Prologue
It had all gone perfect that day. I got an A+ on my spelling test. I aced my times tables, and I even managed to score an extra brownie at lunch. As a 5th grader, you don't really expect much, so you can get pretty excited over the small things. The announcements came on, and the principal released us from school as usual at 2:20 on the dot. I grabbed my backpack out of my cubby and raced for the buses. I climbed the stairs and made my way to seat A12 were my best friend Rider already sat by the window.
"Hey," he smiled big at me as I plopped down next to him.
"Hey," I returned the smile. I heard him ruffling through his bag as I searched mine. I pulled out the bag of Doritos as he pulled out a bag of gushers. We traded each other and laughed. We always brought the other one something new everyday and traded. I loved getting surprises for him because he knows me so well. I ripped open the bag and popped a blue gusher into my mouth, the juices tingling my tastebuds. I almost choked as the bus came to a screeching halt. Out of curiosity, all the kids stood up. I made my way toward the front as Mr. Danny, our bus driver got off. A woman stood in front of him as he repeatedly asked her to move. He threatened to call the cops and she just snarled. I noticed a bite mark on her arm, and that her skin was really pale. She started limping her way toward Mr. Danny. He backed up and bumped into a trash can falling onto the ground. I heard a few gasps around me as the woman fell on top of Mr. Danny and took a bite out of his darkened, brown skin. A few kids let out yelps. I grabbed Rider's hand and pulled him off the bus. I wanted to check if Mr. Danny was okay, but I was too scared of that 'thing'. Mr. Danny yelled out in pain as the woman continued to bite into his skin. I ran down the block, pulling Rider behind me all the way to our houses. I was out of breath, as was he. He made his way into the house across from mine, searching for his parents. I ran into my house, leaving the door open. I heard cans being tossed around and metal scraping together.
"Mom, Dad," I screamed. I ran into the living room and the tv was turned on.
"People have reported sightings of strange, hysterical people, biting into the flesh of others. The bite seems to have some sort of poison. It slowly kills them. The person bitten then later becomes another one of those biters. We recommend staying inside, away from those creatures, and being safe," the female newscaster said looking at the camera. My mom rushed into the living room and grabbed my shoulders, scaring me. I jumped a little.
"Honey, it's just me, I need you to go pack some clothes. And make sure you wear tennis shoes. Me and daddy are getting food now, okay honey," my mom asked frantically.
"Mom, what's going on," I asked the tears beaming up in my eyes.
"I just need you to do what I asked you Autumn," she said hugging me tightly. "Now go," she said pointing down the hall, patting my back. I raced to my room and slammed open the door. I pulled out all my drawers and grabbed some shorts and jeans and threw them on my bed. I took the locket off my necklace stand and also tossed it over there. I walked over to my closet and got out a few shirts. I also grabbed a small jacket. I grabbed the underwear out of my organizer hanging on the closet door. I threw everything into a suitcase and closed it. I clasped the locket around my neck. I slipped off my flip flops and put on my socks and tennis shoes. I ran down the hallway with my suitcase and a pillow I grabbed off the bed.
"Good girl," my dad told me before throwing the suitcase into the back of our truck. I took the pillow and put it in the middle seat of the three seated truck. I seen my dad coming out with a larger bag, but he gently sat it down in the bed of the truck. My mom rushed out with bags and bags of food. My dad searched the house one last time before shutting the door for good. I sat in the middle seat and my mom and dad climbed in on both sides of me. My dad started the ignition, and drove down the road toward the city. I looked back at Rider's house to see that the SUV was gone, and so was he. My mom wrapped a light blanket around us and hugged my shoulder. Even though I had no idea what was going on, I knew that things were never gonna be the same, and I don't think I've ever been more right in my life.

I have decided to edit this book...majorly. There will be some big changes and somewhat of a different plot but I believe that this book will be much better because I've had about a year more of experience in writing. This book will probably take a lot of time so bear with me, thank you loves.💓
