Chapter 20_ Facebook fetish
"I want my shirt back," Harvey said as soon as I entered the classroom.
"Hi to you to," I said and made my way to my desk.
He followed me and pulled a chair from my neighbouring desk and sat down, facing me.
"So my shirt," he said.
"I'm not giving it back until you return mine," I said.
"You are the one who's going to return mine first, because you took it first," he said.
"Well, I'm not returning first," I said.
"Me neither," he shrugged.
"Me neither," I replied. "Plus, you still haven't told me about the stalker business."
Believe it or not, I was having so much fun at Harvey's house, that I totally forgot the reason why I went there in the first place.
"Are you seriously going to interrogate me?" he asked, rolling his eyes.
"Yes, now spill," I ordered.
"I saw you standing and peeping around a corner. I knew you were up to no good. I stood and waited for you to make a move. I was more than surprised to see you take out an onion and smell it," he shook his head. "But that is the kind of thing I would expect from you."
"Then," I prompted.
"Then you covered your face and turned the corner. When I went after you, I saw that Mr. Collins was leading you to his office. When you went inside, I heard your conversation through the keyhole. And when I heard you get up from the chair, I ran away. I wrote the note and slid it into your locker," he explained.
"What were you even doing near the staff's men's room?" I asked. "Why weren't you in the cafeteria stuffing yourself with food?"
"Nobody knows you better than I do. The minute you created trouble in the class, I was damn sure you were going to do something. I stalked you for the rest of the day," he said smugly.
"No more stalking now. Or I'm gonna teach you a lesson you'll never forget," I threatened.
"What will you do? Cry fake tears and make me feel guilty?" he mocked.
"If it works," I said.
"It won't," he said and went back to his seat, as Miss David entered the classroom.
"Harvey, stand up!" she ordered in the middle of the lecture.
Everyone's heads turned towards Harvey as he stood up, looking confused.
"What historical places are found in Spain?" she asked.
Harvey looked taken aback at such a random question.
"We studied them yesterday," said Miss David. "I don't come here to just speak and leave. What do you remember from the lecture?"
"There was a bridge. Some sort of religious building. And something about a huge palace," he said.
"Is that all you remember? Next time listen to the lectures and prepare them at home, instead of wasting time with certain people," she said.
"But..." he started.
"Sit down and don't answer me back. Didn't your parents teach you any manners?" she said.
Harvey pursed his lips and sat down.
Miss David started her lecture again.
"You know what was that all about?" asked Harvey, outside the classroom.
I shrugged.
"She asked me a question out of the blue. And she expected me to have memorised the whole lecture she gave yesterday," he said, still flustered.
"Welcome to my world," I smirked.
"But it's more fun if she does that to you," he said.
"Guess what! I think it's the other way round," I said and quickened my pace.
"Hey, wait up!" he quickened his pace too.
"What now?" I asked.
"I wanted to know... um... will you..." he trailed off.
"Will I what?" I asked impatiently.
"Will you... I mean... you see its like this. I wanted to..." he trailed off again.
"Yes?" I prompted.
"Never mind," he said.
"What has gotten into you today?" I asked.
"Nothing," he scratched the back of his neck.
"Why are you nervous? What did you do?" I asked.
"I didn't do anything," he said.
"Then why are you nervous?" I asked. "Is this a new prank or something?"
"You wouldn't understand," he said and turned to go.
I didn't stop him.
~~~
"Hey Mary," said Ralph, sitting beside me at the lunch table.
I swallowed the bite of burger in my mouth and replied, "hi."
"I'm Ralph," he said.
"I know," I replied.
"You are Simon's cousin, right?" he asked.
"Yeah," I replied, and took another bite of my burger, feeling self conscious.
He kept rubbing his hands together after every few seconds. I finished off my burger and started on my muffin.
"Are you going to eat your lunch or not?" I asked.
"Your eyes are lovely," he said.
"I... I know. Thanks," I replied, feeling a bit nervous all of a sudden.
"Have you been to the new ice cream parlour?" he asked.
"No," I replied, taking another bite of my muffin.
"We can go together," he said.
"Sure, when?" I asked.
"Tomorrow after school?" he asked.
"Fine with me," I said, acting nonchalant.
"Great," he said and picked up his lunch tray and left.
I let out a sigh of relief. I didn't even know I was holding my breath.
'I would ask him about the tulip tomorrow,' I thought.
~~~
I was standing at the school gates observing Ralph from a few feet away, who stood talking to his friend. He had dark eyes and short dark hair. He had a dimple in his chin. His face was solemn most of the time. He was good looking but I couldn't understand why Lily called him dashing. Then again, beauty is in the eyes.
"Earth to Mary! Who are you staring at this intently?" asked Harvey.
"No one," I replied, annoyed at him for showing up there.
"Apparently one of those two guys is no one," he said, gesturing towards Ralph and his friend.
"It's Ralph," I said.
"What did the poor guy do to you? I'd better warn him to look out for insects in his backpack. Or maybe even poison in his food," he said.
