Overhearing Is No Sin
Louise - Black
"WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME BEFORE?" Fiona practically screams in the middle of our theology class.
I shush her. "Are you crazy?" I ask her, smiling at our old teacher when she looks up and stares at us to see if the tiny noise she heard was product of her imagination. The poor lady has no hearing. She keeps writing in her notebook.
"No, are you crazy?" She points at me. "I am your best friend! I bet Jamie has no idea, either!" She whispers-shouts. "You just told me something you should've tell the same day it happened. You kissed Harry. The very hot, nice, sweet and totally underrated guy."
Okay, maybe I was a bad friend for not telling them.
Fifi has one thin, white eyebrow raised. Her grey, blue-ish eyes are half closed. "Well, in my defense, I was too shocked and had to figure out what I was going to do with my life."
My friend snorts, "excuses," she tells me rolling her eyes. "Are you dating?"
"I don't know if we should date, you know. I'm black and well," Fiona slaps me in the arm. "Ouch!"
"Stop saying that being black makes you ugly, because it does not. Look at me, if you were white they would bully you too." I look down and as Fiona notices this she tries to lighten up the mood with a change of topic. "Anyhow, since I am a good friend I'm going to tell you something I need to say," she says. "It's actually not a secret of mine, but it's basically no secret anymore, so..." she shrugs. "My broth-"
The bell rings and she's interrupted by it. Everyone stands up, and we start walking to the door. Fiona retakes the conversation.
"So, as I was saying, my brother is gay." I don't know how the heck I didn't faint.
"What the fuck!" Fiona looks at me disgusted by the word I said. "I'm sorry, love, but are you talking seriously? It's your brother's secret! You can't say that, he wouldn't like it."
I see how a smile creeps into her face. "He already came out, Lou, he does not care anymore about who gets to know his likings," she takes a deep breath after saying all that in two seconds. "I could scream right now 'my brother George is homosexual' and he would not care," she laughs, "oh no, he would love it, instead," she nods as she says that.
"What did your parents say?" I ask her.
"Well, my dad was a bit alarmed, but mom was extra excited," we are approaching the door and Fiona keeps talking happily, her voice rising. "But the thing is that, I'm actually excited, too, with him being gay and all-"
Once more, her voice is cutted off when Mark -who was with us in our class- walks through the door coughing when Fiona says the word gay.
"Oh my God, he overheard," I realise.
She looks confused. "What?"
"Mark overheard you saying that your brother is gay," I explain.
"So? You don't have a reason to believe that. Maybe he just had to cough."
"No, Fiona, you don't understand. Everyone believes that he is gay, and now that I don't like him the same, same way, I believe that, too." I pause. "Stop looking at me that way. I think Mark likes your brother," I say.
"Oh my," she has her eyes wide open, her hands on top of her mouth. "I would ship them so much!"
