squeezing it tightly before just holding onto it. "I like holding your hand."

I look down at our hands and then up again at his eyes. "Why?"

"I don't know... it just... feels right." He says, giving me half a smile.

My cheeks burn with his words. I rest my head on the bed still holding his hand as his thumb strokes circles onto my skin.

Percy's P.O.V

It's been hours since she went in to check on him and here I am still sitting with our coffees.

Deciding to go get her I walk up to the room he's in. Her head was laying on the bed. The next thing to catch my eye is their hands. Intertwined. I look up and his eyes are on me.

"You know this wouldn't have happened if you weren't speeding in that rain."

"I know. I'm thankful to be alive. If it weren't for Nat I would still be stuck on that road." He says. The pain was evident in his voice.

"The accident sounded pretty bad. Are you doing okay?" He gives a tight nod. "It hurts like hell, but yeah. If it weren't for Natalie, I would have still been out there."

I sigh "You can count on her for anything. Just don't hurt her or you'll have to deal with me. She deserves everything in this world so make sure you can be that." I say sternly. He looks at me emotionless. I turn. Leaving the room.

"Excuse me. Are you with Grayson Parker?" I stop as the nurse steps in front of me.

"Why do you ask?"

"Well, we're only allowed to release him tomorrow. He's not allowed to drive so I'd just like to know if you're going to be picking him up."

"Yes, of course."