"I'm going to the new ice cream parlour with him tomorrow after school," I said.
"Ice cream then," said Harvey.
I rolled my eyes.
"Wait what!" he exclaimed.
"You heard me," I said.
"He asked you out?" Harvey asked, his eyes widening.
"Why is it so hard to believe?" I asked, annoyed.
"No no, I meant like, he asked you on a date?" he asked again.
Ralph hadn't actually said it was a date, but I nodded my head in the affirmative.
"Have a good time," Harvey said and left abruptly.
"What's up with him today?" I murmured to myself.
~~~
I finished my chores and went up to my room. After a short nap, I started on my history assignment. Writing a 500 word essay on Spanish history was the last thing I would want to do. So I decided to do it first and get it over with.
I was writing about the Great Mosque of Cordóba when I remembered that Harvey didn't remember it's name when Miss David was questioning him.
My lips automatically curved up into a smile as I remembered the flabbergasted look on his face. Mostly teachers liked him and he rarely got insulted.
My smile switched into a frown as I remembered that Miss David had chastised him for wasting his time with a certain someone. Was she taking about me? Because Harvey had spent the whole day with me yesterday. And Jamie too. Maybe she knew that his cousin was staying with him and was referring to him.
On the other hand, she had that sneer on her face which she used only for me. How did she know that Harvey had spent the day with me?
I decided to call Harvey. Maybe he knew something.
"Hello shirt stealer," he picked up on the second ring.
"Hi, Harvey," I said.
"What's the matter?" he became serious at once, hearing the tone of my voice.
"I was thinking, how did Miss David know that we spent yesterday together?" I asked.
"You don't know?" he laughed.
"What?" I asked.
"Do you have a Facebook account?" he asked.
"No, why?" I asked, feeling a little uneasy.
"Sign up and look at Jamie's wall," he said. "He's Jamie Maccas on Facebook."
"Maccas? Isn't that Australian slang for McDonald's, the fast food restaurant?" I asked.
"Yeah, it is. Jamie thought it was cool to replace his surname by Maccas," he said.
"It is cool," I said. "I'll call you back."
"I'll be waiting," he said and hung up.
I could easily imagine him smirking.
I quickly created an account by my real name, Mary Jenkins, and searched for Jamie Maccas.
I scrolled down and saw that Jamie had tagged Harvey McDonald, and there were more than 150 likes on every picture he had uploaded last night.
The pictures of our food fight!
I scrolled down and looked at all the pictures, smiling broadly. There were hundreds of comments of people I didn't know. Jamie sure was popular in his school.
There were other pictures too, which didn't interest me. I scrolled back up and looked at the picture with the most likes. It was my ugliest looking picture ever. Jamie had egged me from behind and I had felt the egg seep through my hair. I had the most horrifying look on my face.
The first thought that crossed my mind was, 'I'm gonna kill Jamie the next time I see him.'
I looked at the comments. My face grew hot as I read how embarrassing they were. But I still couldn't stop smiling.
The highest amount of comments were on picture in which we were sitting on the floor laughing, and Jamie was clutching at my foot.
Pixie girl:
Aaw! You two are such a cute couple, Jamie.
Jamie Maccas:
Thanks :D
Harvey McDonald:
They aren't a couple XD
Jamie Maccas:
Yet... ;)
I replied to his comment:
Mary Jenkins:
You wish! :/
There were other comments too, like how me and Harvey or me and Jamie would look so cute together. I mentally gagged at the thought. Couldn't people keep their noses out of other people's personal lives?
I commented on the picture in which I was covering Jamie with whipped cream.
He had written, this was cheating. She pranked me.
King Bruce:
I want to meet the girl who managed to prank you.
Jamie Maccas:
It was a one time thing.
Mary Jenkins:
You can never win from the prankster *smug face*
I liked all the pictures except the one in which I was being egged. I sent a friend request to Jamie and to Harvey too.
My phone rang and I picked it up, "hello!"
"I see you have seen the pictures," said Harvey.
"Does Miss David stalk Jamie?" I asked.
"Nope, she stalks me," he replied.
"Why don't you block her?" I asked, disgusted.
I mean what kind of teacher stalks people?
"The thing is, she has a fake ID and I don't know who she is," replied Harvey.
"How do you know that she stalks you then?" I asked, confused.
"I don't. I just thought of it," he laughed.
"Idiot," I said. "Maybe someone told her."
"I think Hilda might have told her," he said. "Because she is in my friend list and must have seen the pictures."
"That's possible," I said, nodding my head.
"Gotta go. See ya," he said and hung up with out waiting for my response.
I made a face at the phone and opened Facebook again. I saw I had received three notifications. Two of Jamie and Harvey accepting my friend request, and one of a reply to my comment.
I opened it and saw that Jamie had replied to my earlier comment on the picture in which I was covering him in whipped cream.
Jamie Maccas:
Is that a challenge?
I replied,
Mary Jenkins:
Yeah!
Jamie Maccas:
Oh you're on!
I don't know why, but my sixth sense told me to keep my eyes and ears wide open.
